Lemmy wrote"1916" after seeing a TV documentary on the Battle of the Somme. He wrote about it in his book 'White Line Fever' saying he based the song on the interview with a veteran of the battle who broke down remembering holding his best friend as he died. Props to Sabaton for including the surviving members of Motorhead in the video. A fabulous tribute to Lemmy and all the soldiers throughout history who marched off to defend, and sometimes die, for their homeland. Great reaction, keep rocking.

I first heard 1916 by Motörhead a few weeks before this release on a German rock radio and I was impressed. Never thought Motörhead wrote such a great song back in 1991.
And now Sabaton delivered this absolutely masterpiece as a trubite to Lemmy and Motörhead and to all soldiers of different ages.
Heard this song more than 30 times now and it hits every time. The brilliant way of telling stories about what happened in the past and teaching history makes them my favourite band for years. No wonder that I have a lot of Sabaton patches and soon Motörhead patches on my battle vest. Sabaton made a powerful tribute to Motörhead and their great song 1916.
They did more than just a tribute to Motörhead but a tribute to all fallen soldiers in history.
All the different soldiers from different ages refer to specific Sabaton songs. The Lady coming out of the dark alley is one of the Night Witches. The convertible car refers to the car where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was shot in Sarajevo which caused WWI. And at the end of the song was "The Old Pub" the B17 bomber from the song No bullets fly... >> Did you know that Sabaton received the "Enlightener of the Year Award 2022"? Sabaton is the "FIRST EVER ROCK BAND to receive this prestigious accolade!!"

Sabaton can make war look like an amazing thing, all the while reminding us that it is NOT an amazing thing, it is a senseless loss of life. By not making nations the subjects of the songs, but individuals, squads, platoons, any group of people that did incredible things in a war, they write to dedicate their deeds in our hearts, in our minds, in our history. They say History is written by the victor, and that may be true in many senses, but that doesn't make the losing side bad guys, nor nullify any amazing deeds that soldiers did, even if it was in vain at the end. Salute, Sabaton.
As for the next Sabaton song, I think you'd really Like "Lady of the Dark". It has a cool animated video which is similar to No Bullets Fly, done by the same people too.

A great Lemmy song and even better Sabaton cover. This is salute to all the "food for the guns" people who served down through the ages. Different cultures, different wars, different eras, yet each of us share the same feelings and experiences from these conflicts. These young gave up everything for what believe and in hopes of it being the War th end all Wars, sadly that never came to reality as we never seem to learn from history or our past. A shout out to all those that survived the war that scared them for the rest of their days.

Back then, People didn't really know how bad war was going to be.. Machine guns, planes, tanks and gas were all brand new.. many Brits and Germans expected an adventurous journey, Fighting town by town like they used to. Not running out of Trenches and being slaughtered by machines.. Or being shelled and gassed out of their only cover.. And those men today in Ukraine are just as scared as anyone would be.. But its their will to fight that brings them so much strength, their want to protect whats theirs.. Some men, Like off the top of my head Adolf Hitler, described fighting in WW1 to be one of the best times of his life.. Some people just crave to fight in war.
I'm fourteen.. I don't know a lot but I am one of the people who find putting my life at risk for others to be most appealing I'm not saying I wouldn't be scared but imagining being a soldier is something I have always done and I have always wanted to do.

Then we add in the open top car as a nod to the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, which was the catalyst for the start of the Great War.

Hey, do not be ashamed of your fear. It makes you human and that's important. And do not think you wouldn't be able to rise to the call if it came, you would find the courage to do so in the right circumstances. Imagine yourself in the shoes of those young soldiers, your country is at war, they target your home, your family and that same family need you to protect them. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't think about it too much, you would pick up a gun and you would go to war just to protect your son. You would be afraid doing it, but you would be even more afraid to lose your family. That's what pushed a lot of those soldiers to pick up arms and fight.
Also, keep something in mind, a soldier without fear is no soldier at all, it is a dead man walking looking for his grave. Fear help you stay safe, it help you stay concious of your suroundings, it keep you human. So, once again, do not be ashamed of your fear, it is a deep and highly important human emotion.

The creepiest thing in this is the white coupé in the street... This is the car Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife Sophie bled to death in the summer of 1914 in Sarajevo, harbinger for a period of hitherto unseen bloodshed, untold millions dead or maimed in the 30 years thereafter, it's a seemingly banal thing, this single white coupé, but it's war and conquest and death and hunger in it's wake.
    Best regards

Freedom is not a lifetime guarantee!! Some still don’t have it. Those of us who do owe a huge debt to those before us that made sacrifices in blood for people they didn’t even know. 14/15 yo kids lied about their age and VOLUNTEERED to go fight. Look at someone that age and just imagine that. Think of Ukraine, and remember that there are large powers in this world that could turn their attention to any of our countries tomorrow, and it would be our families/friends in the pages of history. This song is a great reminder to not be complacent about your freedom. The way my government treats our veterans is disgusting and they should be ashamed, but they aren’t. How they still continue to get people to sign up, when they know they’ll be treated like shit when they get home, is beyond me. I’m just so grateful for every one of them. Try to volunteer or donate to the veterans where you are so they know they are not forgotten by us, the citizens. 😢 love to those serving and those that have ❤🇱🇷

About the "how" part: There was enormous peer pressure to volunteer because all your friends did, but not just that. They also recruited women of the same age to hand down symbols of cowardice if they met a guy of an enlistment age walking down the street. And having women of your age publicly shame you is a powerful tool when trying to break young men.
The said young women were of course then later rewarded by having all men of their town wiped out.

Both very somber songs telling the stories about two battles which resulted in horrendous amounts of casualties, and wasted the lives of young men for no real gain. They're a bit old but quite good, the first two are just some rock songs but metal crue is like a tribute to the genre naming lots of different bands through the whole song and metal trilogy is just all of them thogeter is a single song, totally recommended.

Actually Metal Ripper uses lyrics from old metal/rock bands. And metal machine uses song titles as their lyrics.

I think you'd be surprised what you'd do when you're in that situation. Only reason you're saying "no" now is because you're not in that situation, but if the enemy invades your country and you know that if you don't go, if they succeed in the invasion, the enemy will kill your family - you'd most likely go. I think most would, when it comes right down to it. Of course some will cower and hide, but I think majority will protect those they love :)

1 million dead for 6 miles (10 km) of pointless ground that in the end meant nothing.
In Australia we just had ANZAC day (Our version of remembrance day), this hits harder after remembering the pointless battle at Gallipoli from that same era.
The entire 1st World War was one giant waste of life with no real resolution, when will we learn?

There are several memorials to Aussie soldiers who fought at the Somme. The cemetery I saw was incredibly beautiful. Each grave had its own rose bush, along with extra flowers growing. The museum is really good. I didn't know that Aussies fought there, and the story of them firing salutes at the funeral of their foe, the Red Baron, was incredible. "The Australian National Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux is the main memorial to Australian military personnel killed on the Western Front during World War I. It is located on the Route Villiers-Bretonneux (D 23), between the towns of Fouilloy and Villers-Bretonneux, in the Somme département, France."

Pals battalions they were called. You join up with people from your community. Of course, when your towns battalion goes over the top, half of it or more might get shot dead. By the end of the war, some towns and cities had lost a large number of its young male population.

How? Well, it's quite difficult to imagine for us having lived in peacetime all of our life, where war has been a thing of the past and something you never would experience yourself. And it is even more difficult to imagine when this "truth" goes for the whole society/country that you live in.
But we humans are quite good at adapting, even though we don't really think so. If war were to come knocking at your doorstep you'd most likely want to fight for that country/society, and not to mention your family and children.
