  • Here are two ways to remove or blur your background in Camtasia. Blurring with AI will also work like background blur in Zoom.
First, I explain how to use the traditional chroma key or remove color effect by modifying parameters like tolerance and softness. I also discuss the importance of screen lighting and choosing the right color.
Second, I introduce a new, AI-driven effect released in Camtasia 2023 that identifies the human shape and removes the background around it. I discuss limitations of the new effect such as inability to remove backgrounds behind objects like headphones and microphones, and tricks to perfect it by combining it with the remove color effect.
Lastly, I show how to blur your background similar to the Zoom background blur, by manipulating opacity and stacking effects.

I love the way you encourage experimentation with effects. I would not have thought of combining the effects, and the existence of the blur function had passed me by.

Thank you! Some effects to lend themselves to being combined.

Great tips Cristi! I am using an obsbot meet webcam that gives us a rather uniform green screen (built-in AI feature). Testing it in combination with what you shared. Hope you can also research into this and advise if the sequence of using these 2 methods affect the end output. I am using Camtasia Studio 2023. New to your channel but loving your content.

Thank you and welcome to my channel!
I have not personally used the webcam you describe, but if it has an AI built-in feature to remove or blur your background, that sounds interesting. The only problem I see with the AI background blurring (Zoom also) is that the edges are not so crisp. They can be blurry or miss some areas, depending on how you move during the recording. Applying the Camtasia filters after that might be hit and miss if the edges around the person are not sharp enough. It could leave you with a sort of 'halo' effect, if you know what I mean. That can be hard to remove. The best solution is always to have your own green screen behind you.

Hi Cristi! :D I have a question. Since Camtasia and most editors can't handle MKV files, what would you do with them? I converted them using VLC, but sometimes the video and audio is out of sync and it is hard to sync them manually, especially if you want to be precise. I tried to read about it and some forum post recommended not converting but remuxing them and to use Avidemux or FFmpeg. My problem is that Avidemux doesn't install on my Win 11 (as I read it is a common bug) and I haven't tried FFmpeg et, but it seems to operate with codes which I'm a bit afraid of. Anyways I thought you might know something simpler for the problem :) :D

Hi, I can help with this:
You have to remember that MKV is merely a 'container', not a video format in itself. Inside a MKV file you can have multiple video, audio, subtitles streams that are all separate.
I'm assuming the files you're talking about are coming from OBS, which records in MKV, but inside those MKVs are in fact video and audio tracks.
The easiest way to extract them from there (without re-encoding or 'muxing' the files), is to use Losslesscut (free tool, works on Mac and Windows). Just install it (it will also come with ffmpeg, but you don't have to use command-line 'code' with it).
Then drop your file in Losslesscut, and go to the top-left where the tracks are. It will show you what files are inside that MKV. Simply go to the right side and choose 'Extract track as separate file'. Losslesscut will just save that file separately. I think you will have a video and an audio file now -- add both to Camtasia, in sync, and you're off!
Hope this helps. Good idea for a video.

@@Graphicious I tried it and with one video it worked well getting the video and audio files, but I encountered another problem.
So video ‘A’ had AAC as an audio file. Camtasia couldn’t handle it, but Premiere Pro could (so it was usable for me, but maybe not for your other viewers). But when I tried video ‘B’ it had an audio file as ‘eac3’ and video ‘C’ had ‘dts’. And I tried to look up free converters, but I couldn’t find any (I found one for free if the file is less than 5 minutes, but these are real movies and TV shows I’m talking about so they are long).
I want to make acting showreels for actors and they send me their movies and TV shows in MKV or make videos for CZcams Channels from movies. Do you have any idea what to do with these weird audio files, so I can put them into Camtasia or Premiere Pro? If there isn't any free converter option then is there any paid option which is cheap and can handle EVERY audio type?
      Thanks again! :) :D

@hungarianlanguageculture1640 Try Handbrake - it is free and it is very well known for converting between formats
