Oversimplified has finally released what we have all been waiting for! He has finally released a video on Napoleon and the Napoleonic Wars. The time period in the late 18th and early 19th century that shaped Europe and created one of the most popular men in history.
Possibly one of the best generals and conquerors in human history as well.
This is a time period Tommy knows nothing about because he hasn't played EU4, March of the Eagles or Victoria 2, so his knowledge is very basic besides watching those Napoleon videos a while back.
Napoleon is many peoples favorite historical figure and how he was able to conquer all of Europe in such a short time period and reach the point where countries are literally declaring war on him as a person is insane.
This is Oversimplified's video on the Napolenic Wars and Tommy's reaction on it. You get to see the German education system at work here!

Not sure why you decided to go full capitalist bootlicker when that wasn't the topic. It is especially funny that you yourself did subconsciously make the connection between colonization and capitalist exploitation without me even bringing it up while in your next breath you defend it.
I bet you're gonna make the case that sweatshops are good and that they help poor people and the economy of the global south. This would ignore the fact that Western powers have a history (recent ones at that) of supporting and staging coups in any country that tries to nationalize their natural resources as well as showing a lack of awareness on how we impose extremely unfair trade deals on countries that stand little to no chance of resisting our influence and power.
As for direct aid i suggest you look up how they too often are used as weapons to disrupt economies. One example being how Somalian food aid managed to harm farmers and local production. Obviously its more complicated than that but then again its up to you to look it up. Links have a tendency to get comments deleted or shadowbanned so i'll leave you to it.
Anyway I digress. Feel free to not respond, I have no interest in prolonged YT arguments where one gets called a loser for leaving the conversation out of sheer frustration/exhaustion.

Napoleon is my “favorite“ historical figure because even though he did many things wrong and fucked up many things it is still fascinating to watch a random Corsican dude beating the shit out some of the most powerful nations in the world multiple times

The reason the allies didn't execute Napoleon was that that would set a precedent that if you defeated a country in war you could execute their monarch which would obviously make a lot of monarchs and nobles very anxious. Back in those days royals rarely faced personal consequences to war they might lose territory, wealth or simple prestige but it would never be their wealth it would never be their own lands that were lost it would just be the dirty peasants who would foot the bill. Monarchs would usually be captured and ransomed back for a lot of money.
This ^ if you are a Monarch, executing defeated Monarchs sets a bad presentient for yourself lol
He also was heavily respected among his subjects and a lot of them would basically probably make him a martyr

Napoleon knew about the fog covering his center at Austerlitz because he had personally reconnoitered the battle field in the previous days. He had seen that early in the morning, the fog lay low in the valley of the stream, and it burned off by about 10-11am. He even predicted the exact course of the battle to his own generals the night before.

You forgot to mention their involvement in the Peninsular War.
Look up the battle of Somosierra - a Polish cavalry charge smashed through several lines of prepared Spanish defences in a narrow mountain passage.
It's pretty crazy how European nations just fought all over the place in these times.
I agree, I think it would have been also interesting if he mentioned how in Haiti the Slaves revolted against the French, and how the Polish garrisons statuoned there changes sides and joined the slaves revolt

14:35 Tommy, you are exactly right. Napoleonic tactics are essentially Beta-Blitzkrieg.
Blitzkrieg relied a lot on vernichtungkrieg and could not hold many fronts simultaneously or even colossal battlefield. In contrast, napoleons tactic could hold many fronts and didn’t rely on destroying the enemy entirely.
Although, yes, they are both quick. But Napoleon only attacks land while Blietzkrig attacks from land and sky. Although, Blietzkrig was invented by a Frenchman, Charles de Gaulle, in the book « La France et son armée, » which proposed this tactic for France. Germany eventually used it against France...

Not really, he used poland more than he helped it. Using polish soldiers at samosierra, in Haïti, in italy, making the duchy of warsaw a logistical platform for his russian campaign and taking every ressources from it, taking nearly 100 000 men for his "Grande armée" in russia and all that for a wife and nothing more than a small duchy.
And to had insult to the injury, in France there is a saying "boire comme un polonais" which means "drink like a pole", he said it because during the russian campaign after a night of drinking like every other soldiers, polish soldiers could go march like they did not drink and other were hungover. And now in France it just means you are an alcoholic

Tommy doesn't really watch these videos, he sorta just glances at the screen now and again and talks about the first thing he see's then goes back to watching his chat.
To be honest, there were so many people harassing him over and over again in every stream about it that he didn't really enjoy it. He only asked about facts like once or twice in chat and didn't bother reading it because of the spam
It seems he has very low attention time, he should just not read the chat and only answer the donations.
I cant understand how anybody could watch that or be a streamer and react. You cant concentrate on the video because they go either mental in the chat or tommy is talking constantly or a new subscription or donating is arriving. It drives me nuts. His videos are pretty nice but his reactions drive me crazy

Napoleon and his generals visited the tomb of Frederick the great in Berlin after their victory against Prussia and when they did Napoleon said: "Hats off gentlemen. If this man were alive today we would not be standing here". Shows how much respect Napoleon had for Frederick the great.
I read that when he confronted the soldiers he said “if anyone wants to stop me, shoot now” or something to that effect.

I very much know the feeling of being overwhelmed and simply impressed imagining how past battles went down. This exact feeling is why I started to study History in Aachen a couple of years ago.
They didn't execute Napoleon because all of them were huge Napoleon fans, he fought all of Europe and won multiple times, even if he was the enemy they had huge respect for how amazing he was on the battlefield. I remember hearing a story somewhere about how when he was exiled in Elba, they had a British ship patrolling around the island to ensure he didn't leave, and the captain was a fan of Napoleon and became friends with him, which helped Napoleon eventually fool him and escape under his watchful eye. You see a similar level of respect in WW2 between British and American generals and their German counterparts, especially with Rommel, one of the American generals was actually quoted as being sad that they missed their chance to fight the legendary Rommel in North Africa when Rommel pulled out.

The best part of Horatio Nelson is that he lost one of his arm in another conflict AND he was seasick. I'm not kidding. This dude was soo seasick that he had to sleep almost on every journey so he doesn't feel sick and throw up.

Tommy should watch Epic History TV, they did a whole series on the Napoleonic wars that goes into a lot more depth, and is a lot more dramatic and epic, its also long but you just do one video at the start of the stream and its all g. The series is a 10/10 some of the best content on YT he needs to see it.
Also Oversimplified pretty blatantly coped Epic History TV's videos. Some lines and phrasing are nearly identical.
I feel like Tommy has reacted to Napoleonic wars like 3 times. I remember him telling us about the re-enactment of the Battle of Leipzig. Still a good story though.

They actually annexed a lot from France (the early conquests of the Republic), some earlier peace treaty proposed to Napoleon would have actually let him keep more territories. But he chose to keep fighting, and got the worst deal.
I don't think the allies could really take more from France. France also had to give a lot of money.

i actually like that napoleon quote at the end as it means taht to be forgotten is not existing at all. Even those that are successful but being lowkey, at some point and some way, they have impacted a life of another thus still being remembered but to not be remembered by any at all means that your existence is null. Which is deep and insightful.

I hate how the treaty at the end of the napoleonic war was so fair but the treaty of versailles was so harsh and still people dont compare the two but still say its not harsh
It is a common misconception, the Versailles treaty was not harsh at all toward Germany. In fact, it gave Germany time to pay back the debt of war, kept its unity, its industry, was neither invaded nor occupied, and was spared the symbolic submission with a capture of Berlin. Germany got treated way more harsher after WW2.

what napoleon did wasnt really blitzkrieg in the sense of infantry tactics of driving wedges between enemy lines and preparing encirclements, it was similar tho in his innovative artilery usage, basically have your guns really close to the enemy and blast them at point blank range (at the time artilery was usually held far away from the battlefield so they dont get captured cos they were ridiculously expensive)

The crown thing reminds me of Julius Caesar who “refused” to wear the crown when MA offered to put it on his head to show that he wasn’t an “emperor” (although he sort of was lol)
visited the hms victory in portsmouth (including the admiral's uniform of nelson, bloody in which he died) and it was remarkable, though you could only visit certain parts and the roof of the decks was like 1,60m above the floor, but maybe the sailors back then were a lot smaller

I was writing a novella about a soldier in WW2, it's a fascinating bit of history to read through
just imagine the high and adrenaline rush of being a general in that era and coordinating a victory. i believe thats what hes talking about at 8:23
