I feel like Vader telling Obi-Wan he killed Anakin helped the whole 'certain point of view' thing stand up a bit better. Obi-wan didn't just make up that Vader killed Anakin, Vader literally told him that.

The one criticism I agree with the most is how the other inquisitors were just dropped from the storyline for the last two episodes. It did feel weird that they just disappeared from the story

@@marshamoseley5878 Oh I don't think they need to play a major role in the last two episodes. But still seemed weird with a big confrontation with a powerful Jedi & with the discovery of The Path they were no where to been seen. Seems like it would of been a case of all hands on deck to go after the Path and Kenobi. I still loved the series but that one part just seemed a little weird that the characters vanished from the storyline without explanation

Yes, but I guess it is more between Vader and Obi-wan. The Inquisitors have their spotlight in Rebels. Just like Luke has his in the original trilogy. Still it would have been awesome to see them kicking some ass in live action.

    @myriadmediamusings Před rokem +62

When all's said and done, I really enjoyed this one and that's not just because Obi-Wan Kenobi is my favorite Star Wars character of all time. I felt the themes, story ideas and character moments were great, and for the most it is a great bridge between the PT and OT. Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen reprised their roles effortlessly, and Viven Lyra Blair was absolutely wonderful as young Leia and I hope she has a prosperous career ahead of her. Throughout the whole show I completely bought that she would grow up into young Carrie Fisher and makes me so bummed that Carrie is gone; she woulda loved Blair and coulda been a cool granny mentor to her.
I suppose my only nitpick is how the presentation seems just a bit...off. Not that it's bad, but moreso than Mando and Book you can really feel that this was made for a small screen. It's rather ironic that Mando and Book, small-scale stories, appear to be shot and presented on a grander scale while the show about one of the most famous OG Star Wars characters feels the most reserved and tight. Again, not bad, just really noticeable. Reva's story kinda lost me by the end and I'm a bit wary of her surviving, but we'll see if they do anything with her down the line.
I'd say that this is the 2nd strongest D+ live action show debut season, under Mando but above Book. My ranking of the episodes would be 3>6>5>1>2>4. Not sure if I'd want a season 2 given how this one ended, but we'll see. Overall this was a great show and I feel is the easiest to get into for casual viewers who've only seen the movies. The best way I feel for a rewatch is to split the 6 episodes into 3 blocks of 2 each to view them like movies.

Well said Alex. I had my quibbles with how some of the story went on -- the coincidence that the random farmer Reva threatens in Episode I is in fact the uncle looking after Anakin's son, and that she is able to put this all together via broken message from Bail Organa that should never have been sent to begin with, is a bit much for me -- but all in all I am pretty satisfied with this series. I really thought every cast member brought it.

She probably never did figure out just who the boy was, just that he was important to Obi-Wan. She also had to ask the local populace to find out just who "Owen" was and where he lived. The only stretch is that she just happened to start looking in the right area of Tatooine despite having no previous knowledge of where on the entire planet Obi-Wan and Owen lived.

Great review. Very even-handed and fair. I don't include SW Explained in this category, but after Part 3, I had to stop watching all of the CZcams film pundits that became a part of my daily viewing habits since the shutdown. I watched people whose opinions I respect a great deal start off with the basic premise of liking an episode, just to end up talking themselves into NOT liking that same episode after a two hour recap show. It's like paralysis by analysis. In fairness to them, I've watched them do the same thing with the Marvel D+ shows, and I was fine with it. But, my emotional connection with this project was so deep, I just had to tune out the noise and judge it based on my own reactions. All of that said, I watched and enjoyed your coverage of the show, and I can't wait for 'Andor' Hope that AC gets fixed!

And if they want an antagonist for him to fight on Tatooinee, they could always just recanonize that Tusken Raider Jedi and the entirety of his legends story, (A'Sharad Hett was his name,) he survived Order 66 and went back to the tribe that raised him on Tatooinee. He eventually started causing trouble by helping his tribe take back lands by force, and endangering Tatooinee's inhabitants, so that was when Obi-Wan came out and confronted him.
The two would duel, and Obi-Wan would end up defeating him, and slicing off his arm; and then the Tuskens would then proceed to ban him for failing to defeat Kenobi. This is the same Jedi that goes on to become the Sith Lord known as Darth Krayt some decades after the original trilogy.
So they could easily do this, and while at the same time, setting up A'Sharad Hett as Darth Krayt in a post sequel trilogy era.

The story and the thematic concepts just worked for me on pretty much every level. I really and truly don’t think this “broke canon” as much as I’m seeing people say it did. For every question the show put out, I feel like they either provided a direct answer (i.e. everything with the Grand Inquisitor), or a moment in which we could do some guessing and arrive at a logical conclusion. As great an opportunity and cost saving measure as the Volume and StageCraft is, I really do have issues with the creative limitations of the process.
As you mention, it’s looking like the number of characters that can safely fit in the Volume is limited, so crowd scenes or full military scenes feel small and at times underwhelming. But, there are also visual things, lighting - and specifically shadows and contrast - really removes dimension and makes scenes sometimes look a little flat. Even action scenes feel paired back. We’ll see what we get with Andor, but I’m hoping that the Volume eventually becomes a tool rather than seemingly the whole stage. But, budget I guess will dictate that.

I really enjoyed the show. It’s probably my favourite of the three live actions we’ve gotten thus far. Additionally, I enjoyed that the show was a bit more even handed with the cameos and Easter eggs. At times with Mando and especially with Boba it felt like they were making a concerted effort to have everything on screen be some sort of call back to something else, and it just got to be a lot. Obi Wan however was a lot more conservative, and at no point was I left scratching my head and thinking “was this character showing up really necessary?”

I think I mostly agree with your criticisms of The Volume and the music. But on my second watches, those concerns evaporated and I was just enjoying the ride. If it was poorly written or Ewan, the other actors, or Deborah Chow phoned it in to pick up a paycheck, then yes; this would have been a let down. But it was so well done despite its budgetary limitations that I am A-OK with what was presented.
I am now even more interested in reading Master and Commander after the final scene of the show and I immediately hopped on Amazon and pre-ordered the Ben on Eopie Funko Pop which releases just after my birthday.
So yes, I’d say this show was awesome and worth the wait. I laughed, I wondered, I got suspicious, and even got emotional, so this holds a special place in my youthful heart as Obi-Wan was my favorite character in the prequel trilogy. I suppose it was the Boy Scout in me or that I have red hair, but I was so looking forward to this show and it paid off!

It probably should have remained a movie, and I'm sure that there's a 2.5 hour fan edit in the works by someone out there with the technical knowhow to do it, but for what it is, I'm content with what we were given. I'd love to see what someone comes up with in a movie length edit though because this could be something that when trimmed down could be really really good, and then that makes the show an optional Extended Edition for anyone with more time on their hands.

This series I thought was very well done and the thing that we need to be mindful of when it comes to the execution of the show this was shot during pandemic times so how are you supposed to crowd a whole bunch of storm troopers in the one room when the pandemic was at its height when this was being shot. I really had a fun time with the story. And I really don’t want there to be a season two. However I would like to know what happens to Reva after all this? Does she get rec-captured by the empire and then arrested? Does she go into hiding? Or does she get brave and join the beginning of the rebellion? I kinda wanna know that. My only criticism for the series was that the grand inquisitor should’ve stayed dead because I feel like Star Wars has been leaning too much on oh they are not dead lately. I feel like you can only use that idea so many times before it gets stale which it already has for me.

    • @snemmy

Grand Inquisitor couldn't stay dead as he dies in Rebels, which is another 4-5 years later. I would like to have seen a scene where GI is found/taken by the other Inquisitors (painfully) given cybernetics as they did with Fennec Shand in Book of Boba. That said, yeah, SW leans far too heavily on their established tropes. LIke yeah, we get the cyclical storytelling stuff, but sometimes I think writers tend to forget every other writer is also using those same tropes and cyclical writings, so we just spin in so many circles.

It was clear that it wasn't going to be the story I wanted after episode one. Setting those expectations aside, and taking the series as the thing that it is, I liked it over all. I think each episode was better than the one before it. The writing on a macro scale was good, but I think the more I pick it apart the less praise I have. Especially when it comes to Lisa's dialogue, I just have a hard time believing that a child would act or speak that way, regardless of their history. But if the biggest issue I have with a series I've wanted this much for this long is some choppy dialogue in a Star Wars show (gasp) I think that's pretty good.

I think that's the star wars fandoms undoing. By picking it apart, we ruin it for ourselves, to the point where even the smallest breach of Canon or odd choice somehow become a huge deal. I just got recommended an article that claimed Obi-Wan Kenobi has killed the star wars franchise and it just made me so frustrated. Thank you for making these videos you never fail to restore my faith in star wars fans.
Personally I wasn't excited for Obi-Wan Kenobi. Partially because of it being a bridging story. Partially because of the comics with his journals and my fears the show would retcon things (but it makes perfect sense he wouldn't write about Leia or Reva in his journal because of the danger they were both in). Partially because I didn't grow up on the prequels so I didn't have the same nostalgia or expectations as a lot of people did (ahsoka is where all my hopes like that lie since I grew up with clone wars and rebels and the canon thrawn trilogy). And I think the fact that I wasn't excited made me love this show.
I feel like a lot of people were blinded by their expectations and became so fixed on what they wanted that they couldn't just sit back and enjoy the ride. The show surprised me in ways I didn't expect it to, and did an amazing job with character development. My favourite part was definitely Reva's journey and my favourite moment was her bringing Luke back and crying. (Maybe partially because the thing I was most excited about in this series was the inquisitorius).
I feel like it's so easy to let the haters sour our enjoyment of things. Watching these videos reminds me of what I loved in it. I think Obi-wan Kenobi was pretty much the best show it could've been. And I still think we need to be leaving the Skywalker saga behind for the moment (possibly forever), but I'm glad Obi-Wan Kenobi happened, and I hope they utilise Reva well in future (maybe in jedi Survivor as an ally to cal I would be so happy).

Did I have issues with it? Absolutely, though they were mostly very minor. But they would never take away from the absolute blast I had with this "movie". Kenobi's story in this series, his r/s with Leia, the use of Vader/Anakin, Reva's arc, side characters like Haja, Tala and her droid were all done very well.

For the most part, I like your analysis on this series. However I think your criticism of such a small Attack Force, take a look at it again look at the landscape they didn't really have a lot of real estate to stuff Scott Walkers or AT-AT's ... being 5 years old at the time of release of episode 4, the Star Wars saga has always been in my life. I've paid attention quite closely, catching some of the Side Stories not really interested in the animates,, for those of us who didn't see Rebels, found it to be very cool and surprising that Vader and Kenobi face off again you could say Vader Kenobi Park Ii,, considering their first encounter in the series was interrupted I love both of their battles as one,, I loved how they were using the Rocks against each other especially when Kenobi used him against Vader I thought was absolutely outstanding it made me actually laugh out loud because of how cool it was and how well done that whole scene was. Taking half of his mask off was pretty awesome. I believe it to be nitpicking a bit and if we're going to nitpick we could also talk about the recorded message and episode 4 from R2D2 to Ben Kenobi when Princess Leia States General Kenobi you served with my father in The Clone Wars like she had no memory of this situation and obviously as Star Wars fans we can let that little detail slide,,, I think Owen McGregor delivered a five-star performance and I honestly give this series of five star rating as 100% outstanding yeah one might talk about little idiosyncrasies but even in the major Motion Pictures in the early days there were a few that we overlooked,, I must say this rates number one in the series from Kenobi#2 Boba Fett#3 the Mandalorian, even though the Mandalorian got the ball rolling and was very good I honestly must say this miniseries was just Superior to both of them extremely well done.. from when this all started being a 5-year-old now being a 50-year-old we should all be thankful and very happy that this story lives on and is even gotten to be bigger and better as the years have gone by,, one thing I may disagree upon is I don't think it is possible for an overuse of Darth Vader I think if you took a poll and asked our fellow fans I think a lot of us wouldn't mind seeing even more and more of him.. maybe I feel this way because I am a first generation fan,, yeah the other Sith characters were just okay however there is no character like Darth Vader,, I would perhaps like to see a series centered around him so those of us that would like to see more of him get a very strong dosage LOL,, but yes all of the memory tie-ins and everything that you did mention this is why it adds up to still being a five-star series and again Ewan McGregor was simply fantastic he is done such a awesome job as replacing and owning the early years of our interpretation of what Obi-Wan Kenobi is so this is why I say a five-star performance on his part and again a five-star reading for the series. May the force be with you all,,, always

There's no excuse for the lack of established musical themes. For a simple reason, we had them all in the Prequels. The Force theme, Imperial march, Leia's theme and many others. If they were present in the Prequels, there's no reason for them not to be present in this series. Seems to me that the composer for this had ego issues and thought that her music will be original enough to replace Williams. She was wrong. For f***c sake, we have Leia's theme from the moment she was born and delivered to Alderaan. Why not have it since the first episode of this series...

I think my main problem was that Reva's character was randomly linked so closely to all of these legacy characters, it was little too close for my liking; (Vader, Obi-Wan, Luke, Leia, Owen, Beru, and so on,) that connection just felt very out of place and forced.
I mean, she now conveniently knows about all these secrets surrounding the legacy characters (Vader's true identity, and Obi-Wan's & Luke's presence on Tatooinee,) and then they proceeded to keep her alive... that's very risky to the lore, and Reva's probably gonna have some serious plot armor so as to not divulge such sensitive information, which means there won't hardly be any stakes with the character.
With that said, they should've just killed her off at the end, there's no point in keeping side characters alive just to make more pointless spin-off shows.

    • @4ndroidG

In the final fight after Vader gets his faceplate cut off, when he says "I am not your failure Obi Wan..." this is actually what's left of Anakin talking, basically telling Kenobi that what's happening isn't his fault but Anakin's. To conclude with a positive note, Ewan did an outstanding job and it was a joy watching him act the hell out of that character. Also little Leia kind of worked pretty good, the actress did very well and I hope we see more of her and the character.

Mandalorian was a backdoor pilot for it's entire second season. I would much rather watch something this flawed, than something with the veneer of looking good and end up just being a trailer for sequels and spinoffs

I’ve seen the term “The Volume” a few times now, but it’s never been explained, and the people using it assume the viewer/reader knows what it means. But I don’t. So… what does it mean? XD

If I have one complaint it is the early dialogue the writers gave Reva. It was too cliché, which added to her one dimensionality. It didn't help me to take her seriously until later. There is cliché dialogue in SW, but if you give too much to one character it weakens them. I adjusted my initially low opinion of Moses' performance once I acknowledged she wasn't given great dialogue in the first half.

Honestly, my biggest Issue with this show was that it felt like a movie stretched out into a show. I do wonder if that’s what happened, like they had the script for the cancelled film lying around and made some edits.

technically 2 movies recorded as a tv show. plus everything at the cinema is just old Thinking. kill your past and move on

I wouldn’t get to hung up on the storm troopers. 3-1 with fire support is the appropriate number for an assault in the military. This was approx. 2 platoons against a 2 squad force.

Hard agree on what you said about the excitement going into Andor. I would love more stories about people in the Star Wars universe but outside of that immediate family line(s)

just my honest, emotional opinion - Riva's story arc was either ill-conceived or badly acted. so much so i can't tell which. her motivations just collided awkwardly with each other and she never came over as convincing. but, what was most disappointing for me was the entire series absolutely shredded Star Wars cannon of both Vader/Kenobi, and Kenobi/Leia. Vader and Kenobi's exchange at the end of the fight scene in episode 6 was the best thing in the entire series. i wished they leaned more into Kenobi's internal conflict and they introduced more characters like Tala to amplify his conflict (Tala's character was well acted by the way). for me, little Leia was the only uplifting thing of the entire series. her presence enhanced her legend.

Moses Ingram did a great job. In the beginning episodes , she was the most villain if them all
