  • Hi Cantonese learners! Let's talk about the common expression. "Have you eaten yet? 你食咗飯未?" Whether you are new to my channel, it's always good to review again and again in our language learning journey.
    I just spotted one error. Steamed fish, fish should be jyu2 instead of jyu4. Sorry about that.
    Remember, practice makes perfect.

    I am Amanda from Hong Kong. I make easy and practical cantonese learning videos for complete beginners to intermediate level.
    My full time job is a flight attendant. I enjoy studying foreign languages. My job allows me to visit many places and meet many people. So that I have more chances to practice what I have learned.
    Due to the covid, I haven't fly regularly for over a year. I find CZcams is extremely helpful for maintaining my language proficiency. One day, out of curiosity, I looked for cantonese learning channels. I was so surprised that there are so little and most of the good one are even from overseas. That's why I started "5 minute cantonese" on 2020.

    to make sure I'm understanding correctly from a previous video. I add 未 before the verb for negation (not yet), and after the verb for a question, but in a postive statement, it's 已經(already)?
    Also, love the new intro and music

    Can you do a video of the history of Have you eaten yet? like why do people ask this question? What kind of response are you suppose to give if someone asked you? For example, in English, if someone asked you "How are you?" you could respond with "I'm doing well" even if you actually are not doing well (it's a lie). Do you answer truthfully when someone asks you "Have you eaten yet?" If your parents ask you "Have you eaten yet?", do you answer truthfully or lie? Do you ask your mom back "Have you eaten yet?" I'm missing the cultural context. I don't ask my parents because they will accuse of not being Chinese enough (they are not very good teachers). Thank you for posting these videos.

    Thanks for the great lesson Amanda ! So the phrase "nei sik ng sik zo fan ?" is always meaningless ? Or there are contexts where it can be used ?

    • @5minutecantonese
      @5minutecantonese  Před 11 měsíci

      Grammatically it's not correct.
      it should be
      nei5 sik6 m4 sik6 faan6
      it means: Do you want to eat meal/rice?
