Why has Liechtenstein not joined Eurovision? A history of misunderstandings and lost chances.

  • In this video I look at the history of the Principality of Liechtenstein with the Eurovision Song Contest and why the country has (as one of only two countries) never participated in Eurovision.
We go back to the 1970s to reveal a history of misunderstandings and missed chances up to 2020. Why was "My little cowboy" by Biggi Bachmann selected as Liechtenstein's entry and then was never seen on a Eurovision stage?
Would you like to see Liechtenstein in Eurovision?

I'm a huge supporter in adding more countries and bringing back ones that left years ago. It adds diversity to the contest and good financially. I would love for Bosnia to come back when the time is right and for middle eastern and North African (if there's a scenario where they have better relations with Israel since that's the main reason) + Kazakhstan to join. I know there are logistical and/or political reasons why some can't easily join or return but one can dream.

For me only countries with territory in Europe should be allowed to take part. If countries outside Europe want to participate they should try to create their own Eurovision for their own continent. In the mean time as long as it didn’t workout (yet) they can be allowed as a guest in ESC for a couple of years maybe. That’s okay to me. But in my ideal contest all European countries are participating at Eurovision. So I’m afraid we wil probably not have any room for countries outside of Europe. All European countries should be standard at least.

@@bartsmits1185 I agree. Involving more and more countries outside of Europe makes me lose interest and doesn't uphold the original idea of Eurovision. Not everything has to be world wide inclusive.

I do have hope that the Vatican City will debut somewhere in the upcoming years at Eurovision. Because over the past years they have been achieving membership in some sports federations, and are currently trying to achieve more memberships of more sports federations. They also established their own Olympic committee. And are about to debut at the Games of the Small States of Europe. And they are trying to become members of the IOC and therefore debut in the next Olympic (Winter) Games. Pope Francis is also negotiating for the Vatican football team to be a member of UEFA and FIFA. And therefore participate at the next UEFA Euro’s and FIFA Word Cup’s qualifications. They want to send representatives to all these events, not with the goal to win. But as a symbol to the world that they are united with the rest of the world through friendship, respect etc. with their participation. So that’s why I can see them debuting with the same goals at Eurovision. And spread the Roman Catholic message to hundreds of millions of people all around the world. @eurovisionhistories

Poor Liechtenstein...maybe it's not meant to be. It would be a nice gesture if every once and a while the rest of us pick up the bill for a country who wants to participate but can't due to lack of money so they can join in once for free. If they're succesfull maybe it will lead to funding for the broadcaster in those countries. Who knows.

Also the excuse that they don’t got enough money doesn’t do it for me, as they are extremely rich. They say that they need funding from the government to successfully participate, but the broadcaster probably has enough money for them to do so than. Which country’s national broadcaster only wants to show national news on their news program??? Like I’m sure the Liechtensteiners are also interested in what is going on worldwide right? Than EBU membership is even more worth it. But even if they only want to have EBU membership to participate at Eurovision than its worth for them, because like I said they are an extremely rich country. Many countries at Eurovision take part with the goal to spread knowledge about the existence of the country around the world and boost tourism. This is in the interest of Liechtenstein. @@bartsmits1185 I wondered about that, I mean the country might be wealthy but the broadcaster can be broke AF..but from what I gather that is not the case. If the broadcaster has the money to participate then it is a lack of will from the executives and maybe they use funding as an excuse? I don't know. I also have no idea whether the people are very interested in participating..most of the people living there will be German, Austrian, Swiss...and their countries already participate..just throwing theories around to see what sticks :-) I don't know if that is the case. If we can get Austria to win maybe the EBU can invite Liechtenstein...short trip means less expensive :-) I don't know what else to say, I would love to see them participate even if it means that the rest of us need to pay their fee, if they get good ratings and positive feedback the broadcaster might step up and invest some money in Eurovision participation. If you think it might help I will gladly email 1FLTV asking them to please consider joining.

1FLTV is a small broadcaster like a mid-size town in a European country might run. Liechtensteiners can watch Swiss, Austrian and German TV and thus the channel has to find a niche. I do understand that the channel would rather pay 2000 hours of local coverage than 8 hours of Eurovision. The argument that it is good promotion for the country is true but the government has to take that on and they are apparently not interested

@@Stonebrook83 I think that Monaco has quit after the three year non-qualifying streak, citing the number of qualifiers from the semi too small for any microstate to be noted. In fact, many cite their 2005 entry as quite robbed by the running order, where they were placed right next to another diva ballad from Israel, which drew more attention on the night. Since, the juries have been introduced and semis have been split, so nations like San Marino have managed to qualify on occasion. There have been talks about Monaco and Andorra coming back for a couple of years now, but thus far, the things are prolonging, as we don't know how much of a national priority ESC is by now. TBH, I kinda don't understand the Liechtenstein's attitude to ESC. Sure, they are a small country, 1FLTV is a small company with limited budget, but honestly are public broadcasters in other small states like Monaco San Marino or Andorra richer? Is Moldovan or Bosnian public broadcaster richer?...
We see small or poor countries can participate for several years with some moderate success (like Bosnia), or even win the contest if they want, but for some reason - in my opinion - Liechtenstein just doesn't want. I'm not even sure Peter Kölbel could push this idea through if it lacks support THIS much. :/
And at this point, with their new director's attitude, I think we will sooner see the ESC debut of Vatican City.
With Pope Francis on the stage singing some Christian Metal song about turning the other cheek or forgiving 77 times, and several nuns or Swiss Guardsmen in the background playing guitars and headbanging :D (What I'd lie if I said I wouldn't want to see :D)
