  • In one of Chick’s recent live workshops, he covered what his process looks like for learning something new--starting from establishing the "Intention or Purpose" for learning it, going at it on a gradient (using a Mozart piece as an example), and then making the determination that he "has it" when it fits a certain criterion...

Chick Corea makes mistakes and corrects himself then does it right in humble fashion. I deeply appreciate it ❤️.

Chick really strikes me as one of the 'good guys', someone who has immense talent, has FLAT OUT 'made it', and still loves to teach and support or help people expose their talents to a much wider audience when he hears real talent out there that is not getting heard at nearly the level it should be. Their also seems to be no "Listen to me, I am great" kind of BS...just very useful hard won knewledge and wisdom to share.

Absolutely agree with you John Sikes. Chick's demeanor here is the polar opposite to a vid I just saw where a great player like pianist Barry Harris disses on the likes of Bill Evans, wtf? I've met Chick and he was as down to earth in person as he appears to be here.

Totally agree with your assessment on that interchange, as well. That IS just plain weird...probably insecurity, if I had to guess, actually.

Wow thank you Chic, advice from the greatest.
There is no universal judge, no authority, you choose the model or standard for yourself, and the objective is to play it to your own satisfaction. This is actually incredible advice for improvisers:i have sat at my piano for endless hours improvising until i hit a wall and feel i reached my limit, and i dont like that feeling, and he is saying thats the wrong way to practice. Thanks CHIC!!!

Not sure if you’re just kidding with us or not but in any case it’s so refreshing to see someone such as yourself going through the learning process because sometimes I feel like (as I get better) that I shouldn’t be having to spend so much time learning and practising a new piece.

Get familiar with the chord progressions, the guide tones and extensions ? Spend hours listening until your ear really sees every note for what is it, then it should be intuitive ?

You sir are a snob, if you think mozart was a stuck up guy who wanted people to play his things with an air of superiority you are mistaken. Mozart was prob a lot like chic, very open and masterful and loose and did not take himself so seriously. Chic is like mozart, a lot more like him than the imitators and noncomposers who spend decades trying to play mozart pieces and neber create anything
