How much do you need to know before you play?

- In this clip from a recent Workshop, Chick gives us some thoughts on the subject of "music technology" and theory, and what CZcams, Bach and Mozart, and Chick's classmate from Juilliard who cracked the code of Coltrane's playing all have to do with one another.

I can’t believe you’re gone Chick. Thank you for being such a cool guy.
Still makes me cry. In my opinion this is the biggest musical loss in a while. He just never stopped.
No, me neither...Rest in peace. Thanks for all your great music. I will sorely miss you - simply can't believe it...😭😭😭
Wow! I just learnt of his passing from your comment. You think some people will be here forever.. and in some ways he will be. RIP Chick!
@@drakemax1470 Wow! This totally isn't a scummy ad that has no place here!

“Music is the pleasure of sound”.
What a beautiful way to put it.
I just heard him say that! That's japanese, ya know
You never know you're gonna miss someone till they're gone. Chick was a legend in music. A changer of the game, and at the same time, a humble and very cool guy. We have his music to remember him though.
Untrue. You know who you're gonna miss, for the most part. There are some you don't, but most you do. So to say you never know just isn't true.
When I heard that he had died, I just couldn’t believe it. I was watching some of his videos and master classes on his channel. It is such a sad loss of a musical genius. RIP Chick, you will surely be missed.
awww
I just recently started getting into Chick's music. Looking back over these lockdown videos, it's clear he was such a great teacher too. I hate that he's gone, but in his final statement, he encouraged us all to play music and make the world better through it. Let's do that in his honor. If anyone wants to show me their music, let me know!
He just meant so much to so many of us. Never haughty, so accessible. Miss you sir.
I still can't believe that you are gone...Thank you so much for your Music...Rest In Peace Chick💓🎹🎶
It breaks my heart that Chic is gone Just a pure genus and a great person Got to hang with him and the Electric Band back stage once It was the most exciting feeling RIP Maestro
At least he left us so much amazing music and lessons! What a humble and incredible human being! Chick forever!
It breaks your heart, and you can't even correctly spell his name? You're shallow, and have no real friends.
@@20alphabet After reading a couple of your comments, I can tell you're projecting here ;)
"music is the pleasure of sound" lovely
1:30 "Music is the pleasure of sound." Well said! To each their own pleasing sound. Mine is new birdsong in the spring.
RIP dear Chick. Your faithful followers will miss you.
Brings tears to think he left so early. Such a great human being. RIP Sir.
R.I.P. Maestro, you were a great inspirationsfor musicians all over the world.
Wasn't he just the sweetest thing ?? Who
else reached out so much to aspiring improvisers?
I got to shake his hand in 2018 as he came out of the restroom in LAX. A musical pioneer. RIP
For all of his genius, just listen to the humility of this man.
We will always miss your kindness and talent Chick Corea. Thank you for all the amazing music.💓❤
Can't express the sadness of how much i miss Him. listening to him speak here , i think i can feel that he somehow knew that his days are counted for !? like he wants to just pass this Wisdom quickly. what a beautiful guy he was.
Tears all over my face... One of the greatest artists that ever existed is gone from this dimension, but thank Goodness there are countless videos, recordings, concerts, and material to dig for the lifetime. Chick will be always here. Forever...
I can’t believe it either. Miss him already. One of a kind.
I can say that I am at this stage in my jazz piano journey- where I am working out my own way of thinking of the basics of music; of the structure of the 12 notes i.e my primary colors, of music- and how they relate to one another to create and deliver "the pleasure of sound"
1st is learning classical music. Since I did that, I understand alot more about Jazz. Chick Corea is the GOAT
Aw man. RIP. Great artist, got to see him one time in radford, Virginia. He talked to people after the show and took pictures, seemed like a real nice guy.
Love this man. Will miss him terribly.
I love the fact he called his friend beautiful....man that's dope...how many ppl actually refer to someone as beautiful and not mean in from the physical aspect...
If You were here in the 60's or 70's .It was that ..Expressed as Beauty. We are now media maddened.
Thank you Chick Corea. I barely knew your genius. Life is too short.
I'm so happy that you had the presence of mind to videotape your thoughts about music and the world. God Bless you Chick!! Now God has two phenoms on the Heavenly Bandstand... George Duke, and You!!💕🙏🏿🔥
Wow! So devastated for this loss. What a humble genius and magnificent, iconic being. Thank you sir, for your passion and never ending walls of inspiration. I offer you a heavenly toast, 500 Miles High and beyond. 👏 👏👏 🎹 💕🎶🥂
Long time ago I came across "Crystal Silence" (the original version with Joe Farrell , or at least I believe this was the original version). And instantly became a fan of Corea. And I bought a vinyl of Return to Forever - was it Romantic Warrior? - I still have it somewhere, must go and find it. And there were pieces of an interview with HIM printed on the cover or on the inset, and he said something along "as an artist and a musician I have an obligation to find a language to convey something from myself to the listeners". That was his approach. And this was back in early 70's when jazz started to divide and many good and not-so-good jazz musicians became embracing harmolodic and free. Jazz in part became noise and Chick held on to his position, while many artists (not only the musicians) seemed to follow the logic that the least people understand what you're doing, the better artist you are. Some sort of an elitarian trap. Chick could do a lot of things and he did them with many musicians, never departing too far from this philosophy that the music must be understandable and as an artist he is obliged to build a bridge - and not the wall. This he was doing on stage to fellow musicians, producing excellent duos and trios which I think he excelled at (with Hancock, with Burton, with McFerrin, with Weckl and Pattitucci, to give a few examples). This we had a pleasure and joy to witness and experience as listeners, being offered the bridge. When the pandemics started, I noted he started with the master class thing and I said to myself there could not be a better time, place and person to do this.
.
And we lost him.
.
:-(
Chick will always stay here!!!
RIP to an incredible and insightful musician. I know you're up there jamming with some of the other amazing musicians that have passed with time.
Thanks for your very generous sharing of your knowledge and experience, many thanks!
So sad you're gone Chick...
Much respect, And thanks for all of the inspiration and insight. R.I. P.
Than you Chic for all you've done 🙏🎶🎸
Thank you for all the things that you gave us, Chick!☀️
RIP.
What a beautiful definition... music is the pleasure of (delivering) sound.
Thank you so much Chick
That is just a snippet of the wisdom shared by Mr. Corea. I hope his legacy will give birth to many good musicians.
Great infomation...THANKS!!!
Amazing Chick! Congrats!👏👍😘❤
Miss you so much Chick!!!
This is gold.
I like the fact Koss PortaPro's laying on top of that piano in a back.
Thank you so very much for being an inspiration to us all 🎹🎹.
Thank you, Mr. Corea !
Thank you Chick! Rest in power 🖤
Graceful man and he found the way out. He's in a better place I'm sure he ascended...I like the ad ice sir, I will continue to study those 12 notes thank-you. I think the message here is right. One needs to make their own sense of the chromatic scale.
He's in a better place? I don't know about that.
thank you teacher, you taught me all i know in music! ❤️
Was, just getting into all these Great videos from Chick .Then We all heard ..It is tough on Us. I, seen Return to Forever ,many yrs ago at Carnegie Hall .Was trying to conceptualize the Fusion . Complex for then.. Chick, sharing all these insights now ,are so needed. Thankyou /

Love the tight editing. Bravo for it!
Thanks Chick Corea!
Thanks a lot! Abraço...
He explained that so well
Thanks Chick. Light as a Feather ..
A beautiful human being☀️Rest in Peace.
I love his compositions and his playing and his encouragement in this short video. I believe I did see Chick Corea at the Both/And Club back in 1970 or 71 with the Miles Davis band touring shortly after “Bitches Brew” came out. I think Dave Holland and Jack Dejonette were in the band, also Dave Liebman and Airto!
I love these videos
Maestro, may you rest in peace!
Man, Chick.... you always make it seem so easy. RIP
Even the most dissonant note sets (would not call it chords..) sound sweet under these hands. Pure genius. RIP
Sad this man is gone. What an amzing musician
It's sad that we often don't appreciate what we have until it's gone 😢
Well stated
it always amazes me how guys like him just seem to make beautiful sounds magically happen by barely touching the keys...

Very sorry to hear he`s gone.
Where is the gig? What time do we show up? (See how those microphone stands are stacked? Unusual.)
He summed it up there at the end, thankfully we have access to the thoughts and knowledge of musical giants like Chick through our modern technology.

Great advice! Definitely left us too early, Chick.

Aeolian Pentatonic 'n you be Sailin' - SAILIN !!!!
what project did chick talk about, I'm interested in it
There are amazing musicians, and amazing educators. Sometimes you find both in one person. Chick was not one of them. His tip about learning music: "Take all 12 notes of the Western Chromatic Scale and learn as much as you can about how you can use them". What a great tip. Now everyone can play like Chick as long as they follow this simple advice, right? Well, I bet Rodger Federer couldn't teach us how to hit a forehand if his life depended on it. THANKS FOR YOUR WONDERFUL MUSIC CHICK! May it live forever.
have to admit...I don't know what the hell you meant by that post.
@@tomault3063 Well, how did Chick's video help you with improving your playing, really? Do you now now exactly, how, what, and how much of it to practice, or how to reach a specific goal? I saw many videos of Chick answering questions about how to learn this and that. Non of them helped me with finding ways to play better. Now, great educators can do just that. They may help you develop an effective practice routine, expertly explain in detail the theory of a particular topic, and so on. Chick was a genius who does things intuitively rather than with a conscious mind. (There is a reason why he dropped out of jazz school after a few months.) That's why he can only explain things with a very brought brush. Like in his quote: "To learn how to play jazz just take the 12 chromatic tones of the Western chromatic scale and discover as much as you can about them". Don't get me wrong. I am grateful for every note Chick recorded, and will listen to his music till the day I die. But a skilled educator he was not, and he never claimed to be.
@@musictrainingonline It's easy to play any musical instrument: all you have to do is touch the right key at the right time and the instrument will play itself. Johann Sebastian Bach
Rest in peace,MASTER.
I had no clue Pete Rose played sax. I thought he did was play baseball.
RIP Chick.
Rest in Heavenly Peace
Great advice! I dare add: after you learn all this, forget about it and start playing listening only to your soul!
RIP Chick you were that guy
appreciation abounding, may Chick rest in peace.

Idk why I didn't watch this channel when he was still here... RIP
Can’t believe it
Wow :( When was this recorded?
Does anyone know the setup he uses?
So, everything?
Anybody knows what book he's holding at the beginning?
