- Welcome to part 2 of "Sewing a late 1950's outfit"!. In this part I am showing you how I made the bolero and the pillbox hat, which was a DIY, using cardboard as I didn't have any millinery materials!
The pattern I used is a 1959 vintage sewing pattern that I got from the Vintage Sewing Pattern Company. It's the S3035 and it has 3 patterns, a wiggle dress, a bolero and an overkirt. The pattern size is 36 so I had to make alterations...

A possible DIY alternative to cardboard: Woven plastic bags from the bags some large (dry) pet food, and sometimes rice or other things comes in.
The woven plastic is waterproof, and goes through a sewing machine easily, and is fine to hand sew through.
I've used it for totebags, and belt linings so far. Anything that would require interfacing, but won't be machine washed. (It might be ok in the washer, idk. Definitely not the dryer!)
I think doubled/triple layers would work for the sides of the hat,and the top maybe one layer of cardboard, and a layer of the woven plastic cut larger with the tabs, so it can be sewn together.
Also I love the way the external darts look on the mock up! I'm inspired to do that as a design element on a too-large blazer. Thanks!
I think I know what you mean... but for my next project I will probably get some buckram and try to do it properly. It's nice to have alternatives though for when you're feeling creative and don't want to go out buying materials!
Thank you for your suggestion and I'm really glad you liked the way I did the darts. It was an improvisation and it worked great. So I think it will work for your jacket too! 😊🥰
Excuse me for reading your comment but I am delighted to know this. I am always throwing away massive empty dog food bags and it never occurred to me that they were waterproof (so essential when you have dogs to walk and live in the UK😂) and would go through a sewing machine. Now I’m planning … you’ve got me thinking about hats! And a great interfacing for belts too, as you say. Thank you for sharing! 💗

I love that hat! Such a clever idea! I'll have to try that.
Thank you!!! Let me know if you do try it! 😊
Such clear tutorial of the bolero and pillbox hat. You are so inspirational and so very clever how you have utilised the bedsheet and cardboard. Such amazing results. I hope your fingers are ok now❤
Thank you so much! I love using everyday materials and save money! My fingers have recovered thankfully, thank you! ❤️
This is just so satisfying to watch first of all, plus the final results look amazing! I love the hat!!!! You are insanely talented!!!
Thank you soooo much! You are the best supporter! ❤❤❤
Your bolero and pillbox hat look fabulous. I love the stylish flight attendant look. I actually have a book on airline style - those attendants look so glamorous. You bring your own original style to everything you do and are such a pleasure to watch and listen to (I’ve realised voice is so important on YT! - and yours is lovely). How I identified with the sore fingers. Mine were agony when I made my 20s flapper hat. To create a nice sturdy hat you can’t get away from layers that are agony to sew through 😏 I must learn to use a thimble. It’s rather naughty being a vintage sewer and not using one! 😂 Another great video, can’t wait for the next one! 💗🎀
Thank you so much for kind words and your support Samantha! I too love the flight attendant look and your book sounds very interesting! Oh I also need a thimble, one that fits and stays on my finger. We should be taking care of our fingers as they make beautiful things 😊❤️❤️
hello very beautiful video for the next sewing video please kindly film how to thread and operate the sewing machine please ok?thank you very much 😊
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it! Every sewing machine is different in the way it works so it's best for you to look up online your specific machine and see how it operates.
