  • I test using a Trangia stove under a Pathfinder stainless steel bottle stove and a X type Trangia pot stand
    Note: I don't not recommend using the Pathfinder stainless steel bottle stove as a pot stand for a Trangia type alcohol burner.
    Unless you invert the stove and add trivets, such as metal tent stakes.

    If the Pathfinder pot stand was turned the other way up with two tent pegs across the top to act as trivets it would act as a windshield for the burner. Heat transfer to the pot would be better and you would be able to use the simmer ring without having to move anything. All the best.

      That's how I do it but i use the spreader as trivet. If you put twigs inside, you have a wood burning stove

    I ran into this same problem with the PF bottle kit, I solved it by using 4 Allen head bolts in the raised areas on the stand which gave me around 3/8" clearance for the pot and allowed the flame to go through the stand instead of the vents and wood feed port. It works much better now, and the Allen bolts don't take up much room in the kit, I may weld them there soon.

    If you turn the stove up right, put the trangia inside with the cross on top, the cup or bottle fits inside nicely
    Its only mean for a wind shield when used with a trangia

    I guess not every combination of stand and stove work perfectly or are maximally efficient. In general I try to use my alcohol burners flame direct to pot with a stand that is high enough not to suppress, limit, or quench the cone shape flame that it otherwise produces. Something that puts the pot about 1 3/4 inches above the flame seems to do the trick. Additionally I try to avoid wind screens that restrict too much air flow....or are so confined that they super-heat the stove....since this seems to speed up fuel consumption.

    Exactly same experience here. The pot stand indeed seems to push the flames sideways. Additionally the fact that the cup is rather narrow does not help the efficiency either.

    Will the fancy feast DIY alcohol burner work with the Pathfinder stove? I have ordered the same Pathfinder kit that you have and was hoping to use an alcohol burner in that stove

    • @planetsideagent
      @planetsideagent  Před 2 lety +1

      The pathfinder is a great kit.
      I think the Fancy feast stove should work fine, ONLY, turn the pathfinder stove top down and place your Fancy feast in side. Place a couple of tent stakes across the pathfinder stove for pot stands so you get good heat distribution around your pot.
      I made a video on this technique you might take a look at.

    A nice informative Posting .. thanks.
    Yep, the Trangia Burner does suffer from Claustrophobia .. it tends to get hot under the collar and wants to run away if used in enclosed spaces. An Aluminium Windscreen that gives it 'room to breathe' is far more effective.
    I've never had a hankering for the Pathfinder Stove. Cooking / heating through that holed grid doesn't seem right to me. I originally thought, when first seeing it, that one used it the other way around / upside down. This way, it may, with some mods, be more effective .. similar to the GI Canteen Cup Aluminium Stove or an IKEA Hobo Stove.
    Slightly off base .. I noticed that you also potter with the Optimus 8R Hunter. Now THAT is a Stove! Bought mine new in the mid-70's .. still in regular used and as trouble-free and reliable as a Swiss Sewing Machine .. love it!

    • @planetsideagent
      @planetsideagent  Před 3 lety +1

      I don't see the pathfinder stove as a stove but as a secure pot base to place in the fire/coals.
      Those old Optimus and Primus stoves are great. Back in the early 70s when I started collecting backpacking gear the 8R and SEVA 123 were the gas stoves to have. I on the other hand being a poor collage student opted for a Bleuet S200 because it was a lot cheaper and easier to use.

      @@planetsideagent I still have my Camping Gaz Bluet 206 from the 70's. Used regularly .. gas cartridges are freely available here in Switzerland and give you the most bang $$$ for your buck.
      My little 'Globe Trotter' (with the two aluminium pots) that uses the 106 cartridge is in semi-retirement as the cartridges are no longer manufactured and my current hoard is getting low. One can though, use the Globe Trotter Burner on the the 206 cartridge holder, thus having the advantage of the two pots .. albeit a little longer when stored.

    I am suprised Pathfinder didnt think that design through better. If there was bigger spaces on the bottom and not just punched holes there would be better heat transfer. If the alcohol stove was closer to the bottom of the pot (ie the stand was a bit shorter) that would help too.
    Absolutely - turning it over would be a great way to use this stand, as a matter of fact I wonder if you could use it as a twig burner too if raised up a little for air flow?
    Many thanks for your video, I enjoyed it.👍👍👍

    Just found your video. Put the x shaped stand on ground. Put stove on top of x stand. Add 1 bolt with 2 nuts to each pathfinder pot standoff hole.
    The x stand raises stove off the ground closer to the stove grate off the cold ground. It also raises the flame above the large square bottom openings. The pathfinder stove then is a windscreen and pot stand. The nuts and bolts would raise the bottom of the pot hight to allow fame around the pot bottom and sides.
    I dont have one of these but it seams like it should work. As I prefer wood over alcohol fire, I would rather do it that way. But if I'm not allowed a wood fire and am permitted a stove fire, it sounds like it might work as a back up. I also saw pathfinder had little puck fuel pads. If they work, which I can't say as I don't have that either an x stand lid and might work. Just some thoughts, while I like my current wood stove I'd love to see if the works. It might cut half my stove weight.

    • @planetsideagent
      @planetsideagent  Před 3 lety

      Interesting idea, I'll have to give it a try. Your comment got me thinking, I'm going to try turning the pathfinder stove upside down for a wind screen and place the Trangia with the X inside. It might be open enough to prevent a thermal run-away.
      Those puck pads are a fire starter. I don't think they are strong enough to cook with.
      To save weight and cost for a backup alcohol stove look into a home built Fancy Feast stove, 0.8oz weight and has an intrigel pot stand, it also works well in very cold weather. I think It and the Trangia are the best alcohol stove options.

  • @justsayin7704
    @justsayin7704 Před 7 měsíci +2

    Looks to me like you're using the stove improperly. The end with the holes is blocking too much of the flame from the Trangia. Invert the stainless steel unit, put the Trangia inside and video the results.

The hobo stoves would make the light weight backpackers shit their shorts because of the "weight" but it was fun to make and fun to learn the different ways it can be used. You can cook with it using wood, a jet burner inside of it, or using the Trangia alcohol burner inside. Give it a shot, let.us know what you think.
