I love your renovation videos. I'm in the last stages of a total renovation of my 30 foot Californian trawler. Love the philosophy "So Much Better!" Vs. "Perfect". It's easy for me to get caught up in a rabbit hole trying to make things perfect. My pops calls it a "Sequential Vortex" Also cracked up at the comment "Sometimes a free boat is the most expensive boat" that really hit home for me as my current boat was "free" but SO MUCH work and money and time to do the whole project. I'm finally starting sea trials, and really enjoy your videos! ❤️🤍💯

A general tip for getting the most from a countertop ice maker: Most countertop ice makers make ice that is barely below freezing temperatures. Ice will usually last much longer in drinks if the user can put the newly formed ice cubes in a freezer a few hours, where the temperature might be below 0 degrees Fahrenheit, before using them. It is fun to see you guys working on a boat again; these are our (my wife and I) favorite videos. Thanks.

Also only ever use pure distilled or very highly purified water, or you'll be descaling the thing constantly.
(Hint: this also makes your Keurig last much much longer, too)

Pro tip for the shop vac: put two thick paper towels (blue shop towels) over the intake, leave a little slack, and duct tape around to seal off. Works just as good if not better than the filters and way cheaper.

One tip to save your vacuum cleaner filter. Is putting one layer of paper towel over the filter with a couple of elastic bands. When it is time to empty the vacuum, just replace the paper towel. You will be surprised how long your filter will last.
Wonderful ice machine. Next shave ice treats.
Oh one last thing. Your dog will love ice cubes in his water bowl.

So happy to see you reviving and old boat again! That's what attracted me to watching your videos, was showing how to repair / maintain / upgrade and older boat while traveling. You did the same with the truck camper build. You didn't buy a nice new diesel pusher motorhome, you kept it within a small budget that most people could afford and did the work with things that were readily available at the local home improvement center. I wasn't looking forward to your new boat, as it would be just like so many other channels: people buy nice boat, and make videos of them traveling on a boat that is out of reach for almost everyone. You do work hard, but don't ignore what got you to where you are. Sorry to kind of rain on your new boat you have on order.

I have lived in a most costly area of California for 44 years by doing Exactly what this couple is doing. Living off the wasteful habits of people who buy something and refuse to put in a screw or pick up a paintbrush. If anybody thinks what they do is unrealistic or mind boggy complex I can say 100% no, these projects are everywhere. My latest project is a house they sold that was to be demolished. Slowly, after time its been worked over from chimneys to basement and is worth it $ so worth it. Heres a couple hints for beginners. Get used tools and also, shop for, dont just buy materials. Clearance racks are sent from heaven.

I know from your Instagram posts that you have made it back to the Pacific Northwest. I want to encourage you to continue north into Canada to explore areas that are even better than the San Juans. I'm a sailor and in addition to racing on Puget Sound, cruised with my family for about a month each summer. Desolation Sound with warm 70+F. waters is our favorite spot and now our grandchildren love its warm water for swimming. British Columbia's inside passage is truly stunning wilderness, and the further north you go, the fewer the people and the better the scenery. Cruising in the Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlottes) we saw whales nearly every day, and once three species at once. Also, wanted to tell you how impressed I am with your amazing work on resurrecting the trawler. That was an amazing transformation in a short time, and it will be a great boat for our often windless N.W. summers. Looking forward to your coming adventures as you return to sail with your new cat. If there is a way to talk, I'd be delighted to tell you about our favorite places.

But, your careful and meticulous approach is actually amazing! When I do jobs of that size, I'm lucky to even finish in a timely fashion much less have it end up looking as great as your finished product. You guys are amazing and so is your work! Thank you for sharing this adventure with us!

The way I prefer to do non skid is to mix the polymeric spheres additive into the paint. Not as “Grippy” as sand type additives, but way easier to clean and comes out looking professional every time without any loose grit to worry about. It does not turn your deck into sand paper and you can actually rinse off hair! A real problem with some non skid paint, like the West Marine brand!

    • @Urban1cycle
      @Urban1cycle Před 2 lety

Very interested, which polymeric spheres additive you use? I'm about to top paint my sailboat and originally I used epoxy primer and then paint and then kiwi non skid but its just too hard to clean. I'm thinking now to switch to alexseal paint and not covering it with kiwi and use additive but I don't want to have it too rough or pain to clean like what I have now. Trying to find all the correct components for my project, lol

I have to say you nailed it with your realistic target of "So much better" because you've transformed the look of the old girl already. It really never ceases to amaze me how much better a coat of paint can make something look be it boat, bike, car or house. I've always enjoyed painting and I'm happy to see you find so much joy in it as well. This old vessel is going to look so much better when you get done with her. Even though you're moving fast to get back out on the water you're doing your best to do it right or as right as you can afford with the time you've given yourselves. Again great work and I can't wait to see you back out on the water enjoying the fruits of your labors...

One thing that may help with the reducer evaporation is they make different temperature reducers exactly for this reason. That way you can match your air temp to your reducer temp or even if you need a little more time to let the paint flow out.

We painted our boat ourselves a few years ago. We tried our best to get it as "perfect" as we could. We ended up with some areas that we weren't completely thrilled with, we see every blemish. It's rewarding though when people walk by our boat, or in one case recently yelled from the water how good our boat looks. It was the first time we had painted a boat, so it was a huge learning curve, that i'll probably not experience again, because I hope to never paint another boat......!

One suggestion about grit getting onto the smooth surfaces. Wrap shopping bag paper (or kraft paper) around a wooden block and lightly rub the affected areas. That should knock the grit off but will not damage the paint. Then do a touch-up roller paint job when finished. Otherwise, the boat is looking great.

I can relate to Sierra when Varnishing, total therapy. You start with hard sanding and scraping, usually listening to Led Zepplin, AC/DC really getting your aggression's out. Then you open the varnish can and one produces a very special(expensive)brush. You breath deep(yum yo k, yum yo k) and begin to do fine controlled strokes, usually listening to classical orchestra music like Hugo Montengro(the good, the bad, the ugly) by the time your done its Sunday, your tired, exhausted and ready to go back to your regular 5 day a week job til next weekend!

that's funny. I just bought one of those Ice Makers too. I saw it referenced on a farm channel. Good luck on the build. Those old Ocean sailers are bullet proof. I'm going to paint my 2003 Tiburon. I dred the sanding, can't imagine sanding a whole boat.

I have a pampered chef table top ice maker that is very similar to yours. As long as you check on it frequently, you can bag up around 10-15lbs a day. Use mine all day every day.

I have a similar philosophy.. it's the 20/20 rule. It only has to look good from 20 feet away or while moving at 20mph.

Enjoying your videos , you are both a great team together. Just for the future getting glue off surfaces from vinyl stickers, use furniture orange oil which is less expensive than goo gone, then use dry comet to help roll off the glue.. works great with not tinted glass as well and won't scratch.

We had a boat house neighbor lend us his ice maker and at the time it was not a big deal, but once we started using it, WOW! it really makes ice fast and does make a difference in the summer.
