Growing up my grandfather had a '79 50' Defever. It has been so fun watching you work on this boat, as I learned so much about boats and engines helping my grandfather with his boat. So much of your boat reminds me of his and the tasks I was given to help keep his boat running. Watching you deal with the engine issues while underway reminds me of the times I had to replace fuel filters when engines would shutdown while making the crossing to Santa Catalina in Southern California. Good times as a young man being taught so many life skills. I love my "Boat Work" t-shirt.

Going under the GGB is an exciting moment for any sailor who hasn't done it before. It's historical and iconic. My first time going under the GGB was during a sailboat race with the Blue Angels performing their aerobatic maneuvers right over the top of us. Imagine the sight of 4 (of a cadre of 6) flying underneath the GGB just as we were jibing to make our way back to the harbor. It will be forever unforgettable as long as my memory allows it to be.

The chance of warping a D-series Ford cast-iron cylinder head after one overheat which you caught so quickly is minimal.
Head-gasket is still minimal but possible.
And overheat quite a few times before they damage a block.
They are a very very forgiving engine.

Both those engines should have gotten new water pumps installed based on age of boat unless you knew they were only a few years old, also alternators should have been replaced or send into a shop for new bearings and testing... same for starters, you should always have one spare of each onboard... Starter, water pump, alternator, drive belts, filters, fluids, I would also keep a couple injectors.

  • @pauleohl

I had a Ford Lehman in my boat. Be aware that head gasket leak can show when the engine is under load but not at idle because the pressure of the hot gasses is much higher when lots of fuel is being burnt in each cylinder. So, watch the engine while Sierra is driving. I had a problem with exhaust gasses blowing into the antifreeze under load and blowing out the antifreeze. My repair was to install a large vented expansion tank that let the bubble blow through and vented overboard. I made the expansion tank from a discarded large fire extinguisher shell.

To late now , but if you get a freshwater leak on that engine which you can not rectify - these engine will run fine depressurized. Cap off, keep topped up with clean water and keep going. If depressurized you still have temp trouble you can remove the thermostat and regulate temp by engine load, slow down a bit.
Just to keep in mind incase you have to keep going one day with no options.

Boat looks great! Hope you made your weather window.
If your leaking coolant from a circulation pump, assuming its just a seal failure and the bearings are OK, you could pull the cap and fill with water to run the engine if needed. No need to pull it at sea if you don't have a spare. To check the bearings pull the belt and spin the pump by hand. Spins smooth with no excessive play bearings are OK. Leave the cap off and run it gently if needed for docking or a serious emergency and monitor the coolant level closely. Of course use coolant mix when you install the new pump. As long as the blades of the pump are not badly corroded those pumps are very rebuildable. Good way to save on the cost for a spare. Lehmans pump price is not bad compared with most others. Had a Mercedes pump fail - new pump was over $600!!

Dunno if you're aware but on marinenized car / truck engines you often can get the non marine parts for cheap and fast at every auto parts store. Especially stuff like alternators, starters, water pumps, filters, belts, ... It's just some research to get the correct part numbers. Often they don't bother to change the numbers on the part itself but have different numbers in the parts catalogue.

Just for future reference just because it is a marine application doesn’t mean an automotive parts store won’t have it and it may cross reference to another non marine diesel engine. It never hurts to check. And if it is a well known diesel engine manufacturer like Cummins or Detroit or cat. Then it should pretty much be the same pump as a non marine and the only difference would be the pulley. Just some food for thought.

Your not far from Santa Rosa which, for that area, is a bigger town. Up that line of coast, the towns are small. Eureka is a bigger town and hosts a good number of fishing boats. Crescent City and Brookings are towns that have fishing activity. Coos Bay might be a good place for emergencies. Beyond that, I don't know. That area of the coast north of San Francisco doesn't have any big towns. Just beautiful landscape, whales, sea lions, otters, and lots of white sharks (particularly around San Francisco.)
