From MAC PRO to MAC STUDIO - BUT HOW?

- I was hesitant to go from my MacPro to a Mac Studio because I needed to migrate all of my storage to external drives. OWC helped me make the move and it is working amazingly!

I jumped on the Mac Studio when it came out. Even the base model is a superior audio engineering machine. What a golden age to be a content creator.
I jumped on it also, I bought it loaded honestly im not happy with it. I have lots of errors, Disk Errors etc. It hasnt been as good. Probably protools but its still buggy
I always admire the effort you put into your content. You are an excellent creator.
Immer wenn meine Frau sagt "dass ist doch overkill, was Du da hast" zeig ich ihr eins Deiner Videos ;)
😅
Now it's a perfect time for grinding cheese with that Mac Pro case :D. We want to see a big cheese grinding video with it! :D :D. Hahaha Nice video btw! I wanted to buy that house next to there... But, it's ok.... Hopefully another house in a Dorf in the future!
This is great news! Very fine choice as well going with OWC, stoked about it especially with GS around the corner 🤘
Wow...What a great to upgrade with OWC that will work great for your studio! Wish u all the best👍 All the way from Mizoram, Northeast India.
I've been a Mac man sense you had to wind them up. (kidding) My first had a 9" B&W screen. I'm so happy to see someone so excited with Macs. I learned so much from this video in such a short amount of time, especially when the Mac gets along with other tech. Thank you very much. Not only are you an exceptional musician, but a true techno wizard. Much respect from your many friends from Florida USA 🍎
Hey Henning, you sure are upgrading things this time, new house/studio, just wow! I mean, that's why you're the best really... what else there's to say!
BTW, as an IT person myself (professional IT, with over 25+ years of experience) I wouldn't use a software RAID setup, it has to be a hardware-based thing. I guess, if it's just for a basic and personal setup then software might be sufficient. I think since your home network is expanding, and the amount of data you already have and will continue to produce, might require a rack-based storage server at some point, similar to a small office/workgroup commercial setup, and move away from external-individual drives. Wish you the best with this project, quite impressed with all what you've accomplished throughout the years. Cheers!
I was thinking the same thing. If you want to use RAID, use a hardware one (and a proper HW one, not a "fake" HW RAID). Software RAID is asking for trouble at the worst possible moment, no matter how trouble-free it might seem previously.
Very interesting to see what kind of IT setup you use!
You should have a small room with aircon, power protection etc… for you storage. Noise from disc fans is not nice, and may cause interference too.
OWC saved my ass when I tried to upgrade my 2008 Macbook Pro with an ssd. It was the only brand that delivered result.
really cool video, I always enjoy these sort of behind the scenes Videos
Just a couple of notes from an me as an IT-Guy:
you could also get like a Asustor Flashstor NAS with 12 NVME slots and 10Gbit Network to work and edit from and an additional NAS for Backups and long term Storage.
You currently have a lot of small Data-"pools" where you can save a bit here and there, but doesn't really looks like a coherent system and espescially does look like a lot of potential points of failure.
Agree to the posts above: admire your effort, and your CZcams and and course work, and wonder why you still use a Mac. I work on Macs because of Logic. But I will switch to Cubase and Windows soon, due to the policy of 🍏 making old computers slow and the lacking support on hardware problems. Trying to change an existing Apple configuration is a mess or extremely pricey. I’ve been using Apple since my Atari blew out his lights, but that’s how things go.😢🎉
I am running an OWC Thunderbolt Hub with super fast 2TB NVMes since I got the M1 Studio right when it came out. Runs very stable, never failed once.
Thanks to you I am ordering the Mini Stack as I type :D
Good boy!
Update: So I just ordered the miniStack STX on eBay with a nice rebate plus I just got myself some additional 12TB storage for it. Today is Prime Day and I got a 4TB NVMe plus a 8TB HDD for under 300 EUR that makes it under 600 EUR in total. Thanks for the video, right on time :x
Damn! That is - the Mac Studio - is good stuff. Aside from the really annoying incompatibility issues caused by apples introducing things like FireWire 400 and 800, then thunderbolt. Then they play with usb c and call it thunderbolt 4! I can’t afford, nor justify, getting a Mac Studio, or Mac Pro. God I would love one or both. And the storage…Wow! I can only afford getting secondhand tech. Like the MacBook Pro 2012 & and 2014 model. I’m now looking at some 2015, 2017 & and 2019 models. My audio interfaces are focusrite pro 40. I’ve got an apogee duet, a UAD Volt and of course the likes of the HX Stomp, and HX FX. Handy for direct recording ideas into Live. But living in a one bedroom flat means space is a premium. I have excellent sound insulation throughout my flat as I like to read novels, textbooks and other literature. Mounted up on book shelving - brill bass traps! I make do with what I can afford. Then there’s the instruments. Over 30 something guitars, a dozen acoustics, with different flavours. There’s 5 basses and some ethnic instruments like the Puerto Rican Quattro. I could go on. I’ve got half a dozen low wattage amps. Love ‘em! Thanks for your insight and B.S. free knowledge and for the chuckles Henning. 🤟🤟🤟
very cool vid.
Working in a photostudio in post production our boss treats us with Core i7 iMacs from 2015. 😢
Ouch
This is awesome!
The next step is getting a video editing server.
Kinda sucks that NVME raid isn’t compatible with the latest Mac os. Hope they fix it soon or already.
yeah, that should be fixed very fast
OWC is great for solutions.
Why not use a NAS? Connect over Ethernet (wired up to 10GB or Wi-Fi if that is fast enough) and have one raid 5 accessible from multiple systems with no USB or TB ports consumed? There are dozens of enterprise grade solutions out there.
I found a company that makes a TB ‘dock’ in the Studio/mini form factor that has space for an NVME, a 2.5” drive, and card readers for SD, Mini SD, and CF Express
I see you had to bring in the expert to make sure it was put together properly, she is indispensable
There are optical thunderbolt cables that can run up to 50m, if you need that. You might also want to consider getting a NAS to keep in your machine room, so you can keep archived projects/resources/backups in a co-ordinated way without the drawer full of external drives :). You could edit directly from a fast NAS over multigig connections, but given you already have fast direct attach storage for editing, consolidating all of the rest into a 'regular' NAS would clear a few drawers and make everything accessible easily (and if you ever decide you want actual backups, it'd be easiest to do from a central NAS, although I don't fancy the bills for online storage much!).
I have a Synology NAS with 6 Slots and 10GBE Lan - I measured 700MB/s with Blackmagics Disc Speed Test. Though some software does not like if you use files over the network - but it feels good to have so much space with decent speed - and redundancy (using synologys version of a raid5). I can recommend it. But it needs to be in another room ;)
That is if macOS can actually keep a connection to a network share.
"Unne" und "Unnedrin": Love it!
eija.... is doch drunner, oder net?
I would have expected faster speed from 8 HDDs’.
How much closer to becoming a broadcast studio are you now with the Big Mac?
Edits: whilst listening i was reviewing German broadcast laws seems now i have to study up on the EU’s broadcast laws. Then I’ll submit my proposal for a 24hr infotainment network. With cartoons every morning!!!!
Let me know when the new studio is nearing completion and I’ll start a site survey for the broadcast tower.
All that money on computers and still can't make a circle on his Etch-A-Sketch.

@@EytschPi42 I think I know what someone is getting for Christmas this year 🤗
The mac studio is a beast but the price is reduculious
If you can sell me a 300 TB hard drive, I would buy that. The more more hard drive the better.
What harddrives did you use? There are two common types of recordings, the harddrives do: shindled and conventional. If theese are SMR ones, they may eat up all the performance of the RAID. Plus: If you are in an rebuild-situation, it will take ages to finish. Not talking about hours. Talking about many days!
No clue what those were... Seagate 16TB
Using the Pause-function i managed to identify WD Ultrastar 22TB and Seagate Exos x16. Both of them conventional. That's the better stuff. Man, your M2 must be blasting through the Vid-Coding....
First, why aren't you hitting Linus Media Group (Linus Tech Tips: LTT) for guidance? And second, why don't you have an LTT Screwdriver? Dave Friedman has one.😜
@@EytschPi42 Final Cut - fair enough. :D
You want to fry a board, use a vacuum on a computer....
Remember that this is propaganda by OWC. They are known to have CZcamsrs like for them. For example , for years they lied about noise telling the boxes are quiet when they are not and they have little to no fan control (talking about the thunderBays). The products are expressive for what they are ( no raid controller) but you know they are going to be easy to disassemble, clean (super important because dust is an enemy of electronics ) and no shenanigans yo expand the system in the future. So if you can handle the noise they are a good option. The thunder-blade is totally silent, but it’s not clear they are supporting expansion. For the Mac Pro cards I will suggest you go with sonnet , better price and performance is more consistent
This is 100% not OWC propaganda. don’t talk about stuff you don’t understand. I went with OWC because I like their stuff and they helped me a lot. Your experiences are not necessarily every one else‘s.
So all this because Apple just couldn't have sensible internal storage options on their desktop systems so you'd at least need to rely less on external devices.
‼️”which is silicon based”
Dear god Apple has ruined a generation of lexicon.
As if there is any PC that isn’t silicon based 🤡
It's true that it's much simpler to do whatever you want with Windows, you have more options and it's less expensive. But if you need to use a Mac, I understand. The issue is that you don't have much choice, you're forced to adapt with the few options that Apple offers you.
