I can explain your issues :
1) the drive issue is a permission issue. You can fix it if you change the permissions of the main folder and folders underneath on your external drive to all users as read and write. Since external devices don’t work as a root folder permissions are necessary.
2) Plugin loading in Pro Tools… You probably work in Rosetta Mode and that’s why you have this long loading times. If you would try a native DAW, you will not see any issues like that.
3)Mouse issue: put some paper in it since the battery issue is an old one… the new Magic Mouse would be the better solution… one charge is enough for a month and you don’t have connection issues at all.
4) you can fix the fan „issue“ with an external tool and set the fan rpm to 1000-1100 without having issues under max load. You can use software like Macsfancontrol for it.
what the fu*k about having a new device then if you have to use it this way?
@@freaky425 probably because it is much faster then any Intel machine ?! Also the Pro Tools issue will be fixed as soon as Pro Tools release a native Apple silicon version. The write permission issue with the external device can be fixed in under 20 seconds. Aswell as the fan control story. I don’t regret switching to Apple silicon and I had the 28 core Mac Pro aswell so I can compare it quit good I would say. 90% of the VSTs are also Apple silicon native and I don’t have any issues working with Studio One.
@@prodby430 cool! I am still with 2018, 32 Ram touch bar, and just observing when to spend 5k$ again. I think that mixing skills helps a lot, since we use too much unnecessary fat and this affects performance as well. A simple panner and the Ozone Elements does wonders , for example , if the source sounds already good
@@prodby430 finally, someone on youtube talking sense 👏
@@prodby430 Is it fast? Yes. But ANY Intel machine is a stretch. Given the cost will be a bit high (though competitive to a $9,000 Studio), you can easily build a 32-core, 256GB RAM intel system that would crush an M1 Ultra Studio for about $12,000.
Here's the kicker: You can build an AMD 64-core Threadripper system that will absolutely obliterate ANYTHING the Studio can do. For $8,000.
I was having the same hard drive issue on both my Mac Studio and Intel Mac Mini when I updated to the latest pro tools. I was prompted by PT to set my hard drive to “R” (which I think literally means record lol 😒) inside PT via the workspace (I think) to able to record to my drive. That solved it for me.
unrelated-but..... a few years ago I was working on a broadcast automation system where we replaced a VTR with a mini server, for tapeless delivery of commercials. the vendor promised us that the server would emulate a VTR in regard to its remote control protocol.... but being tapeless, when the automation tried to cue the clip in the server, the response was almost instantaneous- "I'm cued", which threw an exception in the automation because no VTR on earth ever cues instantly- it has to back up the tape to the right frame & that takes a finite time, often several seconds.
so..... maybe.... with the better buss speeds in the new mac, maybe protools is getting a 'write' acknowledgement back from the drive sooner than it is expecting.
just a thought. have yyou raised a ticket with PT?
Dump Pro Tools and get Reaper
@@garymorrison1009 is absolutely right.
Tip for the mouse problem: I used to have connectivity problems with my old Magic Mouse. It was a problem with the batteries having too much space in the battery compartment. A piece of paper folded a few times wrapped around the batteries resulted in a lot less connectivity problems for me.
I've heard this as well. The advice I got was to put small pieces of tin foil at the battery poles. I don't know how paper works, as it's generally not conductive!
@@svenisaksson3970 Great. I don't put the paper at the poles, but around the sides of the batteries. It more to hold them in place. So conductivity is not an issue in this case.
Same here, a piece of paper fixed it.
I'm running both Logic and Studio One 5 and haven't had any issues with plugins loading or SSD drives. The Mac Studio blows away my previous Mac and it was a great machine.
Glad things are going smoothly for you!
@@ColtCapperrune I’m not in Rosetta, most of my plugs I use have been updated and work on monterey. Rosetta was giving me some trouble.
@@claymillsmusic Clay how are you liking Studio One?
I absolutely love it, there's no way I'm going back to Pro Tools!
@@watchtheskies I’m loving it. The workflow is incredible. Loving it more than Logic or Protools now.
First time watching one of your videos. Very well done, good vibe, and informative. Not sure a lot of your videos will be right up my alley since I work minimally with audio, but you got a new subscriber!
I just bought a mac studio, the basic 32 memory 500 gb and a samsung solid 1tb external harddrive and I have never been so happy, I use logic, luna, melodyne studio and I have no problem recording everything on the external harddrive.
1:35 if you open a workspace in reaper and then open volumes, you will see all your drives. For drives you want to write/record to, make sure to select the R in front of the mode column. R makes it so you can record to them!
On the edge about a Mac upgrade from my iMac 2014 so this was very informative. Thanks!!!
Thanks - good stuff to know. This machine is on my list to upgrade to. Coming from a 2012 MacBook Pro, so yeah, it’s definitely time.
Thank you so much Colt, this video was very helpful to me. I really wanted to make the plunge yesterday to buy one, but I'll wait a bit before switching from my Windows PC i9 which still works fine. I have zero issues. I have two MacBook from 2012 and love the system and the audio aggregate thing that we don't have on Windows, at least natively. There are too many audio plugins that aren't still Silicon compatible for now, so I'll wait and save my money in theses difficult times and that's thanks to you 😄
Great video! Thanks for making it.
You should get the rechargeable mouse Magic Mouse 2, it takes few minutes to charge if you are in a hurry, when Magic Mouse is fully charged it can run for about a month or more between charges. I was thinking the same way, but when I got it few years ago it proved it wasn’t a big issue. Thanks for your video.
Thanks for that update mate, good to hear about this topics. Props for the TH AR GMT, its a nice piece.
Running a 2014 Mini, the Magic Mouse gives me the same disconnecting issues you’re having. Thankfully it’s not my studio machine, and it’s good to know it’s a widespread issue instead of isolated.
I use Studio One 5 and I use an m.2 ssd with an enclosure as an external drive because I put all my plugins in there for portability (using pro max macbook). I have no issues with recording or mixing straight into it or out of it, but I do have the first instance beachball for a good minute thing as well. So I think it rules out the protools issue, hopefully everything becomes native and consistent soon!
Thanks for the informative video! I think I'll get a one soon for sure.
Try the new Magic Mouse. Using all day, battery lasts about a month. If you run out of battery, you can charge it for a couple minutes and go for another hour. Maybe completely charges in an hour. The old one like you have, it used to feel like the batteries were always going dead. Also the pairing, plug it into the usb cable and it's paired. Want to use it on another Mac, same thing and it only takes a couple seconds.
Magic mouse is the most unergonomical mouse ever made.
@@soulscape5083 Stated as fact! I think the point was that he already used the Magic Mouse and I just suggested the rechargeable version.
I have my Mac Studio running entirely on M.2 SSDs, aside from a HDD dock to access old PT sessions and fortunately had no such issue. That said, moving from a 2011 Mac Pro to the Mac Studio was not without some teeth grinding and second guessing my life choices. Most of my issues were random plugins sparking the pinwheel of death.
Just a tip for the gen 1 Magic Mouse. Getting rid of the battery cover made my connectivity issues and dropouts disappear almost completely (except of course when the batteries start getting low on power). Hope this helps.
I have 2 Mac Studios in use for different aspects of production. One of them had some issues out of the box, specifically with USB ports. Some devices would work on the front USB-C ports but not on one of the rear USB-A ports. Other devices would work on the USB-A ports, but not the front USB-C ports. The other Mac Studio did not have those problems and all devices have worked on all ports. I took the malfunctioning Mac in for service and they replaces practically everything: Logic Board (10-core CPU, 24-core GPU, 32GB), USB-C Ports (front), and
I agree that old mouse has become a nightmare i changed mouse! I agree the only good thing on it is the way with fingers to move from pages. Pro tools always had trouble forever .thank you for the feedback for the mac studio
Guarantee you that beachball issue on the plug-in initial instance is a graphics issue. Could be Rosetta related but Try changing your display color settings to sRGB. That’s what PT likes best.
Thanks so much, I am considering this machine!
I am running Luna and it’s been flawless so far. Loving mac studio. All my programs and samples are on the onboard drive 2G and then I have a fast SSD outboard drive for song/music files. Also got 64 gigs or Ram. I’m unstoppable. Lol
I do have the same things with some plugins, I guess these are the ones that are not M1 native, Rosetta is a bit of a pain imo. Except that, it runs very very well to me! The fan is not a problem in my case, my room is not so quiet, I can't barely hear the fan on day, on evening that is sometimes different (according to my fatigue and so). But yeah, I'm so glad I switched from an old mac mini to this M1 pro.
I think that is the problem. When the plugin with x86 instructions is loaded for the first time, Rosetta wil convert it to arm instructions, this wil take a few seconds. After that is is cached.
I have had issues with external SSD drives before on my old iMac before moving over to Mac Studio. The only thing I would say is to ensure that it is formatted for use on a Mac. Not for Windows or a mixture of the two. This fixed my issue as I was seeing terrible performance and lots of errors.
I switched to a Logitech MX Master 3 mouse on my M1. Includes a horizontal scroll wheel as well as the good old vertical scroll. You can also program for example a few favo shortcuts, and assign them to one of the buttons. Best feature i like actually is the thumb-rest, which i didnt see coming to be honest. Not dragging your thumb over the desk does make a difference, really. Might want to give it a try. Oh and it is rechargeable with a usb-c cord, while you still continue to use it. The only downside i found is to use it with another machine (you can switch between 3 macs for example) you need to press the button on the - drum roll - bottom. Duh! But if you're not a frequent switcher, you should be fine.
I have the same mouse and absolutely love it!
Same and it’s great! Only downside I experience is that the Logitech app is not m1 compatible yet so the mouse has an ever so slight delay….
I’ve been using an MX Master 3 for 3-4 years now (previously using MX Master 2) and took delivery of a Studio Max a few weeks ago (Trashcan MacPro previously). No mouse issues that I can see and I use it 10+ hours a day. The Studio has a few minor quirks that I’m sure will be rectified once Adobe and Apple get in sync. After waking the Studio from sleep mode, my Adobe programs will have the tops of the windows in the center of the screen and it’s tool panels splashed across my second monitor. I don’t know if that is a Studio thing or just an M-chip thing but it’s only the Adobe programs. Also having fun tuning in the sleep/wake settings.
Hard drive issue: There is the possibility for some users (although I’m sure you checked this) that they simply need to define the drives in ProTools as record drives. PT doesn’t automatically record to all drives. This would be evident to someone who finds that recording works on the internal drive but not an external drive.
I had that problem at first too, but my drive kept disconnecting, I tried replacing the USB-C read cable and it worked for a week then started happening again, replaced it again and it just started happening. IDK what the hell is going on or if I have a bad dock but this seems like rosetta SoC thing. Somethings fucky
I've recorded with an M1 Max laptop to that exact Sandisk drive
Your channel just came into my timeline and this video is very helpful as I'm deciding should I wait for upgrade to M1 mac mini or go with this one. My home based studio work needs an upgrade so I can load in more plugins. I'm a new subscriber and I create gospel music lessons instructional videos and music.
Hey Colt, long-time ProTools user here and also an Avid Certified Instructor for ProTools. You might want to check the Disk Permissions IN Protools. Navigate to Window -> New Workspace -> Default and open the Workspace browser. Check if your SSD drive you are using to record on has the permissions set to "R" and not "P". Occasionally, PT might glitch out and change the permissions for whatever reasons. I've experienced it once even though my settings were all the same and I didn't change anything in PT. I hope this eliminates the possibility of that setting in PT itself. This will prevent anything from recording onto the disk itself in PT if the permissions are changed from "R" to "P".
Hi Colt really great video! Could you please make a video that explain how to work on external hard drive, and everything related to external hard drive for music production, recording, mixing, plugins, SSD etc... Thank you!
The "First Instance" thing happens across Mac products... happens on Mac Mini as well... that is when we’re talking about audio apps... logic, garage band, audacity
Hey pal. I believe the plug-in issue is strictly PT related as I started having the same issues since upgrading to the newest version. Lag when loading up the first instance of a plug-in and then PA console strip plugins trigger the compression metering in PT without actually doing anything. Same issues with the mouse as I was using a v1 Magic Mouse. The Bluetooth in those older units just go downhill. Same thing happened to my v1 Magic Trackpad and I had to replace that.
Nah, happens on all daws
great intro music!! first time watching your vids
What I've discovered on my Mac Studio is that the rear Thunderbolt/UBS ports are defective. They cause consistent drop out, freezes, crashes and more fun stuff. The front ports are All Good, but the rear ports are a disaster. And I need those ports to work perfectly. This is my first new Mac in many years (I have so so so many Macs but in the last few years Apple appeared to lose their way and I ended up building my own Hacks instead to great effect), but have been wanting a reason to move back to their hardware - and the M chip was it. Unfortunately, after many dozens hours of tests and searches, I've concluded this is a very common issue, not likely related to software and despite how much I want to love it and boy do I ever love the M chip and GPU engines, my Studio is ...well much more a Lemon than an Apple.
My little brother loves the Studio for Graphic design. He designed a Kambucha bottle. I have the M1 and the Studio is on my list but I gotta get a LYNX Interface. Time to upgrade from the Apollo.
I initially thought the same of the Magic Mouse 2 when I had to pick one up. Turns out they last an incredibly long time on a single charge, like I'm talking 2 months + and thats with me using every single day 8 hours or more. It also charges very fast, so the very rare instance when I've had to charge it in the middle of the day, I can get 40% or more in like 15-20mins. I have had the connectivity thing on the new mouse though, never on the old one and i'm running a 2020 MBP.
That actually sounds fine, thank you!
I still feel like practicality should come before looks when it comes to everyday hardware...
I use a Trackball with Apple Track Pad. Try switching to Thunderbolt 3 or 4 cables as they cover all the standards of USB. Also, if your hard drives have special software check to see if there is a firmware update for it.
Colt, on your Magic Mouse. Make sure there isn't oxidation of the battery contacts. I've seen it cause drops and flaky behavior. Take a q-tip and some rubbing alcohol and clean the nickel colored internal battery contacts. Then hit it with a dry swab and make sure it's super shinny. You do that and you should be good to go. I use that mouse as my backup when I have to charge one belly up. 🙂
Yeah that disk issue is probably Rosetta-related, I have the same SSD's and no problem at all using Logic in native mode with those. Definitely having to deal with other issues though, like projects taking forever to open, and massive CPU spikes/system overloads when hitting play or moving the playhead around in big sessions. For the fan, the noise can be lowered a bit by installing Macs Fan Control (free app), you can lower the base spinning speed to 1100 instead of the usual 1300+.
weird, since i'm using logic in native mode, the project loading times are ridiculously fast. 100-200 track projects loading up in 10 sec.. to be honest at this point for me the whole logic experience with a lot of third party plugins is more flawless than ever before on any intel machine.
@@mikloskovacs3734 are you on Logic 10.7.3? What happens for me is the plug-in loading window opens and the progress bar is stuck on klopfgeist (the metronome thing), and after waiting a while the project finally opens. Maybe it's due to some particular plug-ins causing issues. Those sessions have 100+ plug-ins, but still, it's taking at least as long as it did with my old iMac, which is really weird.
@@davidbmixing yea i'm on 10.7.3. weird.. my guess would be that it's a particular third party plugin causing this
@@mikloskovacs3734 yeah I'm gonna do tests for sure, see if I can find the culprit(s) and replace them with something else. It's gonna take a while for all the software not to act as a bottleneck for the machine's actual capabilities.
@@davidbmixing plugins from these companies work without issue for me: UAD, Waves, plugin alliance, fabfilter, melodyne, izotope, soothe, sonnox, soundtoys, valhalla.. maybe this helps.
Thank you for this!
A lot of people seem to "hate" the magic mouse in general. I loved it since i first start using it! I have the second gen for awhile now. I'm happy with it.
I have the Logitech MX Master 2 but it doesn't quite work for me. I don't know but i love the ease of use with the Magic Mouse. Also, for the charging, i mostly let it charge at night. It charges incredibly fast! It is absolutely stupid to have such a design that prevents you from using it while charging though. But if you are like me and you charge it over night, it doesn't really give much problems. Another option would be to buy a second one. So that you always have one charged and one in use...
I think the Mac Studio is a great machine. But i'm still happy i made the purchase i did around 2-3 ago when i bought the 2019 Mac Pro. I have zero regrets. It's quiet, reliable, i have 96GB of RAM with 8TB and a 16-core CPU. Only thing lacking is my GPU which is only the AMD W5700XT with 16GB.
The weird little quirky things that happen with the Mac Studio is one of the reasons why i don't want it right now. Though i must say, i work with Logic Pro X. So it might work a little better because its software from Apple. I don't know. Anyway, since the second gen of M1 has been revealed, i assume it won't be too long before we finally see that new Mac Pro as well. I'm pretty curious though i am completely fine with my Mac Pro for now.
Upgrade your mouse to the Logi MX MASTER 3 FOR MAC. It has a scroll wheel by the thumb that you can make scroll left and right. Then up and down with the top scroll wheel. It also has 3 other buttons that I programmed to do a few other things.
The inability for protools to record to your external drive is likely a permission issue. Your external disk has open read permissions, but something is wonky with your write permissions. You either need to grant write permissions on the drive across the board, or grant protools permission to write to the external drive.
Quick comment on the mouse. I have two mouses with the rechargeable USB. That way when one needs to be charged, the other one is already charged and I just connect it until my main mouse is good to go. It’s a pain. But there are no issues with it disconnecting. Keep in mind I am on an Intel processor with the iMac Pro
Get the track pad! soooo tactile and you can leave it plugged in. It's the best ever once you get used to it. sounds like you would like it though since you like the scrolling feature on the Magic Mouse.
ProTools is definitely janky running on M1 because it's in Rosetta. Some plugins, won't work properly at all (e.g. Acustica). Who knows when Avid will get their sh*t together... they're already way behind by not being M1 native and I don't even know if it will happen this year, all this for the annual price of having access to updates, but not this, the most important thing they should be focusing on.
Man, I guess I was childishly assuming Pro Tools would be/was straight M1 (non-Rosetta) ready by now. That's disappointing as hell lol
Wasn't Rosetta supposed to work seamlessly? I would blame Apple for this, as not every developer can keep up with major breaking changes in the OS every year. For example, some controllers that require drivers still use the same driver for Windows 7/8/8.1/10/11 (that's 10 years of compatibility!), meanwhile on MacOS it needs 4 different versions for Mojave/Catalina/Big Sur/Monterey. Yes, Apple changed the processor architecture, but it is their job to ease the transition while 3rd party developers catch up.
I have the mac mini m1 with 8gb or ram and Pro tools Runs amazing on it with all kind of plug-ins and I also have an external solid state 1tb drive where I have all my projects and I’ve never had any issues
@@lumer2b It does work seamlessly but there can still be some randomness from the program itself. Apple also did make it very easy for developers to migrate over. Many moved pretty quick, some took longer, like Ableton just became M1 native earlier this year. They have for sure made it easy for developers. What controllers are you talking about? If it is usb class compliant there is not driver at all.
@@seancca Roland synths aren't class compliant and need drivers, one new driver every year for MacOS, same driver forever for Windows. Yamaha needs driver for full functionality, same thing. Class compliant devices were even worse: Native Instruments Traktor DJ could get the hardware damaged by just connecting to a Big Sur machine (M1 or not) back when Big Sur was released, and Komplete Audio interfaces misbehaved. They are all class-compliant and the problem took a few months before Apple fixed it. Some docks could brick MacBooks because of a macOS bug. Apple keeps pushing a new version every year and releases a product that is not even pre-beta quality and has all kind of issues with software that worked fine before, that's not being developer friendly. I'm still running Catalina on my Mac, meanwhile Windows 10 which was supposed to be shit never had this kind of issues with my hardware.
I agree with some of the comments below - PT could be the problem here. I have my Mac Studio using Logic, and a few external SSDs - SanDisk, Samsung, and G-Drive and no issues reading and recording to them. I think all my plugins (a lot of different brands) work in Logic Pro - no issues. After about a week of using I switch off Rosetta, and things run even smoother. I expected some plugins will not load but so far so good. I've heard issues with ProTools and M1 Macs so likely not a Mac Studio issue. The only issue I had was Bluetooth strength. Where I put the Mac Studio now is not a direct path to my MS BT mouse, and I found it "jerky" a lot of times. Never had this issue with my old iMac Pro.
Weird. Been recording to and mixing from that exact drive in Pro Tools since day one with my Mac Studio (about 5 months now), and I’ve never had an issue. Maybe it’s a disk permissions setting in Pro Tools?
FYI, Mac Studio two front USB-C ports vary between the Mac Studio M1 Max and Mac Studio M1 Ultra. On the Max the two front ports are USB up to 10Gb/s while on the Ultra they are 40Gb/s transfer rate. Only the Ultra uses Thunderbolt4 on the two front USB-C ports. This appears to be a limitation of a single Max SoC processor while the Ultra has two Max SoC's on the same processor die therefore adding support for more Thunderbolt channels.
Do you find it more powerful on daily use compared to your 16gb M1? Not hypothetical situations, but real life scenarios... Thanks!
I had went back to the Mac Mini 2014 with the 16gb!!!! No more 🌧 rain in the clouds for me lol 😆
The old Magic Mouse uses older Bluetooth 2 or 3. The new one is Bluetooth 4. Either way, go with a Magic Trackpad. Opens up access to more gestures and the charge plug is on the back of it. And now they are available in black without having to buy a Pro Mac desktop.
Hey Colt! I've been on an M1 since they came out. A majority of what you are having issues with is due to Rosetta. At least the problems in ProTools.
I wondered, I bought the M1 laptop as soon as it came out as well, but it wasn’t my daily driver for music production, so I didn’t have any of these issues with it. Thanks for the comment!
@@ColtCapperrune No problem man, seems like you kind of figured that out yourself tho. I had to deal with Rosetta for almost 2 years. Way too long if you ask me but that's how these things work. I work in Logic so thankfully I've been native for almost a year. Just wait till you can switch off Rosetta hahaha. It gets even faster. :)
Love the beach ball description ❤😂
Did you format those drives on the new mac OS or were they formatted on an old mac? Fat32 or macJournaled? I have had problems formatting drives on a new mac and then my old macs wont see then, could work visa versa also
The first instance beachball is the Rosetta working to translate, once its translations done, it runs as native
Honest video. I’ve had my share of issues as well. I still have to convert USB-A 3.0 to 2.0 via an adapter otherwise it is glitchy. Also issues with my Sandisk getting hot even when in sleep and ejected, but still plugged in. Logic Pro has been also glitchy via working off the Sandisk. Otherwise it’s been good, but not surprisingly better than my M1 16gb 1tb Mac Mini.
My Mac Studio is having a problem with left-click renaming. In Music, left click just plays the song rather than renaming it. I can get it to rename about 10% of the time. Sometimes I can’t even move the tracks. If I try it will just play. I also can’t rename folders on the desktop…I’ve tried multiple mice & in system settings I’ve tried every level of double-click mouse speed. I have no problems on my wife’s Mac Mini. We’re both using Ventura, though I believe she has a slightly earlier version. Also, many times I’ll click an area up top to arrange by: artist or genre & it won’t do anything. I’ll have to click it 8 times or so for it to follow the command.
I had that problem with the drives as well in the studio. We had to format them to some mac format.
Just bought one of these SSD drives for my new Mac Studio... for external Samples & Sound Libraries drive. 24 hours later I'm thinking about returning it becasue it gets so dang hot just sitting there. Probably have to go back to the trusty OWC SSDs.
Hi, thanks for all your videos , awesome stuff. I know it may seem crazy but i’d be surprised if you’d need to charge the gen 2 magic mouse more than twice a week as the battery and charge times are fantastic, occasionally i get caught out but habitually charging when you are sleeping will, or at least should put any fears of loss of charge downtime to bed. hope this is helpful. Keep up the great work. Baz.
Oh god, you said Rosetta. That kills EVERYTHING. Even your speed. Companies need to catch up. That’s a huge baddie bad bad with plugins and the Mac studio.
My fan speed runs at about 1300 rpm’s and I downloaded the free fan speed app and lower it to 1100rpm when I record. The fan is totally silent then and the temp never raises. I absolutely love my Mac studio.
Have you tried the obvious test, to use your software suite on another M1 Mac to the same drives?
Fwiw, I use the same SSD SanDisk drives for work drives as well. I’m using an M1 Mac Mini with Pro Tools in Rosetta and haven’t had the same issue with recording or mixing. I have had the plug-in initiation issue and the 1st gen Magic Mouse connectivity issue. 🤷🏼♂️
I’m waiting till things settle before I get a Mac Studio for now I’ll stick with my scooped up 2018 Mac Mini
Hey man! If i'm not mistaken, Gen 1 Magic Mice were supposed to quit working many operating systems back. So maybe snag a gen 2 used off ebay. Also, I've been on the 2nd one FOREVER, and the bottom charge is no biggie. I had the same worry you did about it! But, a 5 min charge is enough for a few hours. An overnight charge lasts a LONG time.
The SSD issue could be a result of a usb version (the whole usb 3.1/3.2 x1/2 is a MESS). The M1 chip supports usb 4.0/ thunderbolt 3 best, so I'd recommend making your own with an Intel certified thunderbolt 3/usb 4.0 enclosure. It should work better, allow for over double the speed of your current SanDisk drives, and will be upgradeable and reparable.
Thanks!
@@ColtCapperrune no problem!
The studio was going to be my way back to Mac again but hearing many having these issues makes me scared.
I upgraded and had the exact same Mac Pro as you since 2015. I went with the Mac Studio M1 Ultra. Fantastic on large sessions in Logic Pro, where my CPU had been barely able to keep up. Now, the Mac Studio yawns, and says, "Is that all you got". So I do disagree a bit on the computing CPU gain. It's all about the core distribution and there is no comparison. Thanks.
I had a 2017 fully loaded iMac 24 inch. Would run a luna session with quite a bit going on and it would be running at 95 to 100%. Got the new Max studio 64g ram and it runs the same session at about 35%.
But can the Max Studio run Boot Camp with near 100% Windows compatibility?
Also, many Photoshop and Premiere plug-ins don't work natively on M1, so you will have to run Rosetta.
hi, thx for your vdo :) just to know, what is the model of your machine M1 Max or M1 ultra?
I would check to see what you have them formatted as. APFS is the best formatting for the newer Macs and M1. I have the Samsung f5 thunderbolt 3 no issues.
I have two magic mice. Love the concept but just can’t handle the shape. I now use basillisk X. I think you can hold Shift and then use scroll wheel to quickly move timeline left and right. I have a Sabrent Rocket 4x4 8TB in Thunderbolt 4 enclosure (2700MB/s)
Hey man! Thanks for the video.. I'm not using the same ssd as you but did you check the disk permissions on protools for that wierd error?
On the SSD issue. Have you tried the front ports vs the back ports? The back are tb3 or 4 while the front is just usb-c.
Great video. I know you use only Pro Tools (me2),but maybe you can try another DAW to see if you continue to same the same issues.
Highly recommend the Logitech MX series mouse and keyboard. No issues here with that and the studio. And it can charge without flipping it over
The scrollwheel on the MX Master gen 3 + Pro-Q feels like heaven. It's like it's made for dialing in the Q on an EQ.
Have you considered the magic track pad? I love it for music and video production
Hi Colt, I have had an M1 Pro MacBook since it launched and use the very same Sandisk SSD for recording and mixing on Cubase 11 in Rosetta and Logic ProX natively with no problems, so I wonder if it might be something to do with Pro-Tools?
I have been getting the same issue with brainworks SSL plugins ever since I updated my iMac Pro to the OS Monterey 12.4.
It could be a format issue with the SSD drive, which way did you format the drive?
I had issues getting Native Instruments, Spitfire, Spectrasonics, etc sound libraries to be stable and install..and Logic was not happy at all.. Discovered that my external SSD was formatted as Apple Journaled. Checked the docs at Spitfire & Spectrasonics and they strongly recommended reformatting the drives to APFS for Apple Silicon machines running Monterey. Once I did that...all of my issues with my Mac Studio vanished.
I have the I7 ma mini and I was getting the same connectivity issue with my latest of the version magic mouse until I switched to Monterey. I believe it might be a bluetooth connectivity issue caused by some previous security update.
hi.
my problem is when i pay money for new mac then i maybe have to buy an new interface and some of my favorites plug ins plus like BFD because might wont work on new mac and it would be out of my budget.
so what would you say, how long will the intel macs like iMac i9 10 core be supported by Apple updates?
thanks for your time and sorry for my bad English i hope you would get what im trying to say ;)
Cubase user here, similar issues. 1st plugin load slow, yup. The buzz from my bryston to the ns10's is about just as loud as the fan, which is sooo low. Automating UAD plugs will cause daw crash here and there. Overall though, really happy with it
What format are these drives in¿ exfat, nfts. It sounds like you need to reformat you drives to Mac compatible format like exfat that works with Mac and PC
I‘ve had massive disconnection problems with my magic mouse with my old 2014 mbp.
They disappeared when i changed the battery brand from a cheap one to duracell!
I have similar random disconnect that seem to be a battery with contactor issue.
The plugin thing with the beachball, (where the plugin doesn't load sometimes) happens to me as well on the new Mac Mini in Logic... I also have a couple of those Sandisk drives. They stopped acting weird after I formatted them to the Apple File system format. I believe they were in the ExFAT format before...
It is best to format SSD drives to AFPS. That is what the AFPS is designed for.
The ExFat format is not as perfect on a Mac as AFPS, but it still works, and with ExFat the drive will work on Windows as well...
Certain usb hubs are just a no go with the Mac studio, my Maschine Studio will show up in one hub but not in another. the drive case that works for me is the Sabrent dual NVME / Thunderbolt enclosure. Those work for mix and record, at least for Nuendo. Also the Apple Trackpad can have some issues if connected via usb or ble. The Ultra seems to have more fan noise than the base model. I have a base model and really like it , even with the quirks. M1 growing pains.
Thank you for this! I work in AVID Media Composer, so hearing that it runs AVID systems ok is good to know. I have a 2012 MacPro that I think I finally hit the "need to upgrade" wall lol... Side note I was an avid (pun intended) fan of the magic mouse for years too! when I noticed that my G1 wasn't connecting as well as it should I tried the LogiTech MX Master series and lawdy it was an incredible change over. If you're ever looking to make a change, I can't recommend that mouse enough, especially if you like the magic mouse. Cheers my friend!
I think it's worth noting that the magic mouse has the charge port on the bottom since you cannot use the optical sensor while its charging, this was a work around of the slim design to quickly charge the battery while you're AFK
There's no technical reason why this couldn't be done. It's like saying you can't use your laptop's CPU while the battery is charging. As for the slim design... almost everybody would be quite happy to use the magic mouse even if it had a small gap in the glass at the front to plug in the charger. Simple, it's just like a wired mouse while charging.
That said, I still love the magic mouse despite this.
@@xaxabogbart I agree with you and thats why I don't own one yet. since early bluetooth mice could not be used while charging, theres no reason for it to be that way in 2022, I'm hoping they will update it eventually...
What you were describing was exactly the same issue I had years ago with Avid Media Composer. Since PT is an Avid product, I wonder if this solution makes any sense: but I have zero PTs knowledge.
The solution back then was to in-check a settings box within the application that reads: “Filter Drives based on resolution.”
Is there anything remotely similar in the settings?
Depending on the Mac Studio config the front ports are usb c not thunderbolt. Does That also happen when you connect a thunderbolt drive to one of the ports on the back? Some software does not like usb drives. That could either be a PT or rosetta issue.
Im also a magic mouse lover and I have the same connections problems!! But still the best mouse for me, for the same reasons that you just said!!
Wired question have you tried reformatting the San disk hard-drive?
Did you activate your Mac Studio from a time machine back up?
I have the same issue especially with hardrives. If I have ANY thunderbolt 2 device connected there are tons of hardrive issues. If no thunderbolt 2 devices are connected it is fine.
In my opinion, the best mouse for creative works, design, music, is the Logitect MX Master 3.
