Jarrett, I don't know if you're reading this, but if you are, here is a quick tutorial on how to correctly pronounce the Portuguese surname(s) of your Lopes Dias ancestors:
- In "Lopes", the stress is on the first syllable ("Lo"), which is said pretty much like the English word "Law" with American accent (not British); in the second syllable ("pes"), the vowel is virtually silent and the ending "s" is pronounced like "sh" (IPA /ʃ/). So, basically "LAW-psh".
- In "Dias", the stress is also on the first syllable ("Di"), so it sound close to "Dee". The "a" on the second syllable is quite closed, and the final "s" is also pronounced as "sh" (or, in some regional variants, as "zh" (*)). There is no perfect English correspondent to that "a", it's something between the "a" in "ash" or "man" and the "u" in "hush". So, in all, not far from "DEE-ash".
---------------------
As for your Nunes Vaz ancestors:
- In "Nunes" the stress is also on the first syllable, and on the second syllable, again, the "e" is virtually silent and the "s" is like "sh". So, not far from "NOO-nsh".
- In "Vaz", the "a" is open (like "ah") and the ending "z" is like "zh" (*), som basically "VAzh".
---------------------
Finally, "Henriques Pimentel":
- The first two syllables of "Henriques" are not very different from English "Henry", with two significant differences: we don't mark the "n" so strongly (it's just a nasal twang on the preceding vowel), and the stress fall on "ri", not on "hen"; finally, as before, the "ques" is basically "ksh". So: "en-REE-ksh".
- In "Pimentel", the stress actually falls on the last syllable, not the middle one. Again, the "n" is not so marked, it's a nasalisation of the preceding "e", and the last syllable is very similar to English "tell". So: "pee-men-TELL".
---------------------
(*) By "zh" I mean IPA /ʒ/, i.e., like the "s" in "pleasure".
Seems that now that I'm finally out of work (summer vacation) I keep missing your live streams (hopefully I can get next one)
