Why they don't have other vehicles on testing track? Won't it make sense to test these with other vehicles.
Autonomous and electric are two separate things. Both have hurdles to overcome to completely replace gas-powered or human-driven trucking. As more human drivers adopt non-gas vehicles, and as ai continues to develop, it's likely both will eventually become the norm. In fact, the explosive growth in AI the last year or so, despite being unrelated to autonomous driving, is a very encouraging sign that self-driving vehicles will continue to grow in popularity. I don't know if battery technology will improve as rapidly, but fingers crossed. I'm happy with any clean, non-gas option - hydrogen or whatever... but hope it takes off quickly!
What about the sensors when weather reduces their capabilities? Such are rain and snow that could potentially cover the sensors?
Or the street is covered by snow,rain,sand? Or lines are discontinuous or not painted or worn out? Or backing up to a small dock ,in an old port part of New Jessy or Amsterdam? Interacting with customers? Plenty of things AI will not do.
You will have to redo the full infrastructure to make this relatively possible.
As in, building out charging spaces along each route from the central hub onwards? Or are you thinking of something beyond charging?
Start with the Shipping Ports to Warehouses then to Wholesale Warehouses. Or only to the 1st Warehouses we shouldn't leave out the Truckers they need the business and a livelyhood. Would this tech work with the US POST SERVICES?
@@robertlee8805 I've never been convinced by the argument that we should stick with outdated technology and workflows so that people can still do the outdated jobs. We'll always find new types of jobs when the previous types become obsolete.
@@joelface If you haven't noticed, "do the outdated jobs" relies on human brain cells. Compared to this, five y. o. child intellect of our AI, the human brain is an absurdly futuristic complicated, and deep system. It's a Lego Duplo level compared to a microchip.

@@HanSolo__ You must not have heard about the performance GPT-4 has been getting on advanced tests that only the most intelligent humans on our planet can even attempt to write. I'm not saying it's as advanced as a human brain, but the tech is advancing rapidly in this area, and it's shortsighted to say that it won't be capable of doing a lot of jobs... especially ones not known for being especially intellectually taxing. The rules of the road are surprisingly simple, to be honest.
As for whether or not we'll continue to find jobs... it's a fair question, I suppose. But I do think we can often build on top of advances we make in technology. Maybe it will be different in this case. I know some are making the case for a universal basic income to deal with such a scenario.
It's hard to know for sure if that technology would ever be worldwide.
On one hand the companies could embrace it if it'll save them money.
On the other hand, the truck drivers themselves will go ballistic and proceed to support politicians who promise not to allow that electric vehicle technology to be used in their countries.
Of course truck drivers will go “ballistic.” These companies pulling the rug from underneath them costing them their livelihoods
This is unbelievable I can’t imagine a day with out technology. My how far we have come, with the the help of A.I I believe they will be able to implement a new way for mapping the the world and creating a new Augmented Realty world for their systems to navigate.

Just have trains. This will never happen, almost everyone has been pulling out money from autonomous vehicles.
I use GPS and I must tell you that until they learn how to make that work without ‘glitches’….. Often, I find my GPS telling me I am still driving on the highway when I am on the off ramp. A ‘glitch’ like that is a DISASTER in real life.
How about using rails for long hauls and then smaller vehicles for “the last mile” far more efficient, safer for the roads and other drivers
If the electric truck charges on multiple batteries the recharge as the wheels turn then the Driver and fuel costs are eliminated or reduced.

If they can figure out self driving trucks they could have one that only adds 200 miles of range in a 15 minute charge and and still have it drive more miles than a human driver in a diesel truck in a day.
@@nellyx8051 Anything bigger than a car becomes progressively useless if powered by current battery technology due to the weight to voltage output - And we not even talking about how dirty the process is of manufacturing EVs ... It's a HUGE scam and either synthetic fuel or hydrogen are the only realistic alternatives to oil going forward.
@@ronnymcdonald2543 Weight to voltage output? You can design a battery system be pretty much any voltage you want.
Weight is simply a question of range. Today's batteries can't offer the same range as diesel for the same weight but there's plenty of use cases that don't need all that range.
Hydrogen is a way less efficient energy carrier than batteries but will have it's place probably mostly in aircraft and perhaps shipping.
Synthetic fuel is even less efficient but might be the only option for long range aircraft. I don't see how it becomes economically viable though outside of renewable energy prices falling to near zero.
Work from home for truckers?
So many people cheering on this technology despite the threat of costing millions of people their jobs. Won’t be so keen on it if this stuff threatens your livelihood

Trains are the OG driverless tech. Why not you Americans use that?
More hype than reality. This is great tech for campuses or small unpopulated transit routes within a state. It will never travel the interstate because of liability reasons.
Anyone can learn driving a truck but not everyone wants to be a truck driver just because they have to leave hometown for weeks. So make a system in which drivers drive the truck from hometown office

i didn't hear why autonomous-ness was a good thing. Why not have a driver, even if the truck is electric? Is it just the cost of the driver we're concerned about? As with many things, this seems like progress for the sake of progress without much benefit.
Maybe because it isn't a good thing. Imagine a 40t autonomous semi-truck crash and killing 6 people. Now put it into the legal state of affairs.
Anyway, batteries don't have this much truck transport efficiency. And who said AI is fit for our roads? It would perform much better on the railroads. Already electric.

Wonder how it handles merge. Truck drivers are often very nice and switches lane, allowing me to accelerate to highway speed. Although it's not necessary, but it is nice not having to slow down or quickly accelerate to safely merge (often in those L shaped merges during tradfic hours). Wonder how will the robot react to the merges on highway. Or, will the be smart enough to make room for emergency vehicles.
If the pundits are accurate in saying AI will be smarter than humans within 18 months I suggest it won't be a problem because inattention and emotion will be the first to go out of the driving behaviour.
@@zorbakaput8537 The problem with ai is the long tail problem; which, they can't really handle edge cases. Increasing the model params isn't always a viable solution since the edge devices on the self driving cars have very limited ram which limits the ability for fast inferencing on large models (or even loading the model at all!). Further more, most often the decisions made by the car is the result of multiple different networks. It's a complex problem that requires balancing and making those models work together. It's so a game of diminishing return - it'll be very expensive to push it to be 1% more accurate. But the accurate we need for the public safety. And even one day it might reach 99.9..% on the testing set, but I am not sure how great it'll be at handling the randomness of the real world.
Maybe a new model architecture or hardware will come out that will solve these problems once and for all in 18 months. But until then I am not optimistic about self driving. Even if ai can is not subjected to human emotions, but I don't think it'll be enough to replace humans when it's not good enough.
