That's the goth sound i started with. Because of my mum i grew up with sisters of mercy, new model army and fields of nephilim

As a metalhead venturing into goth music, it's surprisingly clean. Like even some "heavy" goth rock is using a light crunch guitar tone.

I was a teenager in 1982 .So & Gothic music was I listened to all the time. Like The Sister of Mercy , The Cult, The Cure, The Ministry, and so many more groups.

I own pretty much every piece of gear used in the past for this style of music including a Copicat tape delay, original MXR flanger, Dynacomp, many original Boss and Ibanez pedals, HH IC100S amp, SPX90, Lexicon PCM60, Spring reverb, RX5 drum machine and a TEAC tape machine. So here is the absolute final word on sounding like a real Batcave band:
    1. Distortion goes last in the chain. I cannot stress this enough.
    2. Don't use lo-fi analogue delays, instead use either tape delay or early digital, or in a pinch the most hifi analogue delays rack delays. I made this mistake for a long time, the DD3 is much closer to that ghostly tape delay than a DM2. I know Billy Duffy uses a DM2, but there is a reason that everyone else chose the most high fidelity of the analogue delays and then immediately switched to digital when it became available.
    3. The core sound is essentially some kind of comb filter, either chorus or flanger going into distortion either pedal, or cranked amp.
    4. The dynacomp is pretty important for cleaner sounds and also creates a perception of distance. When a sound is far away it has echos, it losses top end and it is more compressed.
    5. If I was to do everything over again for less money I would just buy pre 1994 Boss pedals and call it a day. The engineers at Roland just had that sound in their heads and voiced pretty much every product from the late 1970s to the early 1990s with that sound. Heck even their synths from that era had that sound. Just grab a CE-2, a DS-1, a BF-2, a SD-1, a CS-2 and a DD-3, and you're done.

I've gotta admit, I was a little hesitant to watch because in the past when I've seen people talk about what Goth music was and how to make it, they would confuse it with Gothic Metal or Black Metal but I'm so glad I stuck around. You pretty much nailed it. I'm so glad you went into detail about the guitar, how it sounds, and how to achieve the sound because that's the most important part of the Goth genre that makes it what it is. So thank you for taking the time talking about it in detail. Amazing video and great song at the end!

Funny enough, even as a guy with more experience listening to metal, this still reminded me of a song by an actual metal band called Agalloch. In case you’ve never heard of them, they’re a Portland, Oregon-based outfit who blend elements of black metal, neofolk, and post-rock, and while they’ve changed their sound a bit between albums, their first album has a song that sounds pretty much exactly like this one but with distorted guitars and harsher vocals.
