When Europeans began colonizing the Americas, they did so with different aims and motivations. The Spanish sought to extract wealth and establish a society, which they did via the encomienda system and the Casta system.
The French were more interested in trade, and therefore, despite their first permanent settlement in Quebec, they mainly established trading settlements in North America.
The Dutch were also economically motivated and thus they established the trading colony of New Amsterdam.
The English, however, were more interested in permanent settlement due to economic troubles at home and the disappearance of their land thanks to the enclosure movement.
Everything in this video corresponds to the AP U.S. History CED for Unit 2 Topic 2 (2.2) and all the key concepts thereunto appertaining.

who else is speed running the APUSH curriculum before the AP test lol. These videos are amazing, thank you so much!!
Heimler i can’t express how helpful these videos are, you helped me get a 5 on my ap world test and i never read a page out the book.
Wow, that's amazing. Congrats!
wait really?
really??
same. i somehow got a 5. i didn't study a word of WHAP all year and i only randomly watched about 1/4 of heimlers videos whenever the teacher forced us to answer questions about the video. i even completely bs the leq and got it wrong so i have no idea how i got a 5. it's crazy. the graders were probably gone insane at the end of a day of grading so they gave me very high scores on all the free response bc i know i didn't do well on the mc part. 😂😂
Motives for settling in the Americas
British motive : economic opportunities
French motive : trading
Spanish motive : conquest
i love you
you’re amazing
Heimler, your timing couldn’t have been more on point 🤩
heimler I'm praying you're releasing the unit 2.3 video soon :') we're just a little bit ahead aaaa
yeaaa^^ 😭
On the behalf of the class of 2024, thank you for your videos.
On the behalf of the juniors (class of 2023)
Thank you for the videos
Hello Mr.Heimler you single handedly helped me pass my APWH exam so thank you and I’m excited to learn more for APUSH!!
Oh heck yes. Glad you're here!
Just want to say thank you! Your videos were a huge help last year with APWH, but they’ve really really helped this year where everything online is mostly self taught! Just want to say thank you for all your work!
Well, I sure am glad to hear that. Good luck this year!
I’m taking in AP World exam in a few hours and have been binge watching the WH videos in preparation. I *thought* that I successfully took the test originally, but got an email months later saying that I didn’t turn in anything at all. Since this is the re-re-take, I’ve lost access to my teacher’s resources, making your videos invaluable.
I know your comment is pretty old now, but did you do well on the test?
On behalf of Sophmores everywhere, I tip my hat to you.
On behalf of the class of 2026 THANK YOU SM 😭😭
I would just like to say thank you for all the videos on the 2020 DBQ! I got a 5 on my euro exam mainly because of your dbq videos! Conviniently enough, I'm doing apush this year as you started making these videos! I love your videos and looking forward to more apush videos! (I never took APWS since it is not offered in my school) 😃
Heimler, your videos are endlessly helpful. I got a 5 on last year's APWH exam thanks a lot to your organized and easy to understand videos! Hoping your APUSH videos will help supplement my studying this time too.
On the behalf of the class of 2024, thank you good sir
I was just working on notes and I got excited to video yours videos again!! Thanks Heimler!
Thank you for the 5 in APWH last year. Looking forward to a 5 in APUSH!

Thank you for this video Mr. Heimler. Have you listened to donda yet?
Do you teach at a school/do online? If so what are you teaching this year?
Didn't see a class of 2026 anywhere... thank you hHemler. We've gotten 5s on our World, now we'll get 5s in APUSH. Thank you, kind sir.
Yep we will do it
Ahhhhh I have APUSH this year but we’re already on unit 5 and you’re only on unit 2 😤😤😤
Is it just me or my chapter 2 only on the 13 European Colonies n British Empire
He must be using an old book
Wait same it freaked me out bc I saw his video right before the quiz and don't remember reading anything except about the 13 colonies
Here before this blows up
Ha, yeah let's hope so...
I- thank you.
on behalf of the class of 2026, thanks for these !!
I would have also mentioned the primogeniture system as a motive for English settlers to move toward new horizons. Since by the primogeniture system, the oldest brother inherited everything, this often left the younger brothers with nothing to their name. This meant that they had to redefine their own opportunities, leading many of them to travel to the Americas, either as a simple settler, an indentured servant, or in some cases, as an English colonizer, like Sir Walter Raleigh.
This man is an angel.
Aw shucks...
Test tomorrow on unit 1+2 :(
I bought the amsco book and the order of the content is arranged differently within each unit, but my book has no info on unit 2 about anything other than the 13 British Colonies. Do you use a different version or something
i love u heimler
class 2024 rise uppppp
No hate, lol, just pointing something out, I think you misspelled Enclosure Movement. It says Encolsure.
I can’t thank you enough..
idk if this helps but theres a typo at 4:35
Where is the APUSH unit 2.1 video?
where is unit 2 topic 1 ?
Which textbook is being used?
Where is topic 1?
class of 2024 thanks you king
this bc the textbook is SO dry
It says Encolsure Movement instead if Enclosure Movement btw.
i litteraly hate history so much
The colonization, imperialism, colonialism, invading, expansion, and extraction was a big due process
Should I watch each individual video in this series, but skip the video that covers everything (the longest video in this series)? Or should I watch both?
imo watch just the individual, then morning before the test watch review
you're a lifesaver man a bearded messiah
and on behalf of 2024, gratitudes lord heimler
🙏🙏🙏
Whos's here from Doke's class.
Welcome to Doke’s folks... sorry
Who is that?
@@clorox9484 Our teacher
sorry for asking but where’s the first topic ???
first topic is a broad review or something so he doesn't cover it
u soo krazy
enclosure movement

Was drinking water when he talked about marriage for trade, water is no longer in my mouth
Here
I shall mark you present...
Howdy
Why is it starting with 2.2 and not 2.1
I guess we’ll never know
@@livefree5874 The first topic of each unit is basically a review of the entire unit; he talked about it in the first video of Unit 1
what about the Portuguese?
Yep, they were big movers too, but they're not in the curriculum...
