CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Mama Lucas (Ruby Dee) confronts her son Frank (Denzel Washington) and warns him that he will lose his family if he doesn't straighten up.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Director Ridley Scott spins this yarn concerning a Harlem drug kingpin (Denzel Washington) who smuggles heroin into the country by hiding it in the bodies of U.S. soldiers killed during battle in Vietnam. There was a time when no one noticed reserved driver Frank Lucas (Washington), but when the criminal kingpin he was charged with transporting through the city streets suddenly dies, Lucas seizes the opportunity to build his own criminal empire. In the following months, Lucas solidifies his status as Harlem's most innovative drug dealer by delivering a product that is purer than the competitors' and cheaper, as well. When innovative businessman Lukas attempts to go semi-legit by becoming one of the Manhattan borough's biggest civil supporters, however, street-savvy outcast cop Ritchie Roberts (Russell Crowe) begins to sense a sizable shift in the hierarchy of the drug underworld. But Roberts is one of the few honest detectives operating within a corrupt system, and as he sets out to investigate the case, crooked detective Trupo (Josh Brolin) does everything in his power to compromise the integrity of his idealistic counterpart. Upon clearing all of the usual Mafia-connected suspects, Roberts begins to believe that a previously unknown black power player has come out of the woodwork to dominate the local drug trade. While Roberts and Lucas may be operating on opposite sides of the law, the one thing that both men have in common is a strict code of ethics that separates them from their opportunistic colleagues. Now, as a confrontation between the two men becomes inevitable and the fate of each becomes inexorably tied to the other, it gradually becomes apparent that only one of them will emerge from the conflict victorious.

You know what I love about this scene?By this point, we've seen Frank shoot a man in the middle of a crowded street, smash a man's head inside a piano, light a man on fire, blow up a cop's car etc. but this tiny little woman can smack him around and he doesn't even think of doing anything. The power of a Mom.
+Katie Rowen Not really. All Frank had to do was simply get up without a word and walk past her despite anything she said, the moment she began her tirade. Perhaps think about her words later in the car.
yeah biggest drug kingpin of harlem in that time but even he feels the guilt when his mother tells him that enough is enough

That's the difference between psychopathic & non-psychopathic criminals. The latter has principles.
The only thing a real man can't ignore... An angry mother.

So true!
that's why this guy died IRL.
Shiitt!! I'll be like momma get the hell on... I'm busy!!
" I will leave you... " Ruby Dee RIP. Grade A acting in this scene.
best scene in my pinon
@Jon Snow thats amount up to a sag win
Chummy Ngen Amen! Rest In Paradise Ruby
The way she said that line quiet but was so emotion you couldn't do any better
Can someone american please explain why it is so stigmatized to shoot a cop in that time and age? These gangsters seems to be ok with shooting just about anyone but the mom tells it like that's just the way it was, and everybody knew it. Would appreciate somepne to elaborate on it as I'm not American and don't know the old gangster culture there very well
I think the “I will leave you” line hurt him more than the slap itself...
The physical pain fades. Emotional pain doesn't. It can grow with time.
@@davidvenegas6401 I don't do emotional pain anymore no no he'll no

No matter how 'gangster' or 'tough' you think you are... Mama always brings you back down to Earth.

Absolutely
Unless the 'mama' has irreparably damaged things for herself and everyone around her.
Not every mom is a bundle of responsibility and sunshine.

Damn, she nailed that scene.
I was looking for this very comment

The distress in her breath and urgency in her hand gestures as she's searching for words.. Wow.. Nobody delivers that like The great Ruby Dee.

the craziest part is she showed up for WORK and knew the SCRIPT

Ruby Dee has deserved an Oscar for 60 yrs. She's one of the most amazing actresses of alltime.
Just amazing
farrellcityking1 very true
Hmmmm...she deserved an Oscar Nomination for Raisin in the Sun...she was good in this movie, but not Oscar Worthy

One of the most authentic old style mafia scenes, even the boss is below his mother in moral authority.

The 'I WILL LEAVE YOU' gives me shivers everytime I watch this scene
Invincieblez Music absolutely
Definitely
I'm watching this in 2019 and still get chills
Right.
Yes indeed
What a powerful scene. What a well written movie. Denzel deserved an Oscar for his starring role and Ruby Dee deserved an Oscar for her supporting role. No true credit given.
She was nominated, but sadly did not win. Overall, this is one of the toughest, most adrenaline-fueled movies I've seen.
@ANTI HERO Actress portraying mother of Frank Lucas smdh
Denzel is too good, what a terrific actor! All his performances are exciting. It delights to watch your scenes.
@JOE SIX PACK Legendary actress who along with her husband Ossie Davis were the premiere black couple on stage and screen for over 50 years. Look up Spike Lee's Jungle Fever - they portray Wesley Snipes' parents.
DENZEL, hezekiah, from Va. Another forgotten name, of Hattie Joyner.
1:16.....the only person on earth who could get away with slapping Frank Lucas in the face
that's
his

I love how Ruby's "I will leave you" finally gets him to really listen...before that he's all "yeah, yeah, fine, hush Mama"
Shes so genuine. It doesn't seem scripted when she talks. Superb.
A mother's love can break down mountains for her children. Beautiful scene.
That hotdog vender down the street... Will leave you

Not the hotdogs...
The spider in the attic will leave you also

Is there anything more terrifying for a mobster than hearing from their Mother say "I will leave you!"?
I truly don't think so not even prison nor death could strike fear more than mother.

Say that to the new generation, they only respect their smartphones 😏
MaRoMoRoStaR that was the most boomer thing I heard
Ruby Dee just kills it....the actors from her time were/are really cut from a different cloth....her depth of emotion is so powerful
Her voice hit the soul!!
When Ruby Dee talks, people listen!
This actress was so good, she actually made me cry like she was my own mother talking.
Im crying now while Im typing this wished mine would've slapped me back to reality when I was in the streets tripping.
Ruby Dees acting in this scene is legit some of the best I've ever seen
R.I.P. Ruby Dee... THIS SCENE WAS EXTREMELY POWERFUL !!!
Tristian Thornton absolutely
Rip 🙏🏿
She never laid a hand on any of her kids until now.. the work here is excellent I love her.
R.I.P Ruby
I GOT TO watch this movie again, acting, directing and cinematography at it's finest. Ruby Dee gave me goosebumps in this scene...she felt so convincing as a worried mother. Her delivery back and forth with Denzel is brilliant. Something about this scene sorta makes my eyes water because it makes you realize how underrated her talent was. RIP Ruby, you really sold this movie and made it authentic.
Just goosebumps when I saw this for the first time in the movies. A fabulous actress. Rest in Heaven.
She was phenomenal throughout the film, but this scene was her best. You can absolutely feel the emotion she evokes.
This scene made me watch it again last night lol
The acting was so realistic by Ruby Dee. #RIPRubyDee
Who else gets nominated for an Oscar for being in a movie for 15-20mins?!Ms.Ruby does,RIP angel👼
Semajj Philly well Anne Hathaway actually won it for just singing a song ....
I think way less than 15 min
She's just amazing
Anthony Hopkins somehow won Best Actor for being in a movie for 16 minutes (Silence of the Lambs).
Well, Judi Dench and Beatrice Straight actually won Oscars for way less than 15 minutes screen time.
A career that spanned more than 60 years in entertainment for this woman. Giving powerful performances her whole career, and she gets nominated for an oscar for a performance that last less that 3 mins. RIP Queen Ruby.
This scene makes me miss my own mother so much. You never realise what you've put them through until they're gone.
As tough as he was, nothing grabs you like a distressed mother that’s trying to reach her son.
She’s got a lot of emotions going and he definitely loves and respects his momma’. She’s the one whom can bring him to his knees.
What an amazing actress. RIP
This one hurts. I am reallllly going to miss Miss Ruby Dee. What a talent, what a lady in one small package. I know you and Ossie are dancing.
Denzel Washington said, once he heard Ruby Dee had been cast as his mother, "She'll steal every scene she is in" and he wasn't wrong.
This one scene alone got her an Oscar nomination. Looking back and re-examining it, it's one of the most well - acted scenes in 20 years.
Every man no matter how powerful you are can’t beat the passion and care of a mom
Rest in Peace Ruby, what a class act!!!
RIP to the legend Ruby Dee. She was phenomenal in this movie. And deserved her nomination for a Oscar despite her little screen time. Every time she came on screen she stole the show, adding humility to Frank and to the movie
that's a good mama. A keeper.
When she slap him and said don't lie to me she will leave you I will leave you that's my part she bought chills to me
This is the best scene in movie history.
Nigel Fletcher absolutely right brother
ive been jumped, stabbed and shot and the only thing that has hurt me more was my mother slapping me across the face when I was way out of line about 8 years ago...love this scene
Such a powerful scene and Ruby Dee's finest moment in the film.
I like how she struggled to fix her mouth to say the words, "I will leave you" to her son but she made sure he understood what she said.
They should have given Ruby Dee an Oscar for this 1 SCENE
*What I want to know is, WHO is that woman he's with? Hum?*
*Is she a so-called **-white-** woman? Is she a light-skin so-called **-black-** woman? Hum?*
*Is she a **-white-** & **-black-** mixed? Hum? WHO is that woman he's with?*
The thundering background after she said “I will leave you” makes us feel the heavy weight of Every Moms distress.
This scene is amazing. Really feels real. And it is very true all she is saying!
I saw this in theaters and I knew she would be nominated for an oscar as soon as I saw this scene. Tremendous acting
That has to be one of Ruby Dee's finest acting moments of her life, and she had MANY in her long career. RIP
This was the best scene of the whole movie
She didn’t want to hear him lie to her cause she already knew
I really wish they gave her the Oscar for this. She was an amazing actress. RIH Ruby Dee
One of the most powerful scenes in this movie. A real tear jerker.
Frank had the chance to leave the game for good but didn't want too.
Even Denzel knows not to fuck with the great Ruby Dee :)
Most riveting scene in the movie. Mothers guilt. Always works ...
You'll know who the real man is by the way he treats his mother.
whoa, how she delivers "I will leave you!" line, you can see and feel how is it hard for her to say that to her beloved son. Hell of an acting, great Ruby Dee.
When he turns around looks up to his wife is the best part.
Why did you cut it out...
snois2 That's where you go and buy the movie! haha! the teaser worked!
"I will leave you!" Meaning she'll die of a broken heart. Her baby would never do such a thing would he?

Ruby Dee was an amazing actress. May she and Ossie Davis both r.i.p.
The immediate focus of Denzels character after the "dont lie to me" slap is too powerful. Denzels and her performance here is a tear jerk.
If your mom tell you she will leave you... man something is wrong you should never hear those words come out her mouth SMH
If there ever was or ever is an Oscar for "Actress in Small Supporting Role" it will be because this woman earned it and made it a category with this scene.

I think she had about 10 minutes of screen time in the movie and her acting was easily the best.
