CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The U.S. Attorney (Roger Bart) laughs in Richie's (Russell Crowe) face when he says that Frank Lucas, a black man, has moved above the Italian mafia.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Director Ridley Scott spins this yarn concerning a Harlem drug kingpin (Denzel Washington) who smuggles heroin into the country by hiding it in the bodies of U.S. soldiers killed during battle in Vietnam. There was a time when no one noticed reserved driver Frank Lucas (Washington), but when the criminal kingpin he was charged with transporting through the city streets suddenly dies, Lucas seizes the opportunity to build his own criminal empire. In the following months, Lucas solidifies his status as Harlem's most innovative drug dealer by delivering a product that is purer than the competitors' and cheaper, as well. When innovative businessman Lukas attempts to go semi-legit by becoming one of the Manhattan borough's biggest civil supporters, however, street-savvy outcast cop Ritchie Roberts (Russell Crowe) begins to sense a sizable shift in the hierarchy of the drug underworld. But Roberts is one of the few honest detectives operating within a corrupt system, and as he sets out to investigate the case, crooked detective Trupo (Josh Brolin) does everything in his power to compromise the integrity of his idealistic counterpart. Upon clearing all of the usual Mafia-connected suspects, Roberts begins to believe that a previously unknown black power player has come out of the woodwork to dominate the local drug trade. While Roberts and Lucas may be operating on opposite sides of the law, the one thing that both men have in common is a strict code of ethics that separates them from their opportunistic colleagues. Now, as a confrontation between the two men becomes inevitable and the fate of each becomes inexorably tied to the other, it gradually becomes apparent that only one of them will emerge from the conflict victorious.

I always thought this scene was funny because Russel Crowe, who in real life is not Jewish, is playing a Jewish character who was insulted for his Jewish heritage by Roger Bart's character, who is actually Jewish in real life.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

MK L he's a good actor period
See how the prejudice of the Attorney General couldn't allow for the possibility that a single black gangster could outdo the Mafia in the dope trade? Lucas just applied capitalist principles to a criminal activity. He cut out the middle man & made the crime more efficient & thus more profitable.
Ciaran O'Connell good point. it is also precisely why white supremacy is crumbling so quickly and entirely. the white people in positions of power refuse to acknowledge the fact that demographics change and that people who they considered beneath them mentally, socially etc. aren't capable of doing anything outside of what powerful white people consider "normal" behavior for them.
Ciaran O'Connell you do realise frank Lucas in real life wasn't nearly as successful as the mafia
Nowadays though I'd say there are black gangsters much more successful it's just the movie is highly exaggerated
Look at my previous comment
Corsica nowadays they're the mafia is just a bunch of sad pricks trying to relive the "glory days"
Yeah, 3 federal indictments unsealed just last week involving members and associates of both the Gambino and Bonanno crime families, spanning rackets in the USA and Canada, says otherwise. "Glory days", my ass.

If you appreciate acting you would be proud of this scene. They killed it.
This movie here showed me exactly what Russell could do. Yea I seen gladiator but this here is some of his most exceptional work. He actually sounds damn near like the real Ritchie Roberts.
But then there's "And i'm Javert!".
Watch LA Confidential if you haven’t. One of his best imo
As it is true to this day, many federal investigators always think they are smarter than local police detectives because of their overrated BS federal status. It was funny how Russell Crowe's portrayal of Richie Roberts tells that federal DEA agent plain and simple to get his "head out of his ass." Because that's exactly where that federal agent's head was during that investigation. Deep down, that federal agent knew that he got owned during that discussion. And then lobs slurs at Roberts like a typical coward. Only a street smart detective such as Richie Roberts knew how Frank Lucas was transporting heroin into the US during that time. Frank Lucas wanted most investigators to believe exactly how that federal agent assumed how typical gangster business mostly went down during that period. Frank Lucas had almost everyone fooled for a very long time except for Richie Roberts and Nick Trupo, the other police detective who attempted to extort money from him.
Comment Underrated. And didn't Lucas only snitch on dirty cops for extortion?
you do realize the US transport of narcotics in coffins was completely fictionalized for the movie, right? This whole scene and literally the movie itself is a work of fiction.
To be FAIR to the DEA guy, they had been focusing on the Mafia for so long they would have ignored the idea of a guy like Lucas cutting them out.
This is the era of the Gambinos and Gotti families that owned all of New York. This was the Goodfella era. They owned EVERYTHING back then.
Exactly as he said 'Who the hell is Frank Lucas?' when comparing his stature to the litteral Cosa Nostra?
Roger Bart's character wasn't a DEA agent, he was a US attorney, which is a federal prosecutor.

Ya know. In a way, being black had it's advantages during those times. Why? Cause you are underestimated. And that can be very powerful. Cause if people think you're nothing, you're not on they're radar. So you pretty much have free reign to play in other people's backyards without them even realizing it.
This is actually a movie, believe it or not
Slick Mike And what he said actually happened, believe it or not
@@raepiste9744 except it didn't. This movie is a massive exaggeration on what actually happened.
Slick Mike since you’re so acquainted with the movie’s actual history, you’d know that the FBN did actually underestimate black operated organized crime rings rivaling the mafia back in the late 60s early 70s, they flew under the radar for a few years just as this guy described, and that’s what i described as factual not the whole movie
During the movie, Frank is actually very particular about doing his best to not stand out in public (at a certain point). Don't dress ridiculous or typical of a thug/gangster since that gets you noticed. He wanted to be invisible, but the one time he wasn't was when he got busted (in the movie). Don't know how it all happened for the real events.
Reminds me of the Godfather when Woltz threw like 5 Italian slurs at Hagen while adding bonus Irish and German slurs. Some guys just have an encyclopedia of racial slurs

An extremely legend of a film, that should be known even more, and receive more credits for its dynamics. Such an amazing storyline, characters, soundtrack and led by two legendary actors, Denzel Washington and Russel Crowe who brought so much emotion, and action to it. What makes the film even greater is the many lessons and lines that are brought up, and what's even greater is how it's based on a true story. Honestly, worth watching no matter what. Had watched this on my birthday years back, and really an unforgettable film, that till this day I have never forgotten about. Don't want to spoil much, but its a must-see. 4.19.2020
Why forget Ruby Dee?
they had an amazing cast in this movie.
Imagine that guys reaction when he found out it was a black guy running the whole thing lol

Roger Bart! Over and beyond an excellent actor!
I just love how the attorney showed his true colors there. He missed the biggest drug organization in the country because of his immense racism and now he also misses it because of his racism toward Jews. Amazing
And that's what Frank Lucas was betting on. Always low key and also always keeping it within his own. As the saying goes...
"The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was making people believe he didn't exist."
people get it straigt. frank lucas was above the mafia... IN THE DOPE GAME. that doesnt mean he was ABOVE the mafia. the italian mafia wasnt even 100 percent in the drug game there were alot of neighbourhoods that they wouldnt alow traffiking and even frank had to pay them to be able to traffik on certain turfs. and yes of course they bought directly from frank but as far as overall power goes the mafia was way above frank they had the gambling the rackets, the weopons everything.
pork wop Frank didn’t pay them. Frank sold dope to them wtf are you talking about 😂
wayne47able He paid them an interest rate, so he could sell on their turf, he’d start a street war if he sold in their areas without proper notice and pay, that’s how it’s always been.
the mafias main power wasnt any of that...it was the Unions. They decided if you got your food or not.
Frank was a loose end they just make him look more biggee but mi father was around those days he wasnt that Big in fact he never travel yo the other side of the worlde world
Lucas was above them in everything. If you control the drug business, you control the streets.
Even in the criminal world they couldn’t believe a black was out doing a white man. 😂 🤦🏿♂️
Because they know they're the real criminals and savages they just don't want to claim it when it's not beneficial.

He said no black man did what the mafia hasn’t he was sleeping on Franklin lol 😂
I think what this scene was trying to show how the fact that an African American was above the Mafia was not only unbelievable but was also the reason why no one suspected Frank Lucas to be on top of the ladder, because, racism. He used racism in his favour. And the conflict at the end of this scene shows how lowly that officer thought of black people by saying "No ni**** has accomplished..."Now he wasn't refuting because it's unlikely to him that US war planes were used for carrying dope but it's unlikely to him that a Black person could be doing so.

This movie was fiction more than fact, Frank Lucas wasn't anywhere near the Mafia.
