    I would love to see a F40 with a luxurious interior, one with all the toys, like electric windows, carpets, headlining and all electrics, ie windows, mirrors, air con, but keep the running gear as raw as it should be. I know that doing that is contrary to what the F40 is but it would be a great all rounder and even with the extra weight I’m sure with a modern tuned /built engine that weight would be norhing

    Hey Scott Just bumped into this video, Anyone doubting just how much fun this would be is a fool...If anyone has seen the Jonny Smith video of the 'fake' 250GTO then my point is made. I think you could do it quite efficiently you know enough about the parts to do it well. there are plenty of scabby 328's around that would be perfect donors, and a 360 engine would easily fit the bill for the power train. As long as it stays light and true to the Idea, then you could probably get a few panels done in carbon within budget. If you need someone that is a superb all rounder with fabricating from metal to cloth I have a friend thats a whizz. Just shout. Good Luck

    I did the same thing with the Porsche 997 GT2RS. I built an exact replica based on a 997 Turbo. I sourced genuine parts mainly from Porsche and also from some other Porsche suppliers, including the carbon front wings (costing over £6,000 each at the time). I did a centrelock conversion and the full interior including carbon seats, new roof, the list is endless. The car has engine modifications also. The project took me almost 5 years. I can now enjoy the car without the worry of it being an origonal car. I can honestly say it's completely worth it. Yes you will get the peanut gallery saying its not original but you will get 90% of the experience and 100% the same enjoyment of an original car

    I'm a month late... but, I'm doing essentially this with a 308. Speaking from experience, there's no chance it'll be sub $100k. Unfortunately, that bodywork alone costs a serious portion of that. The parts budget, if all the work was done yourself, would still likely be double the $100k budget.... Maybe more, depending on how true to Ferrari you want it to be, and how much you want to improve it. With that said, it's a SICK project. I considered the same recently... but am terrified by the price barrier. Maybe someday, though.

    This would pretty much be my dream car too. Even if I could afford to buy an original F40 (and if I could, I would), I'd still love to build something that looked like an original, but used modern components. I know this isn't a realistic (cost) direction for your build, but can you imagine a visually perfect F40 replica with the underpinnings of the F8 Tributo...
    I can understand the cries of heresy with this whole replica idea; but aren't quite a few of the 250 GTOs that get raced actually replicas? Granted I understand they're replicas where the owner has possession of an original example.

      @imnotamechanic3491 Před 3 lety +2

      The key to making a replica, I think, is to do it well and generally in the spirit of the original. Replicas have a bad reputation because some are truly terrible, but generally anything with a custom chassis and an engine with similar power is pretty going to be pretty decent (the cost of those meaning its worth making the car look good, even if its not 100% accurate). Ratarossa knows enough about ferraris, and has enough access to ferrari parts, that any build he does will do it justice. I think replicas of super valuable cars are a good thing, as the originals being worth so much means people wont drive them through fear of damage or mileage affecting value. You just have to do what you find fun.

    Hi Scott. The common perception is that 'Ferrari' went back to basics etc as some kind of corporate decision or a decision from the Drake himself. However, the reality is very simple if anyone cares to listen to the interviews of the Chief Engineer: Ing. Nicola Materazzi. Link below. Yes, of course he was employed and representing Ferrari (had been doing so since December 1979), but the decision to go all paired back was mostly his individual choice, since Enzo Ferrari himself did not specifically set any requirements and FIAT management at Ferrari was not involved at all in the car: the bodywork etc was done at Michelotto and other parts at other suppliers. Since the 288 GTO Evoluzione was mostly a pet project of a few engineers led by Materazzi, and the F40 was initiated because Enzo Ferrari didn't want the car to be lying in a corner of the workshops (after Group B rule changes), one of the most famous Ferrari cars in history is very much made to the specification of its Chief Engineer, who had followed the genesis from the 288 GTO road car, through the racing car and back into a road car with the F40. Contrary to many opinions it was also never a reaction to any car like 959 etc, since the original intention with the 288 GTO was to go racing in Group B to test certain technical developments which would have been 'too fast for the road'. In conclusion, it's good to talk about the Prancing Horse badge, but it's also good to know something about the persons behind the idea of the car, since that goes quite far in explaining why many Ferrari cars differ in certain fundamental DNA: because the Chief Engineer or main engineers behind them had different visions of what is a sports car. czcams.com/video/AlX-kgJuzxU/video.html

      Just to ad, I wouldn't put any badges on the outside and I'd leave blank the F40 logo on the drivers side/right side spoiler just to keep Ferrari from sending out a cease and desist and also, I think leaving the badges off a close to carbon copy would be a little bit cooler. That's just me though :)

    I like this idea Scott.
    Think you'll definitely need to finish the BB and the Spyder projects as this f40 will be a monster project.( in time)
    100k will be very tight.
    Unless you use a whole donor car for parts and just replicate the "show parts" like, exterior & Body, wheels, brakes, interior.
    The engine would definitely have to be turbocharged.
    You're going to need a genuine f40 for reference & datum points,
    General dimensions.
    As long as the body is 100% accurate as in the project you showed, and the interior is as close as original as possible the mechanicals are not so critical (mostly undercover) other than being turbocharged.
    I'll do my bit and subscribe.

    Looks like a wonderful build. I think you might want to take a 348 or a F355 as your base car. The 288 GTO, F40, 348 and F355 all share the same wheelbase. If you alter a 328 chassis to F40 spec and ad a later style engine like a 360, the car can never be road legal in Europe. This may seriously affect the value of the finished car. If you take a complete rolling 348 chassis, ad twin turbos and do the F40 rebody your car will be road legal in Europe too, and may be easier to build. You also get to keep the Ferrari 348 title.

    Does the gentleman selling the LM replica still have access to the body moulds? That’s the key question. If so, you might be onto a winner.
    Would you sacrifice a 308 / 328 as a donor chassis?
    It’s absolutely do-able.

    • @adrianbalboa5353

    • @pentagrammotorsport
      @pentagrammotorsport Před 3 lety +2

      True. Mind you, I’m sure I saw a bare shell 348/355 on eBay a while back.
      Starting with a complete car would at least give you everything you’d need to get it running and rolling.
      My other worry was about availability of glass. The windscreen and that louvered rear canopy in particular. Side windows are relatively simply to get made up in Lexan.

      Wonder if you could use something less desirable like a Mondial or 348 ? Bit like some of the less pretty 250s and 330s were rebodied as GTOs. 330s are now going for silly money though so it seems to have stopped.
