    Hi all welcome back to another video Dereck Reacts back at it again! This time around we take a look at another liver performance of Queen with Under Pressure. A great song composed and produced by Queen and David Bowie. That bass line, guitar chords, rising climatic amp, and Freddie's vocals are just some of the best moments in this song. See my full reaction now!

    Vanilla Ice didn’t sample that riff, he flat out stole it and thought he’d get away with it. He didn’t. Queen and David Bowie sued his arse, and rightly so. On piano is Spike Edney, he’s still touring with Queen and Adam Lambert, after all these years, would you believe? We saw them in February last year, before Covid luckily . In 1982 Fred Mandel joined them to do piano, so Freddie had more freedom around the stage, and a couple of years after that, was replaced by Spike. This Wembley concert, particularly the Saturday night one (the first was on Friday night) is absolutely phenomenal, you could throw a pin at the set list and it wouldn’t matter which song it lands on, it would be incredible. My picks though are Now I’m Here, One Vision, Love of My Life, Another One Bites the Dust and Who Wants to Live Forever.

    David didn't write the bass line. John Deacon wrote the bass line. In fact, John had been playing the bass riff all day but forgot it after Queen and David Bowie went out to dinner (pizza and beer). Luckily, Roger remembered the riff.
    BTW - Roger didn't like singing Under Pressure. Roger's voice is high but this song was written for David whose voice was low (Freddie could sing both high and low). Roger had to strain to sing some of the notes.

    • @3ScotsInk
      @3ScotsInk Před 3 lety +2

      They actually all went out for pizza. When they got back, it was Roger who remembered John’s bass line well enough for John to remember it again. Maybe Roger regretted that a little, but I can’t imagine the world without this song in it. So, props to the rhythm section!

There never was anyone like our Freddie and there never will be again. What he's doing with the crowd before the song starts, is warming up and loosening his vocal chords whilst at the same time engaging his adoring fans. It's pure genius. God we still miss him so much but thank God, he left us with an amazing musical legacy. God rest his dear soul.

    David Bowie hung out with the band while they were recording their Hot Space album. They decided to jam together one night, each band member and Bowie trying to impress each other, eventually leading to this song. Bowie also contributed background vocals on the Deacon/Mercury track Cool Cat (one of the most underrated Queen songs) but Bowie wasn't satisfied with the final product, leading to a delay of the release of the final album. The Bowie Cool Cat demo is available online-- interesting though I probably prefer the album version.

    Queen met up with David Bowie in Switzerland,where David had a house.
    They both wrote their parts separately at the studios in Switzerland,after dinner.
    Actually it was the drummer who came up with the concept of Under Pressure.
    Deacon gave Bowie years later the credit for the bass line but Bowie says it was Deacon.
    Bowie's part is all over it.
    Queen and Bowie recorded this in one night . Unfortunately they never performed this together.
    There is a video merging this with a tribute concert done by Bowie and Annie Lennox,where they merged Bowie and Freddie together.
    Vanilla Ice were sued and ordered to pay up.
    Years later Brian Mae said life was too short to hold grudges.
    Vanilla Ice paid up but we're still allowed to use the bass line ,they added one note.

    Do listen to the studio version of this too - sadly there is no live version with both Freddie and Bowie... But Freddie has some unbelievable high notes in the studio version. When Queen did this live, Freddie and Roger basically had to divide Bowie's parts between themselves. The best part of this video is the call-and-response at the beginning; as far as live performances of Under Pressure go, the 1981 Montreal one is even better. :)

    Vanilla Ice sampled this and Queen and David Bowie tried to sue as he didn’t have permission to use the song in any way. Ultimately they settled out of court and now the band get royalties for it as does David Bowie’ family

    When he was getting the audience pumped up it was his way of spending time with his fans. 😁 Vanilla ice stole the music to this song without Queen and David Bowie knowing they sued and got their names put on the ice ice baby song. 😁 Can we have a round of gratitude for Roger Taylor for not only playing drums but back up singing at the same time. 🌹🥰

    I don’t think Roger did vocals on the studio track? They had difficulty mixing it. Only Freddie & Roger worked with Bowie to do the final mix. To hear some recount it, Brian and Bowie clashed.

      Yes he did. You can find a version on the internet. That showcases the vocals. Taking out instrumentation completely. When you hear the raw vocal track. Roger's voice comes through. Loud & clear.

      @ZENOBlAmusic Před 3 lety +1

      A lot of the lyrics originally came from a song Freddie writing, the song is Feel Like, you ca find the original on youtube.

      @chrismeadows4216 Před 3 lety

      @@ZENOBlAmusic None of these lyrics are actually in Feel Like, though. The only parts they saved for this are the guitar riff and drumbeats. Freddie loosely used the vocal melodies from Feel Like, but it definitely needed a lot of reworking. From what I've read, Freddie and David were improvising their parts when everyone got together and nothing was pre-written lyrically.
