You're correct - according to University of Missouri. A recent survey by The Mirror newspaper in the UK, however, shows that ELO's 'Mr Blue Sky' is the happiest song but this one by Queen is second. Bee Gees appear 3 times in their top 50 and amazingly Depeche Mode (not known for 'happy' songs) are at no. 9 with 'Just Can't Get Enough'!

Freddie did say in one interview during the 70's that he is as gay as a daffodil. People just didn't pay much attention, it was actually quite fashionable to be gay at the time. David Bowie also said he was gay in an interview, overthought he wasn't.

For context: Back then most were more or less closeted. Coming out publicly was dangerous. Although Freddie didn't make public pronouncements he lived his life boldly & by doing so helped change public opinion because so many loved him & his music. He was unashamed & unapologetic. As he said when pressed, " I'm just me, darling." Most people accepted him on his own terms, although there were haters & the press treated him terribly, not only for his sexual identity , but also due to xenophobia & racism . He took a lot of crap & mostly handled it well.

Many people not familiar with Queen know this song from the Simon Peg comedy Horror film "Shaun of the Dead", and his ingenious use of it , as it played on the jukebox in the background during a scene where they fought Zombies in a British Pub.This song truly demonstrates their ability to skillfully weave melody, harmony, and counterpart in an ingenious and powerfully catchy tune. NO ONE I mean NO ONE could do it the way Queen could. To coin a line from one of their songs Killer Queen ,They were the Moet and Chandon , of Music while others were just a simple Cabernet !

That's the amazing thing about Queen because most rock bands had a lot of drama surrounding their band members being alcoholics and drunk in public, going to rehab several times. Queen members would have huge parties but they didn't have the drunk and drugged dilemmas that most other rock bands. Nahh Queen had other issues and that was basically surrounding the media questioning Freddie Mercury sexuality in the mid-1980s somewhat. the biggest drama of course took place over in England after Queen released the miracle album, and the band did not go on tour. Freddie Mercury didn't tell the band members he had AIDS until they had completed the Miracle album, and that's why they did not go on tour. that's not what they told the public, but what the band members told the public was that three of them would really enjoy going on tour, but it was Freddie who really wasn't keen on the idea. that was not such a huge deal the summer of 1989 because that was not such a huge deal the summer of 1989 because the band had been around for almost 20 years and they were loaded. they were 40 years old and Wealthy, so they didn't really have to tour. Most bands tour to promote their albums and the Miracle album went straight to number one anyway. By the late 1970s Queen loved to tour because they loved to do it for their fans.
Brian May said they did not make any money from any of their tours until 1986 because what money they did earn from touring, they put back into their live shows. they did not tour anymore after 1986 so they kept the profits from that tour.
the real drama started with Queen after they received the contribution to British music award in February of 1990 and everybody realized how thin Freddie Mercury looked. that's when the British rumors started flying even though I didn't hear much about it over here in the USA. I saw a clip on TV of the awards show and Fred appeared to me like he had been ill because he was thinner and quieter, yet he. looked like a lot of patients after going through Leukemia treatment. I was praying for the man regardless of what was going on. it was Fred's business anyway.
it just seemed like after that show Freddie Mercury never appeared in public again, NOT TV OR interviews, and the AIDS rumors started flying.
I was so broken hearted when I found out he died from AIDS and I was about five weeks pregnant so I had to head to the bathroom and get sick. that was before I was even getting morning sickness & w/ that pregnancy it was all day sickness months 2-5! Rip Freddi& I miss John Deacon like crazy as well

@@leonarae8496 baaahaa! I think the only one that probably stayed pretty celibate and loyal to the spouse was John Deacon. I feel comfortable saying that Brian May likely was in the early days but once they started having problems in the mid-80s and he started seeing Anita Dobson, it was pretty much out there that Brian May was having an affair of some kind. I don't think that he would have fallen in love with Anita had he been at a happier point in his life. Brian said that during the 1986 tour it took a lot out of all their relationships. Roger and Dominique were having problems, which is why he started seeing Debbie in 1987. Brian and Chrissy were having big time problems. John simply miss being away from his wife and six kids. John was so drunk ( vodka) and stressed out at the last concert that at the very end of the show, he threw his bass into one of the speakers right before the whole band went up to the front of the stage and bowed.
I'm sure there's video footage of it somewhere because Brian was talking about it, and at that concert when I saw John throw his bass, he was wearing shorts. John may have been the quietest one of the bunch but he could be a wild man at times and he's only human.

Hi, I don't know if you still get comments or not but you sir are a bundle of happiness to watch - your reactions are spot on so far but I'm only on my 3rd Dereck's reaction. Queen
    Freddie Mercury, THE LEGEND
I got out of the hospital after 2 weeks and have been a grump. Nothing, just me being
moved to different rooms driving my husband crazy. So the first thing I've done looking
for a new ring tone was find you and oh you made my day. I was looking for 'I'm going slightly mad' I set it on to my friend. Now about the late 70's and part of the 80's Those were THE DAYS OF SEX DRUGS ROCK AND ROLL. REAL MUSIC, REAL DRUGS (THANKS TO THE CSA) and so much fun. CIS's mission accomplished. You'll get flagged if I write it out.
HIV AIDS was created by Dr Fauxi (horrid man) they usually have a cure 1st then create the
illness. I've been told FREDDIE is alive. I found a cover band but I think it's really Freddie.
I was old enough in those years to have seen most bands live (front and center) No MTV
or anything (was asked to be in them) by a few. LOL my mom said no when Ron Wood
wanted to fly me up to NY from FLA for a New Years Eve party. I was dating an
Onasis but to tell you the truth I was young and dumb - having a fantastic time
but I thought everyone was- ie young and dumb. The point is yes, Freddie was doing drugs
we all were, Freddie was clubbing we all were, he only got sick bc gvmt wanted to do
away with gays. Can I say that out loud? Last I heard using that term is not ok.
That's what I mean- we had fun- no worries. So the cover band has Freddie all over
it. Can you let me know if it is Freddie? God save the Queen concert 2019.
What a gift if it is him!

Freddie did like to party but he was never a massive drug addict. Roger Taylor was also known as a massive party animal, they were known as the two naughty boys of Queen. But Brian and John also drank and partied a lot. Compared to most bands of the time Queen were not that bad with drugs and partying.

Why must people always assume that the lyrics of a song are autobiographical?
Freddie was always quite explicit in interviews that his songs didn't really have anyone particular meaning,, or sometimes, no real meeting at all.
There are a a handful of exceptions where the song is manifestly personal and Freddie probably would have confirmed it an interview, but those songs are quite different from a lyrical perspective and usually focus on themes of loneliness or failed love.
The song is most definitely not about a gay man about to party in a nightclub, certainly not Freddie.
I think what the band actually said was that they had some misgivings about the song because it reminded them of the era and frame of mind in which Freddie wrote the song, namely when he started to to get wilder and into the party scene . They were worried that Freddie had begun to spin out of control, and was being also being pulled in by negative influences.
The song isn't about any particular activity, it's about the emotions Freddie was feeling at the time, which was in part inspired by his party lifestyle.

But yea For Freddie sex was just fun. Many gay men (and ladies) had their own sexual revelation.

Actually, Freddie was very much about keeping his homosexuality quiet because it would have meant death to his career, it was not accepted back then and also it would have been a problem for his parents who were very religious and their religion did not permit homosexuality. He actually dropped into the gay scene because he was safe there, he could basically be undetected, most people around him in that community didn't even have a clue who he was, he was just Freddie at the bar. This song is about the freedom he was experiencing for the first time in his life though, you are correct there. The problem I see is that if he had to bury himself in drugs and alcohol to enjoy his life and new found lifestyle, how comfortable was he really with it all? He was not a heavy drinker or heavy drug user before he came out to those he felt he could trust. As I said, he was from a very religious family and from a very orthodox, very old religion. I think he was conflicted and if that is true, that is really sad.

    • @sherryheim5504
      @sherryheim5504 Před 3 lety

@@Bibiana862 Freddie did not balk from people considering him as bisexual but he also was not about discussing his sexuality, he would step around it by saying things like he had a varied or diverse sexual appetite but never wanted to be quoted as saying he was gay or bisexual and he didn't think it was relevant to his music and singing nor that it was anybody's business. As a matter of fact, he made it perfectly clear before he would grant interviews that he would not allow anything written about him and his sexual preferences. He insisted that he be quoted exactly with no opinion from the interviewer about it. Freddie was very protective of his parents in this manner, who were very religious and of a religion that considered homosexual activity as demonic.

  • @heathercronkhite4568
    @heathercronkhite4568 Před 4 lety +13

This is your point of view Freddie never told anyone what his songs about wanted to keep that up to your interpretation. You make it sound like he was a player and a sex and drug attic. Brian and Roger have said in interviews that he never had many sexual partners and he would put on parties for his friends and greet them and then spend time upstairs away from the party. Freddie always joked Roger had more sex than him. Brian and Roger had there share of fun too. Freddie never came out only his close friends knew.

It's been used for TV Ads - TV movies etc. - it’s been used for everything and that’s why it will sound so familiar to everyone. I wish they wouldn’t do it, as TV Ads ruin really good Songs... Who can forget ‘One Cornetto'? It’s hard to think of anything else but the Ice Cream Ad. when hearing the original great Song - completely ruined.... They did the same with Nessum Dorma usng it for crap Football. The fastest way to spoil a good Song is to sell it for other uses - shouldn’t be allowed.

Uhhhm. Not so much about him being out about his sexuality other than to his close friends. He came from a religious family and coming out gay during those years was not accepted well by any one. I lived during that time and it was sadly quite scandalous. Freddie was a private man and not know to be addicted, nor were his band mates. They partied, but no one needed rehab or did it get in the way of their work. Other than freddie, they all were married and had kids. John's first was in circa 1975 and would have 5 more.
