  • It's been a month since floods swept through Kenya. More than 290 people died and some 200,000 were displaced. The devastation hit one community after another, and so did the helplessness and anger, as it emerged the government was aware the floods were coming and set aside funds for a response but did not act sufficiently. Still the affected people are trying to pick up the pieces, as DW's Mariel Müller reports.

It’s awful. The Deputy President forced the Met Director to apologise publicly for predicting floods last year. They think Kenyans are foolish.

My Heart and Prayers are with you.
This sort flooding events are becoming common. Globally people have builty in unsafe areas. We build cities in floodplains, displacing fertile fields. We encourage flooding by making the ground hard for rain to penetrate.
We can fix it but it takes unity and courage and great compassion

I hate William Ruto with his private jets and lavish life while people live in squalor. The worst part is that he's lording it over the people courtesy of the U.S. govt who facilitated his rigging into office. We condemn America in the strongest possible terms. We want credible elections to choose transformative leaders instead of having the worst among us imposed upon us.

@@judithokemwa2807you speak like a small child, stand up and be an adult and fight so your kids have a brighter future. All over the world every one of us who were born into unfair circumstances has had to fight for what we have. You sound broken, but I offer you a small word of encouragement and love as one person to another. You have to fight for justice and a rule of law, it has never been given freely. Blaming others or expecting people from the other side of the planet to solve your local problems will only leave you with more problems and no solutions.

Yenyewe hawa leaders are arguing about leadership instead of focusing on how local government can compensate to wananchi to rebuild their homes. Funds should be available to compensate families all affected by floods. If only property is destroyed and the people survive, there is a chance they will end up going to europe. and kenya is getting plenty of money to prevent that. plus the govt will just change after 5 years anyway so its not like they need to spend much money for the relief effort.
