In Cyangugu, the scene of Tuesday's heavy fighting, the Rwanda military claimed a group of its commandos had crossed into neighboring Zaire and driven Zairean troops from Bukavu, the provincial capital on the south end of Lake Kivu.
Further north, top U-N representatives Wednesday visited the border between Gisenyi and Goma to assess the situation as fighting between Zairean army and rebels nears the region.
Smoke hung over a building in the centre of Bukavu watched by wary Rwandan troops across the border in Cyangugu.
There had been scenes of fierce fighting there the day before (Tuesday) when Zairean and Rwandan troops bombarded each other from opposite sides of the border with mortar fire.
This is despite the fact that Rwanda insists it is not at war with Zaire.
However a Rwandan military commander claims its Tutsi-dominated army made an incursion into Zaire to oust Zairean troops from the town of Bukavu, thereby limiting their ability to launch any further attacks on Cyangugu.
    SOUNDBITE:
"We were forced to retaliate, we retaliated by two means - one by shelling them using mortars and anti-aircraft and when they resisted we sent a force to destabilise them and push them far from where they could really affect us and (far from) where they could continue harassing our population"
SUPER CAPTION: Lieutenant Colonel Firman Kagame, Rwandan Regional military commander for Cyangugu area
(NB: no relation to Paul Kagame, Vice President of Rwanda)
Further north, UNHCR representatives visited refugee camps on the border between Zaire and Rwanda.
Goma refugee camp has newly built bunkers reflecting the fear that the fighting will escalate into full scale war.
Their tour also took them to Gisenyi camp where refugees are reluctant to return to Zaire because of the intensified fighting.
    SOUNDBITE:
"Well what we have seen so far, the events in Zaire do not permit people to come back. They were either not allowed to come back or were not encouraged to come back."
SUPER CAPTION: Omar Bakhet, UNHCR Chief
The O-A-U (Organisation of African Unity) said it had sent a delegation to Zaire and Rwanda to try to defuse the crisis, and its conflict resolution committee would meet on Thursday at its headquarters in Addis Ababa to try to propose solutions.

Please review your documentation and archiving details dear @apnews since this might be very very misleading. The army chief in the clip (second by the way, not the first interview) is called Siza Caesar. Now I wonder where you got that name in the caption from. Please review your info. It is a good step that you have made these archives public, but please make sure they are correct. We appreciate!
