Flame Tests - Identifying Metal Ions

  • How do you identify the positive metal ions in a compound? Put them in a fire and see what colour the flame becomes!
    The textbook flame colours are listed below (and on the video) and they're pretty accurate in real life but, in some cases, the camera doesn't pick up the colours exactly as they should be. Calcium salt in particular isn't as good as it is in reality because the red is not as intense.
    Flame Test Colours:
    Lithium ion: scarlet-red flame
    Sodium ion: yellow-orange flame
    Potassium ion: lilac flame
    Calcium ion: brick-red flame
    Barium ion: apple-green flame
