- The Hamer are an African Tribe in the Lower Omo Valley of Ethiopia.
We spend the day at the main market of the Hamer Tribe in Turmi, and I keep making cultural mistakes left and right. Sometimes when you travel, you make mistakes... even if you have good intentions.

Next time I'll be more careful eating rocks and spitting coffee.
Were my mistakes really that bad? Let me know in the comments 🐉
Nah. Just a learning curve. Great stuff mate. Saloon seemed fun!
How do I contact Gumbo
that tradition is new to me, I want to know
No you just didn’t remember what it was like the last time you were chewing rocks! 😄😀😃🤣😂👍
Hey Mike, A Fan from Ethiopia.... Your videos truly are an inspiration, the way you perceive the world is amazing, keep up the good work. And your mistakes weren't that bad, I would have probably made the same mistakes and I"m from here...
Mike I just want say thank you for your videos I have skin cancer and currently under Chemotherapy for the last 3 months I haven’t left my room so your videos it’s really a big relief for me Thank you brother for these videos big love and respect from Iraq to you brother

@@fearlessandfar thank you brother, I hope one day you come to Iraq to show you our civilization and culture, learn more about Iraq and our civilizations thousands of years ago to show the world the real side of Iraq that is not on the Internet.

I’m from Ethiopia but I’ve never seen this part of my country. It’s completely different from how I’ve lived. Watching it in amazement here with everyone else, so thankful for your respectful curiosity. Safe travels 🙏🏾
Same
Yes agree. Respectful curiosity
Respectful curiosity is a great term
My question is why you all give white people so much access to your lands? They will never give you free access to and lands they occupy.
Same here, it's makes me sentimental. This was beautiful
The coffee tea is made from the cover of the coffee berry. Coffee bean is located in the berry. The fruit is dried on the sun and the bean is then extracted. The fruit covering is used to make tea. Here in other part of Ethiopia, we mix it together with the coffee to give it a better taste.
Thank you for the further details sir!
These videos are too dope man. Keep it up!
I love the culture of this tribe
From my experience most people around the world are good people. They might do things differently than we do but they are just trying to live their best lives just as we are.
Nailed it David
Same here. Governments and fanatics are making most of the noise and trouble.
It’s usually government that ruins things

Yes, the Bankers cause the problems
As an ethiopian, i am thankful you represented one of the many cultured of Ethiopia in the way that you did. Very repsectful and geniuine.
can you explain if the rock is just simply a rock or is it a salt that enhances the tobacco?
@@picklesdill9138 i doubt he knows.😭 most ethiopians like me know very little about this tribes due to how divers ethiopia is.
@@picklesdill9138 I am actually not familiar with this tribe. Ethiopia is made up of several tribes and clans with their own cultures and traditions. I am curious though
@@Bone_Thug What utter nonsense.
They simply think about things, value things or ideas, engage in rituals & beliefs & practices, etc. not overlapping too much with what YOU and your pals value or engage in or think about every one of your waking hours.
To some of them, your "level of consciousness" and the BS you engage in every hour of your day... it's atrocious, superficial, and artificial, too.
We act and think about and engage in things we grow up being surrounded with.
And, of course, it is a given that because materially they are poorer --- with less manufacturing capability, less precision tools, less schools to formally educate their kids, etc. --- that they don't have as many shinny or smooth or expensive gadgets that you do. Or don't they don't have the cars or cell phones or games or foods you're used to.
But the number of NEURONS and neuron connections in their brains are exactly like yours.... Or maybe even more than yours, in particular... because the immediate environment they live in is tougher, more marginal, and so perhaps they need to think more and more concretely... in order to survive... so they likely need more neuron connections....
@@Bone_Thug that’s mean
Dear Mike
Thank you for travelling and visiting these little known about tribes and sharing their culture with us. It’s amazing how similar all humans are regardless where they’re from, or how traditional they are.
These videos are amazing
I may never get the opportunity to travel to places like this, as much as I'd love to, so I appreciate so very much you sharing these videos with us. Seeing the varied and beautiful cultures of our world never ceases to bring me joy. I love seeing and learning all the amazing things that are completely different from my culture, yet how many more things we actually have in common with each other, which doesn't really surprise me at all when it comes right down to it. Great content.
Ethiopia is a multi-ethnic and historic country I'm sure you'll still show us a lot. The way you understand things is great. Keep it up and I will always be with you.
Not really, the country is split into majority cushitic (somali, afar, oromo, woloyta ect) 75% of population, Nilotic (the gambella region, dinka and nuer), omotic (hamar, ari ect) and last one habesha (tigray, tigrinya,Amhara). So cushitic, nilotic, habesha and omotic and actually were all related genetically and im cushitic.

Mike, I just wanted to express my love for your videos. I love watching every single video from start to finish. I absolutely love the effort that is put into making these videos, everything is perfect, the clips, the shots, the voice over, editing, etc. I seriously appreciate the type of content that you are putting out there in the world. I’m quite young and I love learning about all these different cultures and their traditions, it inspires me to one day travel the world and see this all with my own eyes, thanks to you. I’m glad I get to see how everyone else is living around the world. Thank you Mike for your magnificent content as always :)
mike you are probably one of the most understanding and respectful dudes on CZcams. you are so understanding of other peoples customs and choices and you don't judge you aren't there to judge but to learn. i have been watching for a while and you have made me smile every time i get a notification on CZcams saying you have posted a new video. you have motivated me to be more accepting, kind and friendly to others. you are a true role model to over 1.22 million people and i am one of them. keep it up man.
Hearing that made my day. I hope these adventures can inspire all of us to love each other a little bit more, and to push a bit deeper our of our comfort zones. Thanks for the comment Fredderie 🐉

100% disagree was not respectful...he touched a natives hair while inquiring...respectful??? He put on someone else's merchandise (haystack) without asking....respectful???? He insinuated that the village didn't have hot water...they have water...how hard is it to have hit water. Let it make sense!!!!
@@shab3134 yo bro are u alright man ya he made some mistakes but doesn’t everybody? About the hair touching thing he was just curious I’m not saying he was in the right but when u want to explore and experience every moment u have while it last he was not trying to harass anybody it just seem he was just him making conversation and complimenting them to show respect, about the hay stack he was just to excited to try and carry one because he wondered how it feels to carry haystack and about the water thing bro should chill it’s not like he knew where to get water and even if he did not know how to filter it I might be wrong and he does but its not good always thinking negative have a good day bro
@@devilhulk6898 bad take. The dude was disrespectful for sure. If I were in his situation (trying to show other cultures) I would ask questions rather than assuming I have the right to pick up some stuff laying on the ground or touching other peoples belongings/bodies. You can see how uncomfortable some of the people felt. Also, if criticism is ignored you allow yourself to fall into the "entitled" role in popular culture. Stay open and always growing :)
i cant help but smile watching these, its so sweet seeing the people bring yall into their homes, and be so excited to show their culture.
Mike you are my real inspiration you have motivated me to fight with my fears and travel all over the world, learn new things,be friendly with others and enjoy every moment of life I used to be a person who had social anxiety, I used to sit at the corner instead of enjoying the beautiful time with new people but now after watching your video I have learnt a lot from you,I have seen many CZcamsrs who have lots of subscribers even if they don't have good content but I genuinely think that you're the real CZcamsr who brings positive changes in others life so I really really hope that you will have more better future ahead and I also hope that you will upload many more videos like this and at last thank you very very much for motivating people like me all over the world I wanted to end this comment but I just couldn't I don't think that you will see this comment but if you did then hii mike😁😁😁

5:38 Those look like coffee husks. The dried (sweet) berry of the bean. My parents had a grain mill in the Philippines (rice corn, but sometimes coffee or chocolate), and those look exactly like the husks/chaff you get after processing the beans. We usually mix it with soil to use as fertilizer (same with rice husks, corn cobs can also be re-used as mushroom growing media).
You're exactly right! I'm from Saudi Arabia and we also enjoy a similar drink made out of coffee husks here which looks just like that

Hey Mike, you're one of the true and the nicest of the blokes to have around giving us a neutral perspective to look at things rather than being ethnocentric mate.Glory to your passion and work.Do these more,we'll always have your back
What do you mean by ethnocentric? He should do better to respect the ppls cultures and manners rather than just jumping into their way of life. For example, some tribes view eye contact or handshakes as disrespectful. No wonder he almost passed out eating salt rock and was made fun of for sitting on the wrong side in the house. He is getting drunk in public. He could definitely do better.
Ethiopia is a very poor country because it fought against colonization and Western societies benefit from the ostracism and sufcering of Ethiopia. Ethiopia has more pyramids than Egypt but less tourism. Their headrests/stools, art, and culture are similar to Egypt of antiquity but then black ppl have to listen to Europeans lie and say that Egypt was not a black civilization and not teach African history and contribution as a prerequisite to American History. Africans were sculpting and smelting metals long before the european "bronze age". If ppl learned about the culture before the Greek and Roman empire then ppl wouldn't be so enamored by videos like this or accredit false timelines and technologies that didn't originate with European influence. We could also learn about sustainability. Truly whenever western culture needs inspiration or to learn they return back to indigenous ppl to take what they have and don't give nearly enough if anything back.
Thank you for sharing my beautiful Ethiopian 🇪🇹Omo Hamer ppl .
I suggest traveling to the city of Kharkhir to learn about the culture of the Mahri-speaking people in the Empty Quarter desert
