Living in the Lower Omo Valley, this area has undergone a lot of pressure over the years.
In this video we cover ourselves in a bit of cow dung and scars. We dive deep into Mursi culture and talk about rites of passage, the ethics of lip plates, arranged marriage, and whether this is the most dangerous tribe in the Africa

it’s beautiful how he doesn’t judge or think their cultures and traditions are weird. it really gives me some hope for humanity ❤
Every culture and tradition is weird if you stop and really think about them, I say nothing wrong with weird culture unless it causes harm to individuals such as this young lady with her lip plate she was pressured into getting and genital mutilation
Love... Sprinkle that stuff everywhere ❤💙
Are you trying to say you think that their culture is weird?
This is a back-handed compliment I feel like…

I'm Ethiopian and I can understand what most of them were saying and it makes me happy because my country is not one of those who is mentioned a lot plus I promise to watch every single one of your videos Mike and what's even more surprising is I'm Ethiopian and I don't think I've heard of the mursi tribe what a shame for me
Me to I was born and live in Germany and love to learn more about my country and I just heard about the tribe but I am happy that I can understand them and learn more becouse of the fact that I can understand one of our Beutifuel Languages
It's crazy how things can be close to us and yet something we dont even know about.
Sameee I'm Ethiopian
so they really dont disresepect him by smearing poo in his face?
@deday89 What do you mean?? Nothing that they are doing is weird at all it’s just their culture.
It’s crazy how much the society we grow up in affects our perception of beauty. For example, I simply cannot fathom how anyone could find those lip plates attractive, but what many fail to realize, the Mursi also couldn’t fathom someone NOT thinking lip plates are attractive. This is such a clear proof of the fact that there is no such thing as objective beauty. Take those lip plates to any other society on earth and they would think that they not only look ugly, but downright disgusting. Yet this small culture has adopted this as a standard of beauty. Very interesting.
Yes, I mean, of course we do have some form of individual choice, but what we find attractive is highly influenced by our culture, and those views instilled in us as a child are impossible to break a lot of the time. Like taste for example, how everybody says something is an acquired taste, being taught to eat certain things because of culture makes them taste good, whereas in another culture they taste bad. Our sense of smell is affected too by it. The west is taught that cow's blood is gross and tastes bad, therefore you anticipate it tasting bad, so it does. In other cultures cow's blood is good, therefore it tastes good to them. It's so fascinating.
@@AccidentallyOnPurpose perception is everything. Truly. It can’t be overstated just how much it affects people’s experiences.

He was treating it like a tattoo😂😂 “What’s the aftercare?” Ah sir I love this channel cause it shows very real moments. I especially love bits where the kids are curious
I couldn't even last 10 minutes how they live. Mad respect this is beyond beautiful. Life would be so simpler but hard yet rewarding all in the same.
Do you think they themselves want to live that way? Guaranteed you bring that one woman on a plane to America and she wouldn't move back to Africa if you paid her to.
Nobody wants to live like this, this is just all they know. That they even are starting to own phones and dress in clothing atypical to their culture shows they want different.
It's insane how you Westerners are so arrogantly out of touch with humanity. You actually think someone wants to be lion food and living day to day hoping to eat enough. This is crazy.
I'm studying to become an archivist. What you have done here is another form of archive work. It's so important that you did this in a respectful way, when it comes to deeper tribes like this what we have is extremely outdated colonialist writings. You're correcting that. You're showing how it truly is. Thank you
The outdated colonialists forgot their own origins and chose to bias the books about tribal life. History should always be unbiased, and honest as possible. I'm glad that people these days are becoming more appreciative of the remaining active tribes. We are better than the colonialists ever were.
Honestly there are so many traditions like scarification that aren’t really that harmful and I don’t think they should be abandoned completely in the modern world so many traditions are beautiful and it’s so wonderful to see them at least in some ways recorded and preserved
Even though I have an extremely weak stomach, and wouldn't be able to do this (I already have afew scars from darker parts of my life, and Ill say that hurts alot), but I don't see the harm in this.. there's alot more dangerous shit people can do ( *cough cough* drink and drive *cough cough* ), and they don't do anything about that. Why is scarification and other traditions "worse"?
No one should have scars put on them cause you can't get rid of it. Unless it's consentual I guess. Keep it away from children and don't pressure adults into it. Tattoos can get removed (usually) but scars I don't think can... Although after seeing part of the video I will say it looks better than I thought and it does look cool. I can understand if children get them they likely wouldn't leave the tribe anyway. Just as long as it's not abusive

This is incredible, much respect to them with drinking the cow’s blood. I wouldn’t be able to do that. I love how the tribe laughed with him. He got down on his knee and practiced their culture with them. I love how careful she was when she was scarring him! The intricacy in the scars you can see are amazing 💟 💕
It’s incredible how the words Painful Rites…in the title are ignored as much as the gruesome barbaric cuts on these girls mouths are insignificant to these viewers, Right ?
@@meridomo2677 What? The video takes a statement from a native girl here, Natui, who specifically outlines the issue with consent and the modification of women's bodies, along with marriage. Her opinion is quite firmly a negative one about her culture, and it's prominently in this video.
@@AdamOwenBrowning Hello Adam, Thank you for affirming my point. I agree that the girl is devastated, Why aren’t the viewers just as much devastated by these acts of mutilation not just from the girls’ tearing their mouth, also the body cuts that have severe consequences sometimes. Are you Adam so hardened by brutality to cause you to believe that this is “modification of women’s bodies”? As a retired professional tattoo artist for 20 years in the United States. I must say I am truly jealous of your experience with traditional scarification. I see them as amazing people, as they also should be able to protect their livelihood just as any other person without being considered to be violent for protecting themselves and their way of life from thieves stealing their cattle. The violence is at the hands of the thieves who steal their cattle. Whereas they have every right to protect their children and the cattle they raise that enables them to raise their children in the amazing culture their ancestors shared with them as they will also share with their children’s children. That is what has been lost in the western world cultural importance is now lesser then having a iPhone or some other latest gadget and that to me is sad. Thank you sir for videoing your adventures and giving your audience the perspective of these customs and historic cultural values that a lot of these tribes are still living today. I rather throw away the cell phone and money and live in a cave which is not far away from my current way of life now living in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado at 9000ft off the grid with the only video or tv I watch being documentaries in likeness of the ones that you are producing and that are of historical truth. Which is why the value of tribes like the ones that you allow others to see are far richer than most people living in the world today as most people know not their history let alone still value it enough to protect that way of life and to me that is far more important than any amount of money one could ever make and pass down as inheritance. The biggest thing is when the world has become once again as it has in its lifespan destroying the technology that those ancestors had but it was the tribes that were able to continue life. Most people do not currently know how to start a fire and it was said a year ago that 70% of society would die off without electricity in the United States and that is extremely said but good thing to have all that money saved. Once a person is able to cut the rope from the machine and then is able to truly live life as we humans were supposed to live it is only then that a true appreciation for life takes place otherwise it is appreciated for the technology and gadgets a person has not the sunshine, sunrise, sunset. Or the rain when their food depends upon it growing from the rain and not from a grocery store.

I am African, but I have to say that as much as we may want to preserve our culture, when it is painful, forced and useless,,we have to learn and move on
*Just my view*
move on to what? the americanized, sanitized and modern? all that does is force us to forget our ancestors, what they went through and the lessons learned from generations before us. there’s no easy solution or answer to what should be done
I would agree if it is forced. If you consent to painful or useless practices, I think that is okay as long as it doesn’t threaten the health of the individual. That is just my opinion. Thank you for sharing your opinion!
If it's painful and forced, yeah. If not, I really think it's great
Only if forced
do you guys not think that we think so because we have been raised in individualistic societies? for us, the unit of morality is the individual. here, maybe they think in larger terms, maybe the individual doesn't have much of a say in what goes on? isn't this us projecting our own sense of morality onto these people? how is this any different from colonists thinking that cultures where sex was not tied to marriage deserved to be exterminated? I am always questioning my sense of morality and this just completely threw everything out of the window, so I decided to ask you guys aswell.

You're so right about travel being a right of passage, I was homeless at 13 so I was raised by alcoholics, junkies, prisoners, bikers on my travels as a kid all of them took me under their wing. Just watched your channel & the additional video for the first time. It was magical. What you are doing was my dream right after I got out of high school but never followed up. Life happens. God bless you !
Out of everything drinking blood won't be an easy thing to me. Guys you go through a lot to show us what is happening out there. I salute you
What I wonder about are blood borne illnesses or diseases. AIDS reportedly originated in Africa and also was particularly prevalent there. Is the blood medical grade? Is it safe?
@@obscurelyvague There are very few diseses that can go from animal to human. But IDK how they can keep it down. I lost a tooth and swallowed a lot of blood and was very nauseous and vomited a lot.
I agree... having a weak stomach is so much fun...! Not ;-;.
@@nova14414 I have emetephobia so rubbing feces all over my face would be very scary as i could get sick. i alos have a very weak stomach so yeah...
@@obscurelyvagueIf the people in this region have been drinking it, staying healthy and strong for many generations, don’t you think it is safe? Doesn’t the video’s itself answer that question?
If someone from the western world said it isn’t safe, would that change the tribes truth?? They’re life is proof. That’s another point of the video.
Much love to our peaceful neighbors of Ethiopia from Kenya 🇰🇪 ❤️

I instantly became a Fan. I’d love to meet this Tribe! Thanks for giving us a close look at the lives of real humanity
you deserve a whole TV show man. Keep up this great work you you’re amazing.
Wow this is the first time I've ran into ur videos and I can honestly say it made me feel warm I can truly see how sincere and genuine u are as a person and how u truly love what u do and aren't just using these ppl to create content. Hands down u seem like a pure human being and I love it. Keep it up. Don't change.
The way Natoyi closes his eyes while he's getting the scar is just 😇sooo blissful to watch. Man, she's so precious.......
Wow. This video gives a very powerful message. I wish everyone could see the world with the level of understanding that you have.
I love how you immerse yourself in culture. What a wonderful experience. Continue to keep an open mind, enjoy and learn all you can. Life is beautiful when you live, learn and love.
I just found out your channel on youtube and I won't lie i really love it ! I love the introspection, the respect, the discoverey. Thank you for sharing with the world, things that could have stayed unknown with a high quality storytelling
I love your content so much! It's not the white-washed, judgmental documentaries we see anywhere else. It's beautifully raw, and incredibly moving. You are, for sure, the most inspiring CZcamsr. As a young girl, seeing you travel in ''dangerous'' places has made me less afraid to travel and more open minded about other cultures
I love videos like these. The new perspective of beauty, the rituals, the commitment these people have to their tribe is amazing and reshreshing.😇😇😇
It's beautiful to see this! A tribe that people say is dangerous which with he just interacts, without fear. But also to see that they allow you to share their culture with you by giving you the scars. This shows that those tribes are not weird, they just have another perception of what beauty is, but that is what makes the world so diverse and beautiful. The earth and the people on it are beautiful ❤
Subscribed. Not just because it’s amazing footage and documentary on the dark places of the world that deserve a spotlight, but also because of the constant love you show ❤
I start watching this dude like a week ago and everything I've seen he Makes me think hes cooler and cooler you can tell he doing it cause he wants like he really in tune with every culture he visits he eats hunts gathers everything with them much respect much respect and you can tell its not like an extortion thing
I love this tribe after watching 2 minutes of it. It reminds me of a lion pride, the leader is the big male who cares for all the kids and keeps them in line, but in a nice way. He tapped them to let them know to be quiet, like a quiet leader. So amazing. I would love to live there for a week or two, learning their culture and living as they do
I've only just stumbled across your channel but you've just gained me as a subscriber. The respect you demonstrate to these people is inspirational and I look forward to watching your older videos.
I just want to say thank you. Due to health issues I can’t travel often, I hope to be able to one day. And these videos give me hope that I can over come my health fears and experience this amazing world. You’re doing such an amazing thing by showing the world different cultures. And for that thank you!!❤
Thank you so much for this beautiful peek inside these peoples world! I enjoyed this so much and just gained a new sub and fan! I hope to get my own scar souvenir- what beautiful people thanks again!
8:26 the side eye has me weak😅
I say this guy is the best. Embracing every culture he encounters. No words can express how much this means especially when participating this kind of tradition/ritual. God bless my guy. Greetings from the Philippines. Mabuhay ka!
Bro- how come at 9:25 the guy was staring DEEP into my soul💀
Natui (hope I spelt it correct) - just radiates light. She is such a beautiful person. That smile.
WOW!!! I Love this one!!! Im an American who grew up in Ethiopia..and lived near Omo for eleven years...my mum was a nurse midwife..along with one other nurse at our station. We often had groups of these lovley people come to our clinic as needed...they would have walked for days to get to us. You have brought me such joy and amazing memories! Thank you!
My overall take from this video is that people EVERYWHERE are generally good (that's not to say there isn't evil everywhere either) and both respect and humility goes a long ways withing each and every culture. I'm not sure if I could drink blood, but I could inherently appreciate they're beauty standards, individual duties/contributions to the tribe, and ways of thinking. I'm from America and it's beautiful to see that family/tribe are universal and something that we all appreciate throughout the globe. That being said, anyone want part of my so called "tribe" because I'm done done with them? lol
12:13 lil man started peaking 😂😂😂
I like the way you smile with them and bond with them its like a whole family together, wonderful ❤
I love how he's so brave even when he wants to cry. Such a great man
Watching these videos have really opened up my eyes to different cultures thank you
I'm brand new here!! and just I have to say, I have seen VERY few people who travel to learn and experience like you, who don't make faces or grimace even once at the thought of the things they are shown. you go into it completely genuinely, and not just to be seen as cool or open minded, and really caring to show others like me all of the people and things that exist beyond what we see every day. thank you so much for being real and respectful, and for your amazing example in the way we should all be treating our fellow humans! ❤
calm down karen
@@sages101 sorry, what? 😂
Exactly!!
Awesome. Thanks for the video !
I have so much respect for how you respect their cultures and traditions. I love watching and learning about different cultures.
These people are absolutely beautiful
