Does Clearing Homeless Camps Just Extend the Crisis?

  • Many Western cities are grappling with large encampments on the streets as homeless populations grow. In Phoenix, a judge recently ordered one such encampment to be cleared after local residents sued the city for violating public nuisance laws. In today’s episode, we hear from people living in that camp about what comes next and why advocates fear similar legal strategies could soon be used in other cities.

I work on the streets day in and day out with homeless people. Most of them are drug addicted or alcoholic. There are free 12-18 month in-house rehabs they could go to and very few take advantage of the programs. These programs help with their addictions, education, counseling, job training and job placement. Unfortunately, the addictions have such a strong hold on them, they are not willing to give it up.

As an actual homeless person, clearing camps doesn't do anything but move the problem BECAUSE there is no where for us to go, ffs! I have had a housing voucher but could not find an apartment that would take it before it expired. In a shelter for two years waiting for an apartment for me and my partner but there was only singles housing available. Until there is a fundamental change in available low cost housing, homelessness will NEVER go away. The question is essentially about intentions. If the public doesn't want homeless on the streets, build some freaking homes we can afford.

The real issue is FICA tax, which is a regressive tax, and government handouts that encourage homelessness. Just ask the homeless what they do or just watch them. They do every drug in the book and/or are alcoholics. They need rehab, not handouts. And the funny thing is, it's mostly the rich that say the rich don't pay their fair share. Bernie Sanders is perhaps the best example of this. Don't you think that's odd that the rich want to pay more in taxes? Unless increasing taxes makes them more money, which it does not that corporations are the government, if you can even call it a government. All it'll take is 5% of Americans to pull their money out of the banks and everything is done. The entire system will explode and the US will cease to exist. That's about 16.5 million people.

Homelessness is less of a problem in my area because of the brutal winters but it's started to become a problem in the larger cities (these would be considered small cities in other states). The cost of housing is a huge problem already and a lot of people want to move here before understanding the housing shortage problem. Our cities and the state are working to address the problem and can do so because the numbers are so small but I worry that the problem could grow quite a bit.

It’s really not that one-dimensional. I live in a self-governed community composed of people who were homeless. (Not including myself-my rent was just too high, so I came here) It’s safe, clean, and I see this as a model for dealing with SOME of the homeless-no violence or theft, and we can’t deal with either serious mental or medical issues, but for most, it’s a chance to get their lives together. That’s nearly impossible when living on the street-no showers, bathrooms, or trash disposal. No address for an employer or anyone who wants to contact you. It’s a downward trajectory, and this is an opportunity to begin an upward trajectory. Many people, when given this opportunity have gotten jobs or work in a micro business we’ve started here.
In other words, things aren’t always what they seem to be.
The thing I’ve learned is that all people have a story. I knew very little about who these folks really were before I got to know them.

Right Wing people think criminalizing everything, instituting harsher sentences, being "tough on crime" has an impact, yet, for some reason, Republican led districts have the highest rates of poverty and crime per 1000. Nations that have some of the toughest, nastiest most brutal prisons on the planet don't see their brutal punishments for crime having any effect.
Meanwhile, we have some Nordic countries with prisons nicer with a higher and better standard of living than what a number of free "hard-working" Americans ever see.
    How is that?
The US is suppose to be one of the richest, most powerful nations in the world, but, a significant portion of its leadership is too corrupt, greedy, and self interested in using politics for personal gain in power and wealth than to actually DO something to make the nation a better place.
Being "tough on crime" and wrcking homeless camps is theater for simple idiots that don't understand how social programs can and do work. After all, part of the republican playbook is corrupting education so their voting base remains stupid and easy to sell on simple theater.
It speaks volumes when education is the "enemy" of a political party, when a political party wants to ban books because they can't even trust their own people to think for themselves. SMH.
