Does Clearing Homeless Camps Just Extend the Crisis?

- Many Western cities are grappling with large encampments on the streets as homeless populations grow. In Phoenix, a judge recently ordered one such encampment to be cleared after local residents sued the city for violating public nuisance laws. In today’s episode, we hear from people living in that camp about what comes next and why advocates fear similar legal strategies could soon be used in other cities.

I’m sure having a mass of humanity pour in from the southern border will only exacerbate the problem.
Democrats don’t care. They just want votes.
Bring the source of the drugs closer to the consumers. LOL
How about you ask "Why don't you want to be in a shelter?"
Oh because they're going to say "You can't drink or do drugs if you stay there"
I work on the streets day in and day out with homeless people. Most of them are drug addicted or alcoholic. There are free 12-18 month in-house rehabs they could go to and very few take advantage of the programs. These programs help with their addictions, education, counseling, job training and job placement. Unfortunately, the addictions have such a strong hold on them, they are not willing to give it up.
Do they have any quality of life?
And what role did society play in their downfall?
And does that mean we all have a responsibility to help them?
Or should we look away or if they are a danger to us should we keep them separate?
Is there a solution when billionaires don't pay taxes and the gulf between rich and poor is vast...

"Does Clearing Homeless Camps Just Extend the Crisis?" the question answers itself, to be honest
I don't think the residents and businesses think that clearing the camp will solve homelessness, just let them walk their neighborhoods safely and comfortably. It's not up to the locals to solve homelessness, that task belongs to everyone.
Clear the camps and bus the homeless to San Francisco, where they will be given the respect they deserve, they can run free to camp, shoplift, do drugs and shit on the street

As an actual homeless person, clearing camps doesn't do anything but move the problem BECAUSE there is no where for us to go, ffs! I have had a housing voucher but could not find an apartment that would take it before it expired. In a shelter for two years waiting for an apartment for me and my partner but there was only singles housing available. Until there is a fundamental change in available low cost housing, homelessness will NEVER go away. The question is essentially about intentions. If the public doesn't want homeless on the streets, build some freaking homes we can afford.
Cost of housing has become ridiculous. My property tax assessment in Denver went up almost 30 percent in one year. I don't know how young people are going to afford a house if this keeps up while wages are only rising at about 4 percent. 😅 Meanwhile drug addiction treatment & mental health access for most people is spotty at best. Not to mention income gap between the wealthy & uber rich is shameful. Capitalism is showing a glaring weakness.
We don't have true capitalism here. Due to favorable tax structures, corporate subsidies and incentives, and with citizens united decision, we now have a plutocratic financial system. In true capitalism, there is a separation between the government and business.
Capitalism didn't shut down the economy for the flu, and print trillions of dollars to pay people to stay home, causing rapid inflation. Dumbass politicians who wouldn't know capitalism if it came up and cock-smacked them in the face did.

Homelessness will never go away because too many people make too much money off it.
'The city has not done enough to abate the nuisance'.
This statement should be changed to: 'The city has not done enough to house the unsheltered'.
Odd. The cities that do the most to help the homeless, have the most homeless.
Not odd. Homeless people will travel to cities which help.
And they re shipped out of republican states much like migrants.
And red states simply don't declare their and or publish their numbers.
And red states ignore what's infront of their eyes ...as they re dealing with far higher crime numbers. And the endless shooting of their own children by the flood of guns leadership refuses to confront.
This is not a red or blue issue. It's an American issue and based in the increasing gulf between rich and poor and a failure to pay taxes and to enforce taxes on those who own multiple homes.
@@eldenringer6466 The problem is no one, from either political party, is brave enough to properly name the problem. Hint, its not taxes, guns, rich people to blame...
@@eldenringer6466blue states have more homeless because of their terrible policies
@@eldenringer6466 bro, it ain't taxes. The rich pay significantly more in taxes than you. The real issue is FICA tax, which is a regressive tax, and government handouts that encourage homelessness. Just ask the homeless what they do or just watch them. They do every drug in the book and/or are alcoholics. They need rehab, not handouts. And the funny thing is, it's mostly the rich that say the rich don't pay their fair share. Bernie Sanders is perhaps the best example of this. Don't you think that's odd that the rich want to pay more in taxes? Unless increasing taxes makes them more money, which it does not that corporations are the government, if you can even call it a government. All it'll take is 5% of Americans to pull their money out of the banks and everything is done. The entire system will explode and the US will cease to exist. That's about 16.5 million people.
So what if he was a veteran. The vet knew that if he held someone in a chokehold for 15 mins it would kill them.
It's interesting you think you know better than the people who were there about what happened because you saw a 10 second video clip on tiktok
@chrisbammer4946 Actually, I'm going on what witnesses said not from a video. There was a nurse and several others. The nurse told him the young man was dying, yet he held on. Any idiot knows that a chokehold can kill. My husband is a veteran before you start yapping more. As soon as he found out the dead man had a record, his story changed to he clenched his fist. Some hero grabbing someone with no weapon from behind and choked them to death. That's the witness statement, and that's why his ass got arrested. He's a punk for trying to use his veteran status.
He didn't know he had no weapon. Only that he made threats and had not yet pulled one, do you stop the crazy homeless guy making threats after he pulls a knife and starts cutting people? Or a gun and starts shooting? Or is it reasonable to take him at his word that he'll hurt people and take him down before anybody gets seriously injured. The level entitlement you're displaying here is unreal.
Clearing a homeless encampment only clears out an area it doesnt solve the problem of the homeless... I bouvht my home nearly 30 years ago and if i had to do this today id probably be living in a homeless shelter or encampment as well.. I sure coukdnt have afforded a home at todays prices ... Not even a cracker box with multiple problems... With the outrageous cost of homes today.. Tge American Dream of owning your own home is pretty well dead for most folks... Which is another catch 22 . as you never have any equity from renting someone elses property.
Help needs to be tied to mandatory mental health treatment and drug rehabilitation. Once clean and treated, job placement and housing. I reject help without conditions. That’s not helping, that’s enabling and California is in the state it’s in because they don’t know the difference.
It only gets the garbage picked up, cleaning those camps does absolutely nothing to hinder or help, experience is a thousand knowings.

We need to put more energy and resources into finding housing for people, not sweeping them like refuse. That solves nothing.
That was tried already and it's a failure, ever see section 8 housing buildings? Even Police won't go into the area at certain times of the day.
We have millions of empty houses. Give them a house, give them a job. Have an advocate work with them. Get them any help they need. Problem solved. And it would be cheaper than the BS they're doing now.
Those millions of empty homes are owned by someone or a company, hence private property.
… clearing the homeless does one thing … protects those of us that are not on drugs, that work hard, that survive by conducting business. In our minds we see them as homeless and need help. But to most of them it's their choice to live in a drug induced euphoria were everything is fine. You only live in your mind.
Me tinks
It’s really not that one-dimensional. I live in a self-governed community composed of people who were homeless. (Not including myself-my rent was just too high, so I came here) It’s safe, clean, and I see this as a model for dealing with SOME of the homeless-no violence or theft, and we can’t deal with either serious mental or medical issues, but for most, it’s a chance to get their lives together. That’s nearly impossible when living on the street-no showers, bathrooms, or trash disposal. No address for an employer or anyone who wants to contact you. It’s a downward trajectory, and this is an opportunity to begin an upward trajectory. Many people, when given this opportunity have gotten jobs or work in a micro business we’ve started here.
In other words, things aren’t always what they seem to be.
The thing I’ve learned is that all people have a story. I knew very little about who these folks really were before I got to know them.

Right Wing people think criminalizing everything, instituting harsher sentences, being "tough on crime" has an impact, yet, for some reason, Republican led districts have the highest rates of poverty and crime per 1000. Nations that have some of the toughest, nastiest most brutal prisons on the planet don't see their brutal punishments for crime having any effect.
Meanwhile, we have some Nordic countries with prisons nicer with a higher and better standard of living than what a number of free "hard-working" Americans ever see.
How is that?
The US is suppose to be one of the richest, most powerful nations in the world, but, a significant portion of its leadership is too corrupt, greedy, and self interested in using politics for personal gain in power and wealth than to actually DO something to make the nation a better place.
Being "tough on crime" and wrcking homeless camps is theater for simple idiots that don't understand how social programs can and do work. After all, part of the republican playbook is corrupting education so their voting base remains stupid and easy to sell on simple theater.
It speaks volumes when education is the "enemy" of a political party, when a political party wants to ban books because they can't even trust their own people to think for themselves. SMH.
Putting individuals in prison or jail is more expensive on the taxpayers than just addressing it from a humane point of view by planning and providing free or discounted housing.
