  • Regret. It's what's for breakfast.
    The Traxxas Slash is a household name in RC at this point. Most people have one, had one, or know someone who has one. In 2WD and 4WD, they're simple, reliable, cheap to fix and fun to drive. You can race them if you're keen, but as a muck-around basher they're one of the greats.
    Meanwhile, mini scale RC cars have enjoyed a resurgance in recent years. 1/24 scale crawlers are all the rage, Rlaarlo and WLToys are pumping out overpowered 1/14 and 1/16 scale buggies and truggies and people are all over them. And yeah, they're awesome!
    So you'd think that Traxxas Slash plus Mini Scale RC should should really result in a beaut little fun machine, right? Seems like a reasonable conclusion, doesn't it?
    Well, no. Not even close. Let me introduce you to the Biggest Mistake in RC.
    Let's (pro)test!

    - These were new Christmas 2018 - I guess the pandemic compressed my time-sense!
    - First unpacked & driven in Jan 2019.
    - Had fires both at that time; photo is from a little later.
    - I did set the XL2.5s to LiPO mode by holding the EzySET button to turn it green (red is for NiMH).
    - Mine has plastic axles but metal center shafts. I don't know if there are metal axles for these.

    I love all your videos! In a very short time you have become a go-to source for everything honest and true in rc. Thank you for all your awesome videos.
    That being said my experience with this rig is completely different. Instead of buying it and just bashing it. I kept it completely stock and drove it as if I was at the back of the pack with a far less capable vehicle then the guy at the front of the pack. I drove it like I was in it! I learned how it handled. When I had to accelerate and when I needed to let off to let things cool. Sometimes I had to take corners wide to let the esc/motor servo and or shocks cool. Sometimes I could carve the inside. Mines completely stock including the nimh. I'm guessing I've got close to 100 charges on that pack. Everything is warn for sure! But with a handful of new stock parts and that driving philosophy in the right hands it's pretty damn good compared to "any" Tamiya at the same price point lol
    Thanks again for sharing your experience.👍

      Very poignantly put. Thank you for sharing that point of view, it is valuable (and kind of what I was trying to get to at the end and how modern rc cars are so impressive, even comparatively poor ones like this. Tougher than most Tamiyas, yes indeed). Thank you :)

      i completely agree. I have tons of vehicles, faster, more capable, but at the end of the day I also have three slashes to four wheel drives and one 2 Wheel. they can all definitely be ised as bashers cause thats what they are in a way. But if you drive em like you are watching a 1:1 vehicle it changes everything.

    I don't buy smaller scale expecting better performance, I buy them because I run a small scale course in my backyard. These videos are helpful though and I can see why people with options rather get a 1/10 for the same price.

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  Před 20 dny +1

      This is a reasonable approach and interpretation. However, I have quite a few similar and smaller scale cars to these, yet the Traxxas mini slash is the worst of the lot in handling, design and durability. They're comparatively terrible cars and I can't believe traxxas is still selling the brushed version at least. Their brushless version is a lot better with its improved center of gravity, but the same poor suspension and weak axles are problematic. At least the brushless ones won't catch on fire from a 2s lipo, which has happened with both of mine.

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  Před 20 dny +1

      @joeoge9347 it seems to be a problem with the esc, the motors will take it all day. If they've updated the esc since mine, good. They really should have done so!
      Haven't had a latrax anything, sorry. Traxxas is just so expensive in Australia I don't have the same access to them that USA based hobbyists do. I understand they're a budget model with bushings instead of bearings. Don't know they'd be a better choice than arrma or even some of the MJX models, depending on body type and performance needed.
      Parts are certainly available for traxxas - but are the stock parts what you really want from a model like that? If so, no problem, you're set. But if you'll be upgrading it, it may be worth considering other options.

      I don't know about their availability and you can probably buy two MJX vehicles for the price of one LC Racing model. In any case these are all worthy vehicles. If you like the mini erevo, these will impress.

    The reason the esc caught fire is because you have to switch it from nimh to lipo, it’s on nimh from the factory

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  Před rokem +1

      It was switched to lipo. I had xl series ESCs since they were released, these were the 6th of 7th ones I'd owned. Very familiar with their operation and can set menus via the button without needing to look up instructions. Setting to lipo is trivial and was definitely done.
      Fwiw, changing to lipo activates the lvc feature. That's it. The mosfet array operation is unchanged between lipo and nimh settings. There's nothing magical about the lipo mode otherwise - even if I hadn't set it to lipo, outcomes would be unchanged.

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  Před rokem

      Heh yeah you'd be fine. Only lvc would be missing to save your battery from over discharge, but you'd notice it getting slower and if you stopped right then you'd still usually be fine.
      I've been playing with lipos for about 15 years at this point and have well over 100 of them in many sizes. Have tried most ESCs on the market, even built my own. This experience is why I'm confident the fire shouldn't have happened in these XL2.5 units. Traxxas really used the minimum suitable parts in them and they really could have added just one more mosfet or used slightly larger ones in the existing array and these little units would take a spanking all day without complaint.
      Even so, I suspect I just got a bad batch, with both burning. Traxxas did replace them both for me, but they're still sitting unused in my drawer. I don't like these ESCs much!

Back when they came out it was fun on the track AFTER installing a center diff, lowering and tuning the shocks, and running 2s for track, 3s for fun, and 4s with semi rubbery grip tires on perfectly smooth pavement. I had the velenion 380 in it. Super frustrating working on it especially the diffs. • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  Před rokem

      If they'd shipped with wider arrma then perhaps this would have been a different video. But again, wider arms and longer axles to compensate is more money spent on a platform that shouldn't need it. And it'll no longer be a SCT, so why not buy the mini eRevo instead?
      Battery adapter might add a small amount of resistance to the circuit. If anything, this would lessen strain on the esc, though it may add a little to the battery.

    Even if you spend more money and buy the slash vxl 4x4 it still breaks everything and rolls bad. Had to upgrade plastic driveshafts to metal, shock towers, a arms to RPM a arms. It’s the same story with the higher end slash. I would say this is very common with RTR vehicles.

      That's quite a feat for a model that was released 14 years ago :p
      But I'm glad you've enjoyed yours. This video was about a different model. The Velineon variant had the smaller motor and lighter weight, meaning lower center of gravity and lower mass. That meant better handling and better durability.
      Unfortunately, the brushed version was a combination of being too heavy, too top-heavy in particular, too slow and not durable enough. They took a risk with the giant 550 motor up top and I think it did not pay off. The brushless version is a different story :)

    I once bought a 1/16 Slash for a middle school RC Car club that I run. I chuckled when I watched the first few minutes of your video, because I've always told my students the exact same thing. It is the worst RC car I've ever driven, and I can't believe Traxxas still sells it. Hopelessly high center of gravity, poor tires with no upgrade options, and not even very fast with the 550 motor. I ended up converting ours to a 1/16 ERevo, and putting a cheap Surpass Hobby brushless system in it, and now it's great. But I've always thought Traxxas should drop that car from their lineup. @RCTNT  Před rokem

      Definitely set for Lipo but for one of two I did have the 2 in parallel. Kept to one on the second, but it flamed too. 2 lipos in parallel does not increase voltage, however, just available potential. Both were small batteries, it shouldn't have made a difference - but higher discharge potential alone could certainly blow a circuit if it already had low tolerances. Again though, the second one flamed even with just one battery - the same capacity and discharge rating battery as the Traxxas brand one, for that matter. Maybe we just had a bad batch or something, I dunno!

    After about 50 ft...I guess it goes into protection mode?

Only thing is that I believe it was engineered in the brushed era and adding the brushless means it wants to eat itself every outing. If you have one grab first the upgraded driveshafts - 9052X are the best. I went through many, many sets of stock, a few cheap anodized metal sets off ebay but 9052X is definitely the go. You will also need to start upgrading the gearbox as you chew it bit by bit - be mindful on compatibility with the Magnum 272 (unless you buy the whole unit!). The idler gear strips religiously (Robinson Racing hardened one is the go). Great truck though - heaps of parts available. If you'd kept yours stock, you may face the same issues I have. Your power system weighs less than OEM gear too, which would lower stress on the servo and drive train. Lower weight means greater durability.
      I guess the main point here is that we shouldn't need to replace the electronics for it to be ok. It's priced at a premium and same as the 1/10 2wd Slash. That makes it an easy choice, doesn't it? Cheers

      I'm glad you're enjoying yours. The spur gear really shouldn't be breaking on you, even with 3S brushless power. I suspect your gear mesh isn't set tight enough. Get that motor up snug, so the pinion is really close to the spur without pressing on it. You want to be able to wiggle the spur gear with your finger and have it ever so slightly move back and forth, just the tiniest amount. No more than that. Get that done right and this will be the last spur gear you'll need for quite some time!

      The VXL is brushless, yep. It's the 380 Velineon motor, so it's physically smaller than the 550 brushed Titan in the xl2.5 variant I have here. The Velineon esc handles 3s ok, as long as you watch motor temps and max current draw.
      Lighter weight, lower cog and thus a much better car. The brushed one I showed in my video is a failure of design and should not have been made like this, I think. Thankfully, it's the exception rather that the norm for traxxas, who generally are making reasonably great cars, particularly the newer designs that are not just revamps of the same tired designs from last decade!

I’ve had an arms break, driveshafts, bulkheads left and right, servo gears too many times to count, and don’t even get me started on that stupid little brushed motor. Burned out 7 of them in 6 months, on stock gearing and with monitoring motor temps quite regularly. And you can tell they tried to make them as cheap as possible by doing crap like not even glueing the tires. No big deal to glue tires, but still. They might be appealing to the beginner, but by the time you waste a bunch of money on this little thing you could’ve just bought something like a brushed rustler which will serve you much better. while every rc needs its upgrades, I’ve never had one as terrible as the Teton was, it honestly makes some Chinese rcs off of Amazon look durable.

      No worries! I don't know how the cost works out for you but if you like 1/16 and want a SCT, LC Racing stuff is seriously good. Have a look at this one (no affiliate link, just direct to one I'm considering getting myself) :
