Thought i'd showcase my favourite riffs from Pearl Jam's "Ten" album, from the perspective of how Stone and Mike's guitar parts work together.
Check out my channel for complete lessons, cover versions and other Pearl Jam related content
Stone Gossard really is such an underrated guitarist and musician in general. One of the greats.
sure is
Everything that ever happened is underrated hey
Dang. I've always loved Pearl Jam, but I never realized how incredible these riffs are. I've now gained even more respect for my third favorite band.
What are the other two
Frank Stan Aerosmith and Dream Theater
@@ethancooke593 Dream Theater is cool
Rush and van halen
Definitely. It's a shame they abandoned their riff based music and decided to opt for the more standard power chord structure they use now. I keep hoping they'll create a new album full of melodic riffs and the tone that defined their music. Yet with each new release they sound like any other band if you subtract Vedder's vocals.
The more I listen, the more I study, the more I learn, the more I realize how great Pearl Jam is. Thank you for this channel!
Gabriel Souza completely agree and youâre welcome!
Absolutely amazing and spot on. That really deconstructs the way hit songs are made and you certainly nailed the parts and the tone. Yes I liked and yes I subscribed! Keep it coming
Michael Wilson thanks Michael!
Yes! Great riffs, from great guitarists. Great vid! Love hearing the two side by side and then all together - something you just take for granted listening to the tunes. How big it makes the sound - just perfect :)
Thanks Darren! Yea it's amazing hearing just how huge the guitar parts sound. Evenflow was one that suprised me the most i think as Mike is just playing single notes over Stone's chords and that sounds huuuuge!
Another excelent video! It gives a wider angle and really helps understand the way Pearl Jam sounds! Thanks for sharing, it must have taken you quite some time to do it! Cheers!
Thanks very much, it was a bit of an experiment but it seems really popular so I'll do the same for each album :-) Yea the editing took ages to be honest! Glad you like it mate :-)
people are sleeping on this channel, so great, and even better he's English, keep up the good work my man
jebusgod thanks very much!
Great video. Shows how high level these guys really are. Its one thing for all of us to learn and play but to come up with this shit is genius. U got great tone and just nail the riffs. Good job man love it
Just discovered your channel with this video, you just earned a sub. Brilliant work here man, great choices for your top riffs! As a huge pearl jam fan and a returning guitar player I want to say thank you for the work you're doing!!
NathanSplosion thanks mate, really appreciate the kind words and welcome!! đ€đđ€
absolutely brilliant as always
This video is great. Really nice breakdown of a freakishly groundbreaking debut album
This is amazing! Just when I thought I couldn't love TEN anymore, I see this video! Such inventive guitarists!
freddybeer thanks buddy!
Dude you may be the only person on earth that likes Pearl Jam as much as me I love these types of videos because theyâre so different and they break up the usual you know trying to learn one song at a time format which is not bad for math but I like this because itâs different and it breaks it up for me so thank you
Thanks buddy glad you enjoyed this one!
I could hear that Garden riff cover all day. Great job!
acid mobba yes indeed! such a heavy riff đ€đđ€
Well done, sir. Every note on that record is really perfect!
Thanks colin!
If I could only listen to one album for the rest of my life it would be Ten.
Its such an amazing album, I have never loved as many songs on 1 album
Wow so cool đ very useful video, thanks đ
Great stuff, man. Thank you!
Seriously underrated channel. Very well made videođ
Alexander The Great cheers mate, Iâm a well kept secret haha. Really appreciate the comment đ€đ
Ten from Ten, I see what u did there.
No doubt about ya, u never cease to amaze
wayne kerr haha cheers buddy! Stay tuned as next week Iâm doing a quick play through of all the main riffs on Ten, rather than my top picks! đ€đ
Thats awesome! I'm really looking forward vs. greatest riffs
Marcelo AAM thanks Marcelo will do a few more lessons and then get VS up then!
Thanks a lot. I had shit to do when I got home but now I have to listen to this whole album again.
JLH HLJ hahaha great comment - sorry! But not sorry.... đđ€
Stone has some pretty damn good mother love bone riffs
This is an awesome video!!! Educational and impressive!
FACTION95 thanks, stay tuned for more soon!
Nice guitar tone Bro!
great video! i hope you'd shoot one for every pj album.
and as always, bass lessons please :)
PissBottleMan haha thanks mate, Iâll certainly do one for each album. Was good fun figuring out which riffs to put in! Will start learning bass immediately too đđ€
That might be the best PJ vid I've ever seen ha. So cool. Please do every record!!
GardenOfStone thanks man, no code coming soon đđ€
@@LetsPlayAll I just shared this with a bunch my long time PJ fanatics! Great work
GardenOfStone awesome cheers bro, check out my channel Iâve done vs and vitalogy already too plus a bunch of other PJ stuff!
Thank you for this!!! Proving why "10" is a masterpiece!
chris dougherty thanks Chris, Iâm not going to disagree mate đđ€
How the hell you only got 4k subs? Awesome video and thanks for the tabs ! Peace out from Brasil
JoĂŁo Queijo Haha thanks for the comment, I only set the channel up for fun earlier this year so still early days đđ€
thank you very much!
you did an awesome work đ
greetings from zĂŒrich
Great job, dude!
Yeah, Itâs been ages since I listened to ten, I gotta go back and listen again. That was the ducks nuts, thanks
Wayne Rivett no worries mate youâre welcome!
You got GREAT tone man!
love this
Great stuff! Vs. plz!
Also, âBreathâ from the Singles soundtrack - always had one of my favorite riffs.
Love it!
This was awesome. Was one of the biggest albums of my childhood. I never realised how intelligently the guitar parts were created together.
JCoreG thanks and glad you like the video format. Stay tuned...Vs coming soon!
New UK subscriber here. Great vid. Another vote for VS đđž
I really love this video.
cheers Rob!
My favorite one is âAnimalâ. Amazing song!
What a pun in the title hahah.
Nice video mate
Chernobog haha thanks, canât get away with that for the Vs video đ
Cool video dude! Thanks for sharing...
Wurzel Gumage thanks man, excellent name btw đ€đ
Just found your channel bro, its great and you are a amazing player. But please, do more stuff than just Pearl Jam!
Meastro Fuzz thanks and welcome! I set it up as Iâm a huge pj fan but I may well branch out if the demand is there đ
Very very nice
I hear a lot of âyellow Ledbetterâ in the song black when you break down the two guitar parts
Great list! But I have to say I was disappointed to not see the lead at the end of Porch that goes over the part you did show. I love that one
Brett Labe hey Brett, now that is a good call. Yup youâre probably right that riff does add a little more. I struggled to pick just one for each song though tbh!
Evenflow, and Porch, 2 of the greatest live tunes ever IMO, THEN we still have lil ditties like Alive and Black. Fack what a record!!! Changed my world and FINALLY after the 80s someone was speaking my language. âđđ€
Even flow is one of the most iconic riffs from the 90s
2:50 that lick is the most 90's thing ever. Don't ask me why đ€
Great clinic on how guitars can work together. Skynyrd was amazingly good at this too.
bevo65 thanks very much, had a lot of fun putting it together. Stay tuned Iâm working on vs next đ€
U guy's never disappoint
Wayne kerr thanks Wayne, from both of us đđ€
Wayne kerr lol
@@alexanderthegreat1356, cheers Mr Great, or can I be so bold as to call u Alex?
@@LetsPlayAll, love ya work guys.
go ahead lol
Mike and Stone are the best guitarists duo ever
Nice!
đ Awesome đ
Favorite
Oceans and Realese are my fav songs of the album...
Those 2 and Garden are the songs that still stand out to me 25 years later. Jeremy and Black were everyone's favorites back then.
Deep!
Deric Gregory listen to a late 90s early 2000s live version of black. Gives you a reborn appreciation for the song. That being said id be happy i never see them play it at a show im at again lol
Well done! Please do Vs and Vitaology.
Used Car Cowboy working on vs at the moment đ
Black is my favourite song! And Pearl Jam is my favourite band.
I just want to see them or I'll consider my life incomplete.
I live in India so I have a very low chance to see them and also I'm 19 and the way everyone's dying I am a little scared.
You need a 1080p camera, mate. Good content.
Nice video again. Could you share some info on the effect setup that both Mike and Stone mostly use? Trying to mimic it but cant seem to get it right (could be the other of things aswell that I got wrong).
Well, they've pretty much changed their setup every album and use various different effects pedals, amps and guitars. Watch this space though....i've got plans to show you how to get their sounds on each album :-)
@@LetsPlayAll Really look forward to that. Great job here, so much is lost in covers and transcriptions (or its hard to decode without seeing in the flesh)...big thank you!
Hi from Italy.
Great video, very interesting...how about make a video like this, about the songs that were not put on the Ten album? I mean like Wash, Brother, Breath...
Hope my english is good đ
Yes Iâll get to them all eventually and your English is very good đ€đđ€
Greatđ€. Thank you!
â„ïžâ„ïžâ„ïž
Do the evolution has always been in my top 10 list
The Les Paul sounds very "slash",the strat sounds very "Jimi" lol..
Kommissar This is true on multiple levels. As you mentioned, the LP & Strat were their respective guitars of choice. But also, Mike is a HUGE Jimi / SRV fan, and I think his playing style reflects that
Nice
Igor Mendes thanks igor!
Cool :-)
Next Vs?
SRPALME4 yes indeed! đ€
Please tell us what your recording / editing setup is. Nicely done!
Thanks Patrick. It's a very simple setup, i use a Samson CO1 USB condenser mic into my laptop running Audacity to record the guitar parts, pretty basic SLR camera (forget the make/model but let me know if you want the details), and I edit using Adobe Premiere Pro. Also use Adobe Spark for some of the titles. And lots of time :-)
You should put on some glasses and get together with Dan from That Pedal Show.
Awesome video!
xNimrod97x haha not a bad idea. Thereâd be quite a lot of forehead shine in that vid đ
Let's Play All haha youâre right but itâs all good. Really cool vids man, love hearing all the little details that I never noticed. đ
Anyone tells you âGrunge bands couldnât even play their instrumentsâ needs to be pointed to this video.
Really enjoyed the vid :-)
Is that Suhr classic S in Daphne blue? Thought it was only available in Sonic.
Actually I've just realised that it's a hardtail with vintage split post tuners and what appear to be bigger frets than used on a Classic S.
So... Was it a custom order?...
Hey Gary, tbh i think you know more about this guitar than me haha ;-) Yea it's Daphne Blue and was a custom order but i got it second hand, bit of a bargain tbh but the chap who ordered it had excellent taste fortunately! :-)
@@LetsPlayAll it's a lovely guitar.
@@GazMoz78 thanks mate
Hey mate, can you give me a run down of your gear ,pedal etc as I love your sound and was looking at getting the amp.
Hiya, basically a Wampler Tumnus into a FullTone OCD into the V40 Victory. Great little amp
Great video. How about Brain of J.
ohplezz fear not, itâs on the list đ€đ€
What pickups do you have in this Les Paul? Iâve been looking for a new set that nails Pearl Jam tones. Many thanks đđ»
Fendrix 69 I know the bridge is a BareKnuckle but Iâm not sure which one! They have no markings on so when I get chance Iâll figure out the output and get BareKnuckle to confirm and do a vid on it!
Let's Play All thank you so much mate! They sound great indeed, perfect for PJ. Now that you mentioned Bare Knuckles I bet these are the mules which are Alnico 4, as I can hear the wound strings are not too focused snd the highs are present but controlled.
Fendrix 69 yea I thought the bridge is most likely a mule. I think the neck pup is the original. Guitar is not a Gibson btw, itâs an Edwards Japanese LP which was pretty cheapđ€đ
Let's Play All Edwards are awesome I have a Tokai Premium LS186 đ go Japan! đ€đ»âš
P.S if the neck PU in the Edwards is stock then itâs an SD â59.
What gear are you using? Your sound is really great!
mike grabowski Thanks mate. For this vid Iâm using a wampler tumnus into an ocd and an sl drive for some parts. Thatâs into a victory v40 ampnđ€
Leash is Also a great one
Where can i get that guitar? Is it a Gibson with the logo scratched off or is it like a kit
Underrated Song Covers itâs a Japanese made Edwards Jimmy Page Relic model. My cheapest guitar as I bought it at an auction from the estate of AC/DCs long time guitar tech (so it has some mojo!) He swapped the bridge pickup out for a bare knuckle (mule I think) and put a Gibson decal on it, which then got covered over. Theyâre awesome guitars and I gig with it all the time. Necks thinner than a Gibson and its light too but has loads of sustain. If you can get one second hand do it!
I love pearl jam.
Would you have any interest in doing a video like this for blood sugar sex magik?
me too haha....now that's a great idea....i may have to branch out. My channel is called Let's Play All after all ;-)
My fave is yellow ledbetter
teomponk 17 stay tuned for a lesson on that one v soon đđ€
Hello.
Have you met the band?
Or have they contacted you?
One of my favourite pearl jam riffs is from life wasted. Whatâs your view on it?
great riff. they've got so many man!
Edwards Les Paul JP relic?
Samuel Cifuentes Segura yes mate weâll spotted. Bridge pickup was swapped out for a bare knuckle mule by its previous owner, who was also AC/DCs guitar tech đđ€Got it at an auction and theyâre such good value guitars!
Could you maybe do a playlist on Alice In Chainâs Dirt?
Mels Walraven Oo would love to but this channel is just for PJ related content. Never say never though, if thereâs enough demand I may do their bands đ€
Let's Play you need anoth ch. Alice in Chain would be awesome
One of greatest albums ever. Masterpiece
i see what you did there
What about Garden?
kev b thatâs Riff 8 đ€
Rearview Mirror for me ....I know it is not from Ten , but it is my favourite PJ riff...
Ticonderous1 stay tuned for the Vs vid đ
will do brother sweet ...
Great video. What Kind of ampli you play?
Alberto C. Thanks mate, itâs a Victory V40. UK made single channel amp and I run it just on the edge of breakup with pedals (Wampler tummnus, OCD and SL Drive)
Swell channel
Such a hard video to make. Great job. So many little cool interplays between the two players. The more you listen the more you see just how not so obvious stones parts are. He's playing with tunings or timings and rhythms or weird capos. Mike's playing is always a little more conventional to me.
bravo bravo thanks bravo! Really appreciate the comment. Yea a lot of guitarist gravitate to Mikeâs parts but Stone has most of the best riffs imo đ€đđ€
This is great. But youâve gotta get rid of that music playing in between the riffs. Kills the groove of the whole video.
jay riggity noted! Thanks for the feedback mate will leave out for vs đ
And I canât wait to hear vs! That opening riff to the album is amazing.
jay riggity yes indeed that is the way to start your follow up album!
Agreed
you should check out Rick Beato on CZcams if you never heard of him.
it would be great to see you both break down a song some day
safenders wow thatâs an awesome comment, that would be cool đ€đ
Guitars with no brand? What the
Andy Bradford haha well the LP is an Edwards (Japanese made) and used to belong to AC/DCs long time guitar tech. Itâs got a bare knuckle mule in the bridge. The other is a Suhr Classic Custom. Opposite ends of the scale price wise but the LP has a great neck and superb tone đ€
I thought it was a top 10 video of the riffs
Vic Palacio sorry I put a pun (joke) in the title đ - Iâm going through the albums track by track and then Iâll to a best of video! Sorry if the title was misleading đ€
Louis CK?
Alice Nisi I's gonna say whaaaaa but then I looked at the dude and yes you're correct.
Nailed it
we share the same stylist ;-)
sounds nothing like it .....where is the riff at the beginning of garden
If you're looking for full lessons for Garden, i've already filmed those...
Stone's Parts: czcams.com/users/edit?o=U&video_id=iM38i3XsNtU
Mike's Parts: czcams.com/users/edit?o=U&video_id=jOf98kTkIpw
For some reason the vast majority of Pearl Jam covers on CZcams are really dumbed down. The groove and nuances are nowhere to be found. Youâre the opposite. I actually enjoy listening to your covers and you make me want to pick my guitar back up. From a HUGE Pearl Jam fan-thanks.
07foxmulder wow thatâs a great comment and please do go grab your guitar!! For me itâs all about trying to nail the parts exactly as they are played and I love unlocking the mystery of some of my fave tunes đ€đ
It's a shame Pearl Jam went from playing awesome melodic riff based rock music with an ominous vibe, to what they've become since the turn of the century is basically power chord pop rock that sounds no different than any other band if you take Vedder's vocals away. I keep waiting for them to revisit the approach of their VS and Ten albums that defined their sound and were solid listens front to back. With the exception of a couple of tunes and some of Eddies solo stuff, I find their recent albums mediocre at best. I don't get it.
Not to give you hell or anything but you weren't in tune ;)
haha yup i know mate, only realised after i'd posted it...Stone's part in Even Flow....oops! Will try harder for the Vs one :-)
Less talking please
Old video, don't worry, I've improved the video content with age, I cringe watching the older ones haha. Every day's a school day :-)
