    I would really like to see a video on saddle trees. What makes a good tree? How to order it. Compare a bare tree to a finished saddle in order to compare before and after saddle horns for example so one knows what size to get….etc. In my mind the tree is the most important but seems like most of us know very little about them. Many thanks.

    I have a saddle that's probably 45 years old and keep in our family room on a saddle rack. I cleaned it with Farnam saddle soap and oiled it this past summer. I brought it outside in the sun and let my black bottle of neatsfoot oil and saddle warm up. It looks great but it has developed a white powdery film on the fenders. I brush it off but it continues to come back. Any suggestions as to what it is or what I've done wrong to cause it.?

      Hello! We've encountered this before. When too much neatsfoot oil is applied, it will leech back out in a cold environment. You can keep wiping it off, eventually it will stop. Also, as it gets warmer it will stop until it gets cold again. It isn't something to worry about.

    How often would you oil your saddle? Also, I’ve seen people take a wire brush and rough out the saddle again. Would you recommend this after the oil completely dries?

      How often you oil a saddle depends on lots of things. How much was it oiled when it was built. How old is it now. Has anything else (other conditioners) been used on it. The only way to give a perfect answer is to see it and feel it. Other than that I would say approximately once a year you really don’t need any more then I would just use a conditioner with somewaxes in it. Like Big Bend conditioner, saddle butter, skidmores etc. The wax really helps prevent dry rot in saddles. As long as the saddle is roughout, a wire brush shouldn’t hurt it but it isn’t necessary. Let us know if you have more questions.

    Thanks very much for the tip on oiling a new saddle. I am interested in that saddle that you were using in the demo. Is that model one that is available for sale at your shop? Thanks.

    Is it bad to use vegetable oil ? Don’t wanna make a mistake ? Thanks for the video

      Hello! It isn't bad to use vegetable oil, but you should use it very sparingly. It is easy to use too much which will leave you with an oily mess. On a side note, using vegetable oil on tack makes it more appealing to mice and other pests. They will be more inclined to chew on your leather products if you use vegetable or olive oil. If you have a place for your saddle that can be kept pest free this shouldn't be a problem.

    What is your take on mink oil? How does it compare to neatsfoot oil?

    • @BigBendSaddlery
      @BigBendSaddlery  Před rokem +1

      Hello!
      We don’t use mink oil in the shop. But if you choose to use it, use it in the same quantity and in the same way you would use olive oil or neatsfoot oil

    Is it ok to put the Skidmores on the top side of the roughout?

    • @BigBendSaddlery
      @BigBendSaddlery  Před rokem

      Hello! You can put Skidmore's on the top side of roughout. If you do this, you will want to use it sparingly because a little goes a long way. It may also darken the color of your saddle.
