    I got a antique-ish Simco saddle I googled it and it’s 30 years old!! This video is helpful and inspiring me to clean up this old saddle it has a great build seat is comfy and it just needs a good clean and replacements!

    You get a more nourishing clean with a bar of solid saddle soap and a soft brush

    I picked up a second hand western saddle not in as bad condition as this but it helped me get it clean and soften the leather again. It had no suede on it so pretty straightforward to clean. Iv also put a sheepskin seat saver over it so that should protect it

    If you can get some hydrophane it is amazing. Makes leather so soft. It also makes it waterproof/resistant, so no more mold!

    Wow you did a amazing job. I’m currently cleaning a breast belt for a western saddle and it has that white stuff and it’s looking much better after cleaning the dust off, I can’t wait to put some soap and oil on it, and most importantly ride in it!

    I was always told by the ranch hands to never oil the leather latigo cinches or off side billets. Just replace them. Their reasoning was that oiling caused the leather s to stretch too much and they didn't want that while riding so much. Of course they checked their girths regularly while riding. The other reason was that the oily leather latigos would stick when cinching up. they used baby powder for the latigos to slip easily and they wouldn't have to pull up hard and make a horse cinchy. Those guys girthed up 5-7 times on their horses and did it slowly in stages.
    Have you ever heard of this??

    • @sj2383
      @sj2383 Před 5 lety +2

      Personally, I have never heard of this and think it's extremely unsafe to keep the most essential parts of your tack unoiled. The latigo and offbillet keep your saddle in place and if these become dry and brittle, it will become just as much of a hazard than if it were to stretch. We have to remember that most horses do hold their breath when being cinched. It's important to check regularly as you have mentioned. Personally, I have never noticed a difference between a brand new latigo/offbillet vs one that I have oiled the dickens out of. Leather will by nature, stretch. But it also will become dry by salt and the elements. I would think the baby powder trick would accelerate this and how would they know when to replace them? My best advice is to take care of your equipment often, never let leather get fully dry, clean and condition often. This is coming from someone who has been riding the better half of 20 years on barrel horses. I hope this helps to answer your question :)

    Good job cleaning it up. If the seat is suede you shouldnt use oil or soap on it I dont believe. But other than that good cleaning. She will be happy.

    Try using Scrubbing Bubbles on the mildew & mold prior to doing anything else. Work it into the area affected with a stiff tooth brush. Don’t laugh you will think me later.
