Tack Tip: Things to Consider about Different Saddle Styles
I owned Ranch Horse Outfitters/Paul Custom Saddlery for 15 years. Great info you have here. We always used the wood trees. I never liked the fiberglass trees because they have no "give" to them. Wish you had shown the correct place to measure seat size. People are so confused about that for some reason. Also wish folks understood that you can't get an accurate gullet width on a built saddle! LOL
I'm still looking for a video on how the horn is attached and how it's able to withstand the amount of abuse they get from roping heavy cattle, mules, etc etc. And the part of the saddle that it's attached to appears to be made out of fiberglass or something similar. I became much more interested in the construction of a saddle after I saw a cowboy rope a mule and wrap the rope around the horn for friction and then see it smoke like it's on fire. I've never seen that before until about 15 minutes ago. I was in awe! 😳
Just curious, what happens in a wind storm? Or just a high wind ? In other words , what keeps the poles from moving forward or back ?
Hello! The tension and leverage between the corner stakes and the poles hold the tipi up even in strong winds. We aren’t saying that it can’t be blown over, but if set up properly it can withstand a pretty strong storm.
@@BigBendSaddlery Thank you for the reply Gary. I guess that makes sense.
Thank you for this information
I prefer the rifle butt facing rear on the left side. If it's angled properly and far enough forward, you won't have a problem swinging your leg over when mounting or worry about it falling out while going up a hill. I rarely take the rifle out while I'm riding and wouldn't want to shoot it while mounted anyways, for the horses sake. With this setup, I can dismount and easily take the rifle out of the scabbard quickly because it's right there on the left side where you dismount from. I hunt in heavily wooded areas too, where brush and tree branches can easily snag on the rifle if it's mounted on the front. Plus it impedes the horses neck when attempting a one reign stop or if the horse is turning its neck. Everybody has their own preference I guess.
Do you have a website? I am interested in your products. Thanks.
Hello! Yes, we do have a website. bigbendsaddlery.com/
@@BigBendSaddlery thank you for your response.
have you made any videos explaining fenders on a western saddle , why the leathers are under or over the fenders ?
Not often do you find someone that is not in a big hurry when giving you information, this is a very helpful video!
What are you using as the applicator when you apply the conditioner? I enjoy your videos and have learned so much - thanks.
We use a piece of wool skin. You can also use a soft cloth
Thank you
This was extremely helpful… and it WORKED!!! Thank you!
Great video! What if the strap has stitching along the edges? Will doing that break the thread?
Sir… thank you for your wonderful information. Although I purchased a rug and it has a crease in it from where it was folded, do you have any recommendations on how to get that crease out?
You can pour or spray rubbing alcohol on the crease and a little further on each side. Make sure it is wet all the way through then wait about 10 minutes and fold the crease the opposite direction of the crease. Then gently tap it with a hammer or just push on it with your palm. Then roll the hide tightly 90 degrees to the crease. Use your fist as a hammer and hammer the crease area once again. Then unroll and pull the hide in opposite directions till you have gone all the way around the crease. The creased area is all we are working with. Then put the hide on the floor and lay it straight. Then add some heavy weights to the top like books or anything flat and heavy. Leave overnight or until completely dry. Be sure to place something between floor and hide and hide and books to prevent any moisture damage.
Very informative. Thanks
Thank you!
What can i use if i just want to wear one spur. Just cos i like the jingle of it?
Would've never thought about skin lotion as a leather conditioner. But...that does make perfect sense.
Thank god somebody actually showed how to wrap the latigos, much obliged sir
Fine explaining. Appreciated the various methods you took the time to show.
Thank you! My wife got me a new, really nice looking leather belt that is as stiff as spring steel. I look forward to being able to finally wear it!
How about a video showing how to put saddle strings on a saddle without going through the tree?
Outstanding
I have caught horses by simple roping but this was awesome
From India Maharashtra very good helpful presention
Your a good man
Hi I have a hair-on cowhide rug and it has severe buckling from cleaning urine spots from my dogs. I have searched and searched the internet on how to fix this but have only been recommended to use some expensive products such ph balancer, hydrator, acidifier, etc all costing nearly as much as I paid for the rug! Any suggestions? I appreciate your response!

Thank you for doing what you are doing for Ranchers!
Fantastic! Never heard this explanation before.
thank you sir. agree and agree !!! can't say that very often on YT, k
Excellent instruction video, no time waste , just knowledge ! Thanks
🫣😱👀Yes to long . I like them a bit snug smaller opening. 🤝🤝🤝🤝🤝🤝👍👍👍🙏🫣
Thank you, this video was so helpful. I have a very stiff beautiful leather belt which l dont wear because is just too stiff. I will certainly use your method and my lotion to soften it.
Really like your videos. Cockroaches will also eat the outside of leather treated with any natural oil, or tallow. So annoying. I add a few drops of citronella oil in neatsfoot oil, to repel cockies, and mice, rats. It works well.
That’s a very popular style of reins stockman have been using in Australia for over a century. Enjoying your videos sir. Thank you for posting.
I always learn something! Thanks
What would be a Cantle or Saddle for someone like myself with a not so good lower back. That gives somewhat of a good support for the lower back ? Good video sure learning a lot from your video's...thanks.
Tucker saddle and a gaited horse. 😃
Hello! I wish there was a straightforward, easy answer. This depends on many things including body type and size, damage to your back, and your personal preferences. My advice is to try sitting in as many different saddle styles as you can and see what feels good to you.
Great info that everyone needs to know.
Can you put them in the washing machine?
Hello! You can, just be prepared for it to be very loud and possibly beat up the inside of your washer.
Hello... I make 100% mohair cinches, and if you put them in the washing machine, the fibers will very likely felt. Probably won't affect the function, but it won't look the same. I always advise users to wash using a bucket only and don't agitate.@@BigBendSaddlery
Can you tell me where the half inch measure on the saddles began and what brought it on
Something about this gentleman's genuineness is powerful irresistible. I swear, I'd buy a used car from him in a second if I needed one and he recommended it. Haven't tried the tips yet, but I will tomorrow when my arthritis is (hopefully) better and I'm 100% sure his methods will work.
What oil do you recommend to use if mice like olive oil?
Pure neatsfoot oil is a great option
I have heard guys recommend peanut oil. Do you have an opinion on that?
I have never used it but I am sure it would be good. Just remember the mouse deal. They like any kind of food product.
Saludos👍👍👍
Wonderful video! Amazing what experience can do...great information.
Have you ever seen anyone carrying the rifle scabbard vertically, at the rear of the saddle?
Yes I have but depending on circumstances it is probably the least desirable way to carry it. If it is vertical then it is difficult to swing your leg over. If you angle it back so as not to be a burden getting on it is apt to come out on steep inclines. Sometimes you just have to do what works for you in the country you are using it in
How long is the tripping collar it’s self?
Hello! From fold to fold is 30". From D ring to D ring is 35"
Very nice. Do they still make rope out of natural fibers or is that all synthetic
Maestro!!
Thank you!
What would you do with this saddle? Repair? Junk it?
Hi Gary! Thanks for sharing your wisdom!
