About 55 years ago I was biking down the Kapiti beach and met an old Maori man, and I told him I was going to Para para umu. "Where?"
" Para para umu sir." I replied slowly and carefully.
    "Oh, y'mean Parapar'um' ."
When two vowels came together in a compound word, Maori dropped the first in fast everyday speech, and swallowed the vowel at the very end of the word , and from their Para-par'-um' early settlers got Paraparam. Nowadays people speak Victoria University 101 Maori, and old people who learnt kitchen Maori can hardly understand what they are talking about.
Similarly Londoners don't say "Lon don" but "Lun'in" and North Islanders refer to "Crys'cherch"
