As an English person who grew up in London and then moved to Wellington the one thing that really struck me is how little Wellingtonians care about celebrities. I’ve seen half the All Blacks team and Taika Waititi on separate occasions just walk into busy bars and have a beer/some food and hardly anyone bats an eyelid. My favourite story was when some friends of mine were at a restaurant in town and Jacina Ardern showed up with her husband but they got turned away because they were fully booked. They took it on the chin and went somewhere else. Famous people don’t expect/get any special treatment and regular Wellingtonians aren’t bothered by them. In London it’s all screaming and swarming for selfies and whatever but over here it’s just yep you’re another person

Jeff Abbott we have a few downsides, life is $$ cos we’re so far away, flights are $$ cos we’re so far away too. But yeah, nah, most kiwis love their country We often see USA like a holiday destination, for a visit but not as lifestyle. One thing I love about Americans is how patriotic they are everywhere, I dint agree with a lot of stuff in USA but you gotta love ppl who are proud to be where they’re from!

I emigrated here in ‘78. Arrived in Auckland and had a four hour wait for the connecting flight to Wellington. I remember the only food available at AKL International airport (just a shed, in those days) was either a meat pie swimming in something they called liquor or a tinned spaghetti sandwich. Nearly caught the first ‘plane back out! Boy, am I glad I didn’t.

I started coming in '84 - and the food was pretty good then, but it's become outstanding. I was in AKL last XMas (had never seen pohutakawas in bloom) and the restaurant food - even in small places - was outstanding. I think it comes down to the food supply, which is quite good. Market eggs, for instance, are almost always fresh enough to make a successful eggs benedict.
