You probably know what it's like to drop a stick in the middle of a song. It's tough enough to keep going with just one arm while you use your other one to pick up a new stick.
Now imagine not having that second arm.
Well, that's Jack Thomas' reality. As a one-armed drummer, he's had to find ways to continue doing what he loves while getting creative with how he approaches writing and playing parts.
Whether you have one arm or two, this video will teach you how to do more with less.
Here are some key takeaways from this lesson about overcoming limitations and challenging your creativity:
0:00 - Introduction
01:00 - Composition
How can someone with only one arm replicate something played with two arms? You might need to drop a hi-hat hit to strike the snare, and the drums tend to take priority over the cymbals. It can also be tough to move to a cymbal after a one-handed roll, so instead of adding more tom hits, add extra bass drum hits (the linear technique) to give your hand extra time to get back to the crash. Jack also does 'sweep fills', hitting multiple drums with one motion.
06:26 - Ergonomics
Every drummer should be comfortable and not strain. Jack keeps all of his cymbals on the left side of his kit because he's missing his right arm. Experiment with gear placement, and if you find that it's easier to execute grooves and fills with a different setup, that's the one that's right for you. Balance is important: how do you sit in the best position to be stable and do things as fluently as possible? Strengthen your core, make sure your seat is high enough, and keep your shoulders and back straight.
08:15 - Technique
Many drummers complain about their 'weak hand', but Jack can't afford to have a weak hand! Practice and develop those skills by putting in the work. Jack uses the 'hot stove technique' - pulling back his stick quickly after each stroke - so that he has time to bring it back down quickly without straining (and means he can more easily accent notes with just one hand). If the song is really fast - especially if it's punk or hardcore - he'll hold the stick in the middle so one end hits the hi-hat and the other end hits the snare. And for cases where he doesn't have to (or can't) play a cymbal and snare simultaneously, he'll add accents to cymbals to fill in the gaps and give the illusion of it. Also, don't neglect your hi-hat pedal - it not only opens and closes the hats, but it's there for you to keep time and add color to a groove.
Since losing his arm several years ago, Jack has had to change his approach so much that he's created his own drumming identity, and suggests you do the same. "You are your own drummer. Many drummers struggle with wanting to be like their favorite drummer. You don't need to be like that. Have your goals, but develop your own personality within drumming. Do what works for you. Figure out what you can do, don't focus on what you can't, and you'll have a lot more fun."

I can’t even play with two arms.
😂
Must be the curse of the ulrichs
I can barely play with 2!!!
Lol
Ulrich brothers..
I’ve been an amputee for almost 30 years and had my first drum lessons this week. Hopefully I’ll be able to kill it like you one day 💙
I lost my right arm in 1984. I've always had an interest in drumming. Played around with my nephews kit and finally got my own electronic drums!
This man has a huge amount of talent. He makes me look like a kid who had just learned a simple rock beat
Talent but also a lot of hard work! Use it as inspiration 😊
Why not use triggers like Mr.Allen in Def Leppard?
@@markwilmeth3082 doesn’t need to. He has his own style.
@@Fortunecookielied Has he ever wanted to learn? Or is he to stuck on him self to try it?
@@DrumeoOfficial how do your heads not lose their coating
Even if I learn drums, I won't be able to reach this guy's mental strength. He is one in thousand examples that no limitations can ever prevent you from doing something you love. No words to explain! Thanks to Drumeo for this!
You're welcome Rudrajit! You're right - Jack's mental fortitude is truly inspirational. :)
Agree. Extreme mental toughness. I'm also very easily distracted.
You are right only because you decided to limit yourself. If you put in the time and practice, you can achieve a lot more than you think.
If you trained for 10,000 hours, whatever technique it is you practiced, after 10,000 hours, you'd have it mastered that technique.
@@michaelcassady1289 I disagree. No matter how long you do something, what matters is to do it right and work on craft, fixing mistakes and being patient
No limitations can ever prevent you from doing something you love? Well, highly debatable
Even though he has one hand. He doesn’t care. He’s playing better than most drummers
It’s all in the attitude how you approach things! One arm, bad hands, bad wrists, severe arthritis, wrist nerve damage, getting older, it all factors in how you have to adjust. 💪🏻
Absolutely!
Until you measure his double kick's with a metronome for accuracy and realize that dudes like Eric Morotti, Andrew Baird, Marco Pitruzella, Wanja Groger, and Elliott Hoffman exist.
After playing for about 5 years I got Carpltunnel syndrome in my right wrist!!!
After playing for around 2 years I got carpltunnel. It hurt for a long time before I got help!!!

I’ve broken my Good right hand. Now I can focus my drums playing how you play, temporarily. Respect man!
I really liked Metallica and Slipknot, but they were too loud to be played in an apartment. I had to develop an apartment friendly touch for that. I got into jazz to get deep with drums. Then I got back to Rock and Metal with a proper technique and control.
Playing Fast and Quiet was my disability.
Now I'm proud that I can play a gig, where the audience can easily have a conversation without shouting at each other :)
Good thing is, a pair of sticks lasts him twice as long. He’s quality, very impressive and inspiring 👍🏻🤘🏻
This made so much sense for me, being one handed myself... Why was I afraid of drumming in the first place ?!
Adapting and overcoming is key!
Thank you so much. You are honestly a huge inspiration, I've just found you. I used to drum, I had surgery in October 2019 on my neck but it went wrong and my right arm is now paralysed.. Ive not drummed since. This has given me hope and I'm now going to start practising, one armed.
He's faster and more precise with one arm then a lot of people with 2.
Respect man!
this dude has some serious skill! thank to drumeo for letting me find out about him
He sure does - check out more Jack's videos on his own channel: czcams.com/users/jackthomasdrummer 🤘
I'm a one-handed drummer too and it's really hard to be a one-handed drummer but I do it perfectly though your video is awesome you rock🥁🎶🎵🎼😎
You inspired me
The same person XD
@@dustt314 I think the guy was completing the idea in his first comment...
This is very applicable information for any drummer. I commend this man for not giving up his dream and making the world a better place through inspiring others.
As a right handed drummer I have struggled with my "weak" hand for years. Truly inspired by this, and I love your sense of humor. I am left well armed - puns intended - to drop the right and focus on just playing the left on the kit. Excited to attempt this new challenge at my next practice session. Thank you for sharing this.
Imagine if he had two arms 🔥🙌🏾
I have two (mostly) working arms, and I love using all these techniques myself.Much respect from another fellow drummer. This was awesome and any drummer could learn so much from you and this video 🤘🏻
Such a great lesson, and such a great drummer. I have so much respect for way that Jack has developed his drumming style to overcome his physical limitations, and yet is able to express his own voice on the drums. It just goes to show how much of drumming is a mental battle as much as a physical one.
To me, you seem to have a passion in teaching or coaching. I really like your multiple repetitions of how to do things with just one hand or one arm. Bravo !
You are such a great inspiration to someone like me who had a stroke in 2015, so I only have a right hand and right foot to move. I was just starting to play drums before I lost my left arm and left foot movement. I am wanting to learn to play for my church. I have a great friend from Christian band Blood Bought that is helping to follow my dreams in the music world. Thanks for helping my mind think about the most important hits needed without losing to many cymbal hits. I may try to put snare and cymbals all on right side. Ty Rich
Amazing. A very good example of not stopping what you really love to do. Drumming is an art and one have to find a way to continue feeding our souls. Congrats man!
Huge respect to you,Jack🙏🙏🙏
Now this is why i appreciate CZcams...what a find, you are the Man truly helped make my day seeing you play.i grew up playing and my 8yr old nephew just started taking lessons.im subbing right now.and he will be watching all your videos...hey man Thank You soo much.you kill it!!! also your advice is so clear and consise.great teacher man.GOD BLESS.
For as long as I have been playing, this kind of injury has been one of my biggest fears.
No longer. Thank you for being so awesome sir 🖖🏼
An incredible positive attitude, and as many have said before me, you make a lot of us two handed guys look like absolute beginners!! Absolute inspiration, Jack, respect bro!!
This inspires me so much as a drummer and shows the opportunity that anyone has to do great things
When I saw his previous video it was mind blowing not because he has one arm because what he said “ what is your excuse ?”
You are such a positive person I love your energy hope you doing great.🔥🔥 really appreciate inspire me 🙏🏼
This guy is full of spirit and a lot of dedication, this is my inspiration. never give up.
Thanks so much for making this video and sharing your tips and tricks! This is really helping be finally be encouraged to finally trying to play my drums again.. I suffered a stroke in 2012 that paralyzed my left side. I was in a wheelchair for about a year then continued to rehab to get out of my brace. Now I’m still working on my left hand and arm. I’ve taken your advice and rearranged my set and cymbals to allow me to get back to practicing and learning to adapt my technique.
I love his energy and skills, lad is an absolute top geezer
Such a source of inspiration. I’ve been playing for 20 years and had never seen something like this.
Truly inspiration Jack! Thanks for being such a great drummer!
Absolutely inspiring and eye-opening video. Beautiful.
Great video and lesson for everyone! All the best for you in your life! A big hug from Portugal.
I have to say u are amazing / u have put a lot of time & thought into ur drum playing & also have to say I love ur don’t give up attitude/ helps to have a good friend helping with ideas & maybe seeing things u didn’t. Congratulations on staying stubborn & following thru. 😎!!!!!!!!!!!! WILLY CA 🦅🏍⚒☠️⚡️🌎🇺🇸🥁🔥🥁
Your attitude is incredible. I've thought about what I'd do as a drummer if I lost a limb and brother, I'd honestly have no idea. Hats off to you dude. You're altogether a great player, super cool dude and a light of inspiration. 🤘
My respect for this man. This is a very smart and thorough approach. A living proof that there's no limitations when you really want to achieve something
Jack, thanks for sharing!...Continued success and happy drumming!!!
Thank You for that interview. Very inspiring!
This guy is just amazing. All drummers, one or two handed can learn from him, his style and his mentallity. wow.
Two words. Rick. Allen.
But this guy is pretty much God-tier tho 💯
Imagine playing def leopard with one arm and no extra pedals
Rick Allen is the reason I picked up sticks! Love def lep!
There was also the drummer who met Rick Allen after the accident who helped him, he had one arm. He is mostly unknown... Then there was a guy in the 60s who released a few records who had one arm, too (Victor Moulton of The Barbarians) - and of course the very famous Sandy Nelson lost his right leg shortly after his big drumming hit ‘let there be drums’, but he carried on for another 30 years or so.
Bloodhound Gang lyric "The drummer from Def Leppard only has one arm"
Total respect and admiration for this guy, wow! What a way to play with one arm
Those sweep fills you do are absolutely killer. Less is always more. Especially in drumming. You've got a unique blessing in disguise where you've been forced to strip back your playing to bare essentials. The playing doesn't suffer at all. Only benefits imo. I'd love to work with you one of these days. I could write some stuff that'd be right up your alley.
Determination does so much for u in life. U are better than me and I have two hands. Keep up the great work man don’t give up
Amazing!!!
I had an accident 1 year ago and lost the movement and sensibility of my right arm and i really have had a very bad days. This is and inspiration for me, for my life.
I'll try to learn to play the drums.
Thanks to share.
honestly thank you for this video , my right shoulder and arm problem has gotten to the point where i cant play or even write and have limited mobility , this has inspired me to re learn only using my left , keep rocking man , you absolutely smash it
Great tutorial and it’s amazing to see how you adapted. You are brilliant at drumming! Thanks for all you’re great advice and tips
You are truly an inspiration to all the drummers out there. Please keep it up!
truly truly inspirational - love the sweep fill!
I am so inspired by you man. What you can achieve is amazing. Thank you so much for this video.
This is so inspiring! Thank you for sharing all this insight and wisdom. You are amazing
This young man is a blessing to all drummer weather less limbs or all limbs working technique with individual limbs is brilliant!
There's no such thing as limitations when it comes to learning. Even I learned a lot just by watching this video. This guy is inspiring, and just goes to show that there's no excuses when you want to become better at whatever it is you want to do in life.
Never give up, this is what are explaining to all humans !!! TY Bro.....❤
Fantastic!!! Amazing!!! Tips for all of us!!! Thanks Jack Thomas!!!
Love this guy; very inspiring. This goes to show that you can do anything if you put your mind and work into it.
Really cool Thomas, its great to see i'm not the only one who plays with one hand.
I start to play I was 6 years old. But one year later a have my accident. So from there I have to learn how Can I play with one hand because giving up was not an option. So now I'm 38 and play still drums.
I can tell you the most of your tipps and technics i use this nearly same, because this is the only way to play accustic drums with one hand.
Greetings from Switzerland and i hope we see more from you.
Oh this is so helpful as a soon-to be- beginner drummer in their first lesson who has right side hemiplegia and like yourself Jack who is very left side heavy! I hope I can learn to overcome any challenges that come my way. ❤
My brother just shared a video earlier with the man who has 813 pieces in his kit. World Record drum kit.
I sent him this video and said "This is what impresses me!" Godspeed! Thanks for never letting go of your passion, and inspiring the rest of us to keep going no matter what may happen.
Love the way you teach! Totally enjoyed your video!
I just had my elbow fused on Oct. 6th and have been so worried about how I'll play drums now. This is so inspirational. Thank you!
Simply awesome. Keep on drumming.
so much good info! I am still a beginner and am so impressed with you!
I saw this dude play live when I was at an underground punk show in Vancouver, cool to see him on this channel
Great lesson great hearted man no excuse to not persevere. Thankx Jack
Dude your kicks are absolutely crispy clean. Wow
Wonderful!! Keep doing what you love man💪🤘 thanks
The first thing that popped in my mind was the balance thing he talked about at the end... The rest can all be worked out with cheats or technique but you can't cheat physics! Good job man! That sounded great!!
Kudos to you Jack, inspirational stuff!
Great class! What a marvelous attitude on the drums and in life! Inspiration + transpiration = results! Congratulations! 🥁🥁🥁‼️‼️‼️
Simply amazing. This really challenge me to work harder at my drumming
Wow that double bass roll in the beginning was so cool!
Absolutely amazing!
Jack is such an inspiration, and an AWESOME drummer!
This is very awesome I have cp so I only have one hand that I can fully use and partial control over my left but I'm subscribed and you rock just started drums
Thank you for sharing! so incredible so inspirational:) keep up the awesomeness!
Great! Thanks for sharing and being an inspiration . Keep it up! 👍
this guy is so rad!! such an inspiration 💪 makes me wanna work harder to become a better musician! LEGEND!
Huge RESPECT for you man
This video kicks ass, I want to practice doing that roll you did after speaking of the hit hat keeping time. Hat off, and I love your ending line of focus on what you can do not what you cant this is super important.
Jack, you are huge, man. You are PHENOMENAL. Father blessings to u, brother!
Awesomeness! You are a work of art brother! God bless!
All these insights and technique are so useful and inspiring!!!!
You are a beast of a man, dude! Your drumming is unbelievable!
Fantastic drumming..loving those sweeps.😁😁
As a 2 arm drummer I had still found use in all of this. I especially like the “crossstick” move.
Mad respect. You are phenomenal!
Awesome bro, Rock on!
This is absolutely glorious!
Man ,God Bless you this is a real example to live
Absolutely amazing.
Absolutely brilliant my friend! 👍🏻😉
Brutal, I've learned a lot today! Thank you so much 👍
Great spirit! Liked a lot how he uses the kick on fills, and the example on the hats pedal to groove was sweet, also the crossed stick. I'd humbly recommend the obvious, finish your fills with a quarter note on the 4, it adds a nice space and lets you go back comfortably to the next cymbal. Hope I worded it okay. Greetings from Colombia.
すごい。。本当によくひとつのてでめ続けようって立ち直れたと思います。本当にすごいです。
His playing make things easy for mixing since he´s not hitting a cymbal and a drum at the same time. Anyway, he´s truly skilled. Very inspirational.
Muchas Felicitaciones Jack, me alerga mucho ver personas con tu carisma y sonriza a pesar de las dificultades de la vida, bien hecho, animo y adelante, Dios te Bendiga...
