  • First time trying Chinese food in Chongqing, China!
Chongqing is known as a spicy city, maybe the spiciest city in China.
Everywhere we go, we smelled that famous spicy fragrance.
We went to Bayi Food Street, famous for street stalls and food courts selling numerous types of Chongqing delicacies.
Is China dangerous? We think the food is! Haha, food so spicy, we thought we almost die in China. Joking!
We are so glad to be in China. Yes, the Canadian government put up a travel advisory warning against visiting China. But China is not what the western media shows you. Come, and see it with your own eyes.

The gooey food you tried is called "Shaopi", which is made from sweet potato starch. Do you remember the uncle who was making noodles in front of his restaraunt in the last video? Yes, that noodle was also made from sweet potato. It provides the most gooey texture among all the natural starches. So we have lots of dish made from sweet potato starch in China.

I have found that in America and other western countries, these restaurants would really tone down the spice for non-Chinese people. I don't typically find that is the case in China, as they love watching us sweat, suffer, and cry. In a fun way, of course. I love spicy and sour food, though, so it's great that there are tons of spicy food destinations in China.

I‘m from Shanghai and a lot of Shanghaineses are just like me, having zero tolerance with spicy food. When I went to Chongqing last time I had a very bad diarrhea even I demanded food very time with the smallest amount of spice in it.
But other than local cuisines, there are still plenty of food without any spice to choose from in Chongqing. But you had to try some local food if you paid all the money for your air tickets and accommodation to get there, right? That's how I got my diarrhea.

@@constantineding8700 I’ve been eating spice heavy foods my whole life so Chongqing was a paradise for me. Then you must try the hotpots in Chongqing. The best in the world.
There is another hotpot capital in china, which is Chengdu, about 3 hour train ride from Chongqing.
I've been told that a lot of hotpot lovers in Chengdu take high-speed train to Chongqing at weekends to eat the Chongqing style hotpot for lunch and come back the same day. But no one in Chongqing would go to Chengdu for the same reason.
So judging from that, I think Chongqing hotpot is the better one.
But a little caveat, when they let you choose the level of spiciness, do not choose any level above median spicy! @@Kagrenackle

微辣. A little spicy. Our first meal in Chongqing, we asked for 'not spicy'. The noodles lady said 'we Chongqing people don't know how to cook non spicy, so it won't taste good. How about "wei la", a little spicy. So, that's our go-to phrase in Chongqing, "wei la". 😂

八一路, near where you stayed in JiaFengBei, is a famous food street. We went to the same eatery where you bought that pan fried dumplings. That particular eatery is Chongqing Internet famous, may be because most of the cooks are young, handsome guys? The dumplings were great and we were there almost every day during our 8 days stay. We miss Chongqing food, especially the 'small noodles', those dumplings, etc.. Can't wait to go back in April. 😁

The gooey thing at 18 mins is made of sweet potato starch. The pink diced vege is most likely pickled radish . Brown one is tofu skin . Lots of root vegetable can be grated w water , strained n the sediment contains lots of starch, which can be sundried . Starch then mixed with water to boil then can be turned into all shapes n forms . Noodles are common.
