This does an excellent job showing WHY humans are constantly turning to Chaos. The Imperium is honestly just as terrible as the rest of the universe. It's all a matter of personal perspective now.

I remember a story in an old games workshop magazine about a space marine who tries to infiltrate Huron Blackheart’s legions. The part that stuck with me was the ending where Huron promises to make him a hero to be proud of. The marine wakes up,to find himself in darkness and realizes he can’t move but he can feel cables attached to his body and is left to wonder of Blackheart had him put in a chaos dreadnought or just entombed him and launched him into space.
Oh,.this is truly a fantastic monologue.

working in retail got me acting like
I think a really cool idea for a story/videogame in the 40k universe would be if it was based on the perspectives of two space marines. One loyalist and the other chaos. And it took you through their lives from their childhoods, how they were inducted into their legions, what life in their legions were like, the many battles the fought, all building up to the confrontation between the two as the final boss. I feel like the legions that would fit this idea best would be the Black Templars and Word Bearers.

Not really. Even if all the oppression and slavery doesn't happen, the Chaos gods will still find ways to turn people into traitors. The more a human has, the more they want. This time it was freedom. When they have freedom, they want the P next. When they have P, they want power and wealth to get more P. The problem isn't the Imperium, it's humanity.
Through Khorne we are Strong. Through Nurgle we are Persistent. Through Slaanesh we are Emboldened. Through Tzeentch we are Englightened. Through Chaos we are Undivided. The dregs of the machine know not what they live without. We will show them...

ultimately that's the choice, a select few, and i mean VERY select few, have the ability, potential, and opportunity to elevate themselves, and therefor their descendants, in the hierarchy of the Imperium, but Chaos? sure you will inevitably go the way of The Emperor and lose all traces of humanity, but earn your chosen Lord's favor enough, and what makes you YOU may be preserved, protected from the final decay and the loss of self, and all of this is laid before you when they offer the hand to join, they admit that yes, the majority fall and suffer the death of their individual self, but a blessed few rise above, and are the champions of their Lord, and that goal can be reached by any follower, from the lowest soldier, to the mightiest Chaos Marine or 'Ascended' Psyker, the path is there, all you need is the will and skill to navigate it, before the death on your heels catches you
