LITERATURE - Charles Darwin

  • Darwin liked to say he had thought of calling his book “the Ascent of Man” - but that that would suggest some idea of progress. Rather what he wanted to do was show that despite the obvious technical advances of past centuries modern people were still at the same moral level, or perhaps slightly worse, than their remote ancestors.

"It is completely understandable that we are often maddened by what might be called ‘normal’ humanity. The way in which emotion so regularly triumphs over careful reasoning; the power of group loyalty, even when the group doesn’t seem to deserve much devotion; the vast mechanisms of status-seeking that drive so much excess consumption; widespread selfishness and indifference to the greater needs of more distant others. And we can find ourselves - in the privacy of our heads, or in the occasional late-night outburst - railing against the fools and idiots who (so unfortunately) seem to occupy so many of the prominent places of power, wealth and influence..."

Having a director observing you, an editor to hide yours mistakes, a sound technician to make you sound better etc... Only 0.1% of teachers have such top-notch assistance.

@@thoreau8843 absolutely. He does appear to be quite talented in public speaking though. And experience etc etc obviously plays into it. But even watching his public speeches, some are like 2 hours long or something, shows how he is naturally very captivating and eloquent, as there are no sound engineers, editors etc in those situations. I highly recommend watching those talks. I have adhd and it’s rare that I can pay attention for that long but he had no trouble keeping my focus.

I have always felt that for all the achievements we made as a civilization thanks to our sapience and intelligence, those qualities also allowed our worst traits and baser instincts to be expressed in far worse and far more creative ways than non-sapient and unintelligent animals could. And while animals can be excused for lacking the agency to choose good or evil in following their base nature, the fact that we could but still follow our base natures anyways do make it much worse because we could had chose otherwise with our free will and self-awareness.

Then how can one determine origin of animals that came to be many thousands years before with out being able to recreate how they came to be.

The concept of bacterial resistance is the same thing as survival of the fittest. King Solomon meant that what is simply is, which is true. He said nothing about biological organisms.

Muhammad was a war lord that married a child and was "hearing voices". If he lived today, we would probably offer him some medical help.

@anil karameti I will answer your question. Assuming that Jesus existed that is, which is very questionable. They did not lie. When it came to the history of man, they simply did not know what they were talking about. Still, I cannot blame Jesus and Muhammad for talking scientific nonsense, they were just people of their time, having the limited knowledge of their time. Evolution is the basis of all modern biology. Hardly any serious scientist denies it and it is being taught in almost every university.

What are you even talking about? A person who does not know what he is talking about is ignorant, not a liar. There is a difference between those two concepts. Open a Lexicon and find the difference. And when it comes to evolution, it is not true because it is taught in universities. It is taught in universities because it is true. It is the one and only theory that explains biodiversity. It is proven right time and time again and there is not a single observation that disproves it. If only creationists understood it before they spite out their nonsense, we would live in a better world.

@anil karameti the people you call prophets are either fictional characters or fallible men, products of their time having the limited knowledge of their time. Their opinions are completely useless in scientific conversation. So are the books you mention.

@anil karameti Jesus, probably fictional character. Something like Spiderman. Muhammad, fallible man, and a very bad person IMO. Theory of evolution, inescapable scientific fact. Sorry if reality does not conform to your favorite folklore. Have a nice evening.
