LITERATURE - Charles Darwin

- Darwin liked to say he had thought of calling his book “the Ascent of Man” - but that that would suggest some idea of progress. Rather what he wanted to do was show that despite the obvious technical advances of past centuries modern people were still at the same moral level, or perhaps slightly worse, than their remote ancestors.

"It is completely understandable that we are often maddened by what might be called ‘normal’ humanity. The way in which emotion so regularly triumphs over careful reasoning; the power of group loyalty, even when the group doesn’t seem to deserve much devotion; the vast mechanisms of status-seeking that drive so much excess consumption; widespread selfishness and indifference to the greater needs of more distant others. And we can find ourselves - in the privacy of our heads, or in the occasional late-night outburst - railing against the fools and idiots who (so unfortunately) seem to occupy so many of the prominent places of power, wealth and influence..."

“A moral being is one who is capable of reflecting on his past actions and their motives - of approving of some and disapproving of others.”
- Charles Darwin.
I missed both Alain's voice and this kind of videos SO MUCH! Welcome back. ❤️
+1
You and me both.
Yes that was the thing that l want to say either . Thank you Christina .
Yeah I miss his Voice too it’s so calming, reassuring and knowing I often mostly listen to the older videos just because of it
@@kevinlawrence7289 I know right, I have watched every single video but I too used to go back to the old ones because of this
We’re back baby finally! Please make more videos on certain philosophers and writers please. I miss the old days of watching your videos on Voltaire, Camus, Foucault and countless others, they were really exceptional. Please make more like this in the future!
I know right, I have watched every single video but I go back to the old ones because of this. I like very much that this channel makes you think more deeply about life in all its aspects.
You read my mind.✨✨
YES. It's teh best thing on CZcams. Hope they do Victor Hugo next.
If only Alain’s voice and eloquence could be cloned. I wish all tutors and professors had his skill of explaining complex concepts into simple bite sized stories.
I successfully mimicked his voice and my audience loled in awe. I'm not even native English speaker 😂
@@100schlingensief6 Impressive! Please share
He is amazingly articulate, no doubt. But we must remember it's much easier (or less difficult) to be a teacher when you have a huge team like he has. Having a director observing you, an editor to hide yours mistakes, a sound technician to make you sound better etc... Only 0.1% of teachers have such top-notch assistance.
Voices are so important to me - his is a beautifully modulated voice, smooth as silk and clear as a (modulated) bell. There’s so much ugliness in certain strong, harsh accents and I find I can’t understand many people, including my son!
@@thoreau8843 absolutely. He does appear to be quite talented in public speaking though. And experience etc etc obviously plays into it. But even watching his public speeches, some are like 2 hours long or something, shows how he is naturally very captivating and eloquent, as there are no sound engineers, editors etc in those situations. I highly recommend watching those talks. I have adhd and it’s rare that I can pay attention for that long but he had no trouble keeping my focus.
I've missed the literature and philosophy shorts. More please!!
School of life always helps me understand life and people better
"Yep!."
Thank you Sonia. It's what we were founded to do!
@@theschooloflifetv ❤️❤️❤️
It’s good to hear Alain back. He has such a unique voice that I really enjoy listening to.
I missed Alan’s narrations so much, it just feels right
Im so glad Alens voice is back to his channel ive missed it ❤️
This channel offers some of the best and most objective videos on individual historical figures, especially political and social theorists and others. I am glad to see these videos return.
How I have missed these old-school videos from you. MORE PLEASE!!!
How deeply I wish I could chat with Alain. So nice to hear his voice again, brilliant video!
Can you do more videos on how to handle and manage depression and anxiety?
Also advice for teens becoming young adults, like me?
Adulting is terrifying
School of life videos are never the same without Alain!
Is this a new one or a reupload? Because first of all i missed Alain de Botton's voice and how he says things... is he still touring? We need more of his videos please...
I have to read this book. I've been wondering about the state of humans for some time now. Charles' explanations seem right on the money.
I love your voice ALAIN, please come back and narrate all the videos.
Yohoo! I missed Alain's voice! 😭😭🥰🥰
I was so hoping Alain de Botton to be the narrator again..... With all due respect to the female narrator who has a wonderful voice. To me TSL is Alain.
Finally Alain is back after a year of recess in narration! We have you Alain
Alain de Botton . . . YES thank you for returning to
share. Like others I agree to the mention of the desire
for return to the olll dayz type of S of L videos.
I would appreciate the individualized videos focusing
on select philosophers + writers of impact.
This is just what I needed this morning after reading the morning papers online. Thank you.
Finally, more videos like this please!
I really missed these types of videos, please make more of them!
Oh that long-awaited voice on a new lesson. Just splendid.
Being “liked” feels like a matter of life and death” - and I thought I was just insecure! Thank you!
Hermoso vídeo!❤❤❤❤
Alain de Botton!! Happy to hear from you again!!!
This is the voice I missed for so long, I couldn’t get myself to watch any other videos.
so happy to hear your voice on video again!
More videos about literature. They're so inspiring.
I have always felt that for all the achievements we made as a civilization thanks to our sapience and intelligence, those qualities also allowed our worst traits and baser instincts to be expressed in far worse and far more creative ways than non-sapient and unintelligent animals could. And while animals can be excused for lacking the agency to choose good or evil in following their base nature, the fact that we could but still follow our base natures anyways do make it much worse because we could had chose otherwise with our free will and self-awareness.
To have come up with the things written in On The Origins of Species through observation and thought is absolutely amazing. What a fantastically intelligent scientist he was.
No he doesn't show how he is a good scientist just like he isn't the one to think humanity hasn't gotten any better.
King Solomon said there is nothing new under the sun, for what has been, is what will be, and what is done, will be what is done.
Then how can one determine origin of animals that came to be many thousands years before with out being able to recreate how they came to be.
This type of thinking is to imagine your own version guess what your mind created then tell everyone this is how things work.
@@jessicashaw7143 The genes that are passed on to the next generation have a higher probability of increasing survivability. Therefore, over long periods of time, the characteristics of animals change. The change is slow in multicellular organisms, but if you observe bacterial colonies, you can see the same effect take place extremely rapidly. The concept of bacterial resistance is the same thing as survival of the fittest. King Solomon meant that what is simply is, which is true. He said nothing about biological organisms.
@@jessicashaw7143 He did not “guess” anything; he based his conclusions on evidence and observation. Evolution is an undeniable fact that has been proven to be true since Darwin’s magnum opus.
Another Gem -- I love these brief and terse educational videos. Enlightening as well. Thanks.
Omg he’s finally back 😩😩😩. Where was he??????? Love this man 🥲
Scratch the base of the spine where our tails used to be, especially while sitting on the throne and tell me what you feel?. Our greatest impediment is our biological structuring versus our mental self awareness.
ALAIN IS BACK! 🥳
Finally: the survival of the fittest voice of guidance on CZcams does ring true!🙉🍃
Good to see that sound is back. Please make some new videos on political philosophies.
Alain back again! Dream come true!
Alain ist wieder da.
They need to teach these things in schools
Finally! We have been waiting for these video and Alain narration again 😍
Happy to hear de Button... Superb narrator
Finally a video on philosophical figures, Ive missed this!
So did Vonnegut. At least, he wrote a book about the idea: Galapagos.
When your ancestors evolved a few times so that you now exist
Might I suggest a video about Alfred North Whitehead's process philosophy? 🙂
Excelentes ideas. Hemos avanzado tecnológicamente pero moralmente o nos estancamos o vamos en decaída.
@The School of Life can you make Video about Ibn Khaldun theory
Sous-titres français: «Descent» ne se traduit pas par «décent», mais par origine.
Love all your videos. Love and hugs from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷💕
Absolutely so clear, true & easy to understand.
More intellectual education videos please!!
You guys should stop google translating the video titles for every country. I'm german and it shows me the video titles in german. They are undecipherable most of the time. If someone had trouble understanding english, they would not watch the video in the first place. The german title of this video roughly translates to "The decent of the human"(yes decent, not descent) and I didn't know what that's supposed to mean until I watched the video.
Welcome Alain!
Please make a video on Abu 'Ali al-Husayn ibn Sina, who is better known in Europe by the Latinized name “Avicenna.” He is probably the most significant philosopher in the Islamic tradition and arguably the most influential philosopher of the pre-modern era.
Alain back. And so am I. We missed you.
"Who we will always be." Despite the circumstantial changes to our reality. It's almost as though we were created to be this way...
Alain is back! Now I just need to find Lua Veli's comment.
I need the speaker’s official email?
I think it's strange how very few people have commented on the subject matter of the video. it has to do something, I believe, with the descent of man.
TBH I miss Alain's narrations. This is brilliant.
Keep posting guys we miss you!
Loved these kinds of clips.
1:14 haha had to call the man out on the barnacles, did you?
Alain is back!!!!!
"The nineteenth-century naturalist?" Brilliant understatement.
How about - first person to convincingly express the most important discovery ever?

I just wanted to share my feeling of content towards this video's time stamp.
Utterly D💡ful ~ And super to hear your voice on ✨
So are you saying we are hard-wired to eat sugar, be anxious about our group status, want a partner and children and always be emotional over rational? And there's nothing we can do about it?
right thinking requires hard work and feeling the accompanying negative emotions. to not think and just go about life is easier. ignorance is bliss after all
sometimes it even implicates your own ground thereby requires some alienation from your own tribe...not easy..
Yay, Alain again!! Thank you for this video!! 🎉🎉
Shout-out to my boy Charles Darwin, he was a top G, we would had good conversations, a real one talking to another
Look up CD’s 1st job, prob right on target
Darwin revolutionised not only our understanding of the natural world, but how we, as a species, see ourselves. A 'G' indeed!
Isn’t it the “Theory” of evolution, not the “fact” of evolution? I’m supposed to believe that these so called scientists know, beyond a shadow of doubt, what happened millions of years ago 👍🏻 and Darwin knew all about the beginning of the human race back in the 1800’s. Totally believable 😂
@@theschooloflifetv He was an inbreeding eugenicist, don’t forget that SMALL fact brother.
Can you make a video about Jorge Luis Borges?
The descent of man or
How to remove the smell.
He's not the only one.
I do too.
Many great legends left the world because the world would discover them all
I hope you continue with analysing literature and philosophy books like you used to do. I stopped following you when you shifted few years ago.
Yay. Alain is back.
Please add subtitles 😊
YAY! SO HAPPY TO SEE PHILOSOPHY AGAIN.
Welcome back old man!
Hey its Alain. Haven't heard his voice in a long time.
Dude, for the longest time I was here thinking that they had a disagreement and took different paths. I missed him.
@@javierb.4447 👍🏾
Wow, this video!
Exactly: 0:40
Super interesting!
As Tom Waits put it “the higher the monkey can climb, the more you see his tail”….
I miss Alain's voice so much
He was right for sure. Got a headache looking at today’s culture of business needs first before basic human needs.
Miss hearing your voice Alan
Make a video on procrastination
No
They'll get around to it
"could you please make a video on procrastination?"
We have several articles about procrastination on our website, as well as a whole book on the subject, available from our shop: www.theschooloflife.com/shop/tsol-press-procrastination/

Alain!
I think so too.
Alain. The GOAT is back.
We love you alain 😀
Self-interest more than listen to other people opinion can make us to be more difficult,
Rather than investing on ourselves we invest on commodities? Seems like real descend of man.
Fast uplode this type videos sir
I have mixed feelings about the theory of evolution. Sometimes I feel that it is so counter intuitive that it required a true genious to figure it out. And then, I feel it is so intuitive that I am surprised why people did not figure it out earlier. We consciously use selective breading for thousands of years anyway.
@anil karameti Moses is a fictional character. He belongs in the same category as Batmal. Jesus probably never existed. And if he did, there was nothing metaphysical avout him. Muhammad was a war lord that married a child and was "hearing voices". If he lived today, we would probably offer him some medical help.
That being said, evolution is an inescapable fact of population mechanics. I kindly suggest you to try to understand it.
@anil karameti I will answer your question. Assuming that Jesus existed that is, which is very questionable. They did not lie. When it came to the history of man, they simply did not know what they were talking about. Still, I cannot blame Jesus and Muhammad for talking scientific nonsense, they were just people of their time, having the limited knowledge of their time. Evolution is the basis of all modern biology. Hardly any serious scientist denies it and it is being taught in almost every university.
What are you even talking about? A person who does not know what he is talking about is ignorant, not a liar. There is a difference between those two concepts. Open a Lexicon and find the difference. And when it comes to evolution, it is not true because it is taught in universities. It is taught in universities because it is true. It is the one and only theory that explains biodiversity. It is proven right time and time again and there is not a single observation that disproves it. If only creationists understood it before they spite out their nonsense, we would live in a better world.
@anil karameti the people you call prophets are either fictional characters or fallible men, products of their time having the limited knowledge of their time. Their opinions are completely useless in scientific conversation. So are the books you mention.
@anil karameti Jesus, probably fictional character. Something like Spiderman. Muhammad, fallible man, and a very bad person IMO. Theory of evolution, inescapable scientific fact. Sorry if reality does not conform to your favorite folklore. Have a nice evening.
I've been outside, humans are absolutely regressing
Too short... should have been a bit more descriptive
