Myslím, že výraz "zlaté české ručičky" není pouze o manuální zručnosti, ale také o schopnosti umět improvizovat, umět si poradit. Například "Nemám dláto? Nevadí. Zbrousím si šroubovák a ono to tím taky půjde." :)

It’s true. My wife’s cousin can fix anything. In his broken English, he says “I Czech man, you American bankéř, I do it.” Good enough for me. I move out of the way, he puts together/fixes/fine tunes everything. I say, “Děkuju.”
Ha! So it is true! I think resourcefulness is definitely a Czech trait, and something Americans let fall by the wayside with specialization.
There's a story from WWII, during the siege of Tobruk. Among the other defenders there was also a Czechoslovak infantry batallion. The story says that if something broke down and nobody else was able to repair it, bring it to the Czechoslovaks and they'll fix it.
Sounds like the current day Czechs have a reputation to live up to!

As for the golden Czech hands-not sure if this belongs to a YT comment, however since you are becoming Czech you should probably know this and you can as well read it here (if you will). The origins of the saying go well into 19th century. You gotta understand that merely two hundred years ago this nation was on the verge of disappearance, it could and-if what follows didn't happen-would simply dissolve in the German speaking majority around it.
However a handful of great men did not want this to happen and they began to fight for the Czech nation to survive, starting with the most important thing, the Czech language, and together with it the spread of education among people living in Czech part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. Their success was immense, such that hardly could have been imagined when they had started. For example, in the last twenty or so years of the 19th century illiteracy was virtually non-existent in Czech countries; in those times even the most developed western European countries counted the ratio of illiterate population in tens of per-cents. (This however has even deeper roots: in the first half of the 15th century, during the Hussite uprising, one Italian cardinal complained bitterly that every Czech farmer's wife knows and can read the Bible better than most of Italian clergy.)
One of the results and consequences of that was big number of entrepreneurs, scientists, engineers &c., who made the Czech countries an industrial heart of the A.-H. empire. It even led to such curious facts like this one: the first country that managed manufacturing battleship triple gun turrets was neither Britain nor USA nor France nor Germany… It was done in landlocked Czechia in Plzeň Škoda factory for A.H. battleships of Tegetthoff class. Simply put, in those days the Czech engineering “ruled the world”, sort of. Not exclusively, of course, but it was definitely top notch. (If your Czech is up to it, I'd suggest some plays of Divadlo Járy Cimrmana, where they present some of it in the way of the very best Czech tradition of mocking ourselves.)
During communist times this history and tradition was one of the few assets bolsheviks could exploit, and exploit it they did. The golden years of Czech industry and engineering were in the past and slowly getting overshadowed with corruption, lack of solidity, carelessness and so on, typical signs of “centrally planned and controlled economy”. However the memory lived and presented itself in-among other ways-this proverb of “golden Czech hands”-

gratuluju, další krůček k domestikaci, další skok k češství 👍 já tvořím jazyky, jeden trvá vytvořit i dekádu, na jednom dělám už 27 let. mám také "zlaté české ručičky"? 😋 a teprve na konci mi došlo, že "Fushka" je vlastně "fuška" čiliž "melouch" neboli práce mimo pracovní dobu (a často za peníze či protislužbu pro někoho jiného).
Souhlas s Michal Duska, už vám chybí opravdu jen chalupa. A věřím, že kutit na chalupě a pěstovat vlastní zeleninu, ovoce, květiny, by jednak byla aktivita, která by bavila vás a bylo by z toho jistě mnoho dalších báječných vlogů. Jděte do toho 👍

Hello from Turkiye dear Jen! I am a 22-year-old molecular biology student who will be interning at the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague. Starting in July, it will last for two months. Even though it is not for a long time, I am attracted to the life in Prague, Czech culture, and language. I really enjoyed this one. It was informative and I liked having Honza do some of the narration. A friend of mine, Mirek Trejtnar, has a puppet workshop i Prague for students who want to learn the art of carving. This helped me to understand why the Czechs make such good puppets. Thanks. Vždy jsem to rčení chápal tak, že "zlaté ručičky" nemá zdaleka každý, ale že se mezi Čechy najde dost šikovných řemeslníků, mechaniků, konstruktérů, nebo umělců, kteří dokáží vytvořit něco ve vysoké kvalitě, nebo hodnotě, nebo novým způsobem. Rozhodně si myslím, že se nevztahuje všeobecně na domácí kutilství. Zde to častěji spíše připomíná postupy ze seriálu "A je to".

Část pravdy o zlatých českých ručičkách se pojí k technické revoluci ještě za Rakouska-Uherska. Na našem území vznikly jedny z nejlepších dílen motoristického průmyslu.
Vyrábali ste aj autá, vlaky, lietadlá od začiatku ich éry. Niet divu že vás rakúšania nechceli pustiť z R-U. Bez vás by R-U veľa neznamenalo.
Skvělý podnikatelský záměr pro "mladé volšové:)Pražáky(spíš cizince) ". Ještě bych si to dovedl představit v Brně někde okolo technologického parku v KP. Je tam spousta lidí co čumí jen do tabulek a pročistit hlavu tímto způsobem by určitě uvítali. Pro běžného Čecha je to spíš úsměvná záležitost a starší generace to nebude vůbec chápat. Zlaté české ručičky znamená něco podobného jako co Čech to muzikant. Vzniklo to na přelomu 19 a 20 kdy spousta lidí z Čech odcházela za prací do Německa a západní Evropy. Pěkně zachycené je to v seriálu cirkus Humberto. Za Rakouska Uherska se velká část průmyslu koncentrovala u nás a tím byla dána šikovnost a zkušenost místních lidí. Dnes je to právě naopak. Lidská činnost se přesunula do služeb a schopnost řemesla se logicky vytratila. Takže zlaté české ručičky už dávno neplatí, protože ekonomika se proměnila. Takže ano, máte pravdu. Jen si to nalháváme:))))) jako dalších spousta věcí......
Asi to bude i staletími průmyslové výroby, od tkalcovských stavů, bicyklů, motorek a šicích strojů, které se zde vyráběly a v Rumunsku třeba ne. Máme to "v krvi"
Domníváte se, že v Rumunsku je zásadně méně zručných lidí než u nás? Z čeho vaše domněnka vychází?

I am quite impressed. We used to have a graded workshop class in Junior High in Praha. We made small crafts like a wooden cutting board or used a sowing machine to make accessories or even took a cooking course. Loved it!

Hey there Jen and the gang, my Czech girlfriend and I run an art studio in Prague 7, we have a big table for students to draw and an area for oil painters too. We've recently had small groups of Ukrainian refugees and their parents and grandparents to sit and watch, their works are extraudinary. You're welcome to come give it a try too, start with quick sketches, then acyrlic paint, leading up to oil paints.. I can leave some details here for sure.. Cheers and keep up the good work..

I will becoming to Prague next week then to the Zelezny Brod area to visit the “Golden Hands” of the many talented glass workers in that area. There is a high school there for students to learn all about the glass arts. I am enjoying watching Dream Prague!

My grandfather, who served in WWI, told me about an Austrian officer instructing his soldiers to confiscate from the Czechs every piece of wire, nail or anything, or they could make a machine gun out of it. So, the Austrians also recognized the golden qualities of Czech hands, or my grandfather, being a Czech, was just talking up the Czechs.
When my workshop teacher told my mom that I was going to become a good laborer (“Bude z něho dobrý dělník.”), it was a good thing in his mind, but my mom was offended to the core by the suggestion that her son would become ‘only’ a laborer. It was during the socialist paradise of the sixties, so my mom had to bite her tongue and only voice her discontent when she got home. To the teacher, she replied that I had “zlatý český ručičky.” Her answer may have saved the family from the Gulag or something for all I know.
Last but not least, I love your t-shirt! The message is that in Prague, a dog’s life is a dream, right? Tobik’s life, that is.

I'm trying to picture a Czech making a machine gun out of nails and wire. 😂 I can imagine how your mom would have found that insulting, but it's really just depends on how you take it. I think my best skills are manual, so if someone said that to me, I'd be flattered! The t-shirt was designed for us! It's part of a collection we will be releasing soon! And yes, Prague is a dream life for dogs. :)
@@DreamPrague The machine gun may be a stretch, since all they did was breaking their spoons and sharpening the handle to make it to a knife, then using wooden handless for both parts. I can only imagine the Austrian officer's shock when, after confiscating knives from the Czechs, he saw them armed with full sets of silverware. What was next, a table cloth? :-)
My mom took offense since in her mind I was going to med school like my dad or to anything at university level. I wanted to be a car mechanic I think, but you needed a higher scores for that than for engineering, where I ended up. Go figure!
If the t-shirt comes out before the end of June, I may be able to pick one up on my visit to Prague. Keep me posted, please! With Tobik on my t-shirt and a Dream Prague logo I would be the fashionista of the Half Moon Marina on Shelter Island. I built my house only with my family members. A lot of people do it like me in the Czech Republic, especially in villages. Hard work and lot of improvisation :)

The need to qualify everything to the nth degree was brought over from North America. It never used to be done in CZ. I remember 25 years ago we had friends visit (Canada) from CZ and they thought the qualification thing was hilarious...."this is the biggest ball of yarn in south eastern Ontario" and such. It's amazing to me much Czechs just keep adopting North American attitudes and think that it's always been that way.
Prostě krása Američanka co mě připomíná jak je ta naše země krásná a jako žádná jiná i s nějakou tou chybkou. S každým videem snad miluji mou zemi ještě více a to už sem ji miloval převelice předtím. Akorát by to chtělo lepší doktory, ale to je možná problém jen v mém regionu a ani zde nejsou všichni špatní.

There is a workshop on Smíchovká náplavka - Dok 16, with all kinds of woodworking machines, sowing machines, glues and awesome people working there. I often come to ask questions like "I would like to join these two pieces of wood in this angle, how should I do it" and I always get helpful answers. But thats more of a place, where you go to work on your project (fixing or remodeling something). All you need to have is a library card and montérky :)

There is a Czech building set popular since the 1920s called "MERKUR" you can try (inspired by meccano, but metric and better for kids as it is lighter). Many Czech kids grew up playing with it. Including Czech-born Nobel prize laureate Grunberg who said it lead him to become a physicist and it was used by Wichterle, the inventor co modern contact lenses who made the first ones on a machine made out of Merkur.
We say: "Czech golden hands and germany precision." Love our Honza!
A good combo.
To finish it, paint it with "lodní lak" from Luxol. It is a see-through lacquer made for boats, so it will survive watering of your plants for generations.

Hrozně mě pobavilo přirovnání že tohle je nejstarší stojící most na tomhle břehu...pokud je ten most stojící, pak funguje pro oba břehy a je tak nejstarší stojící na oné řece, přece 😉😂😂😂
Pochopil jsem to tak, že není přímo přes to Labe, ale že je třeba na přítoku, který do Labe přitéká zleva. Na nějakém přítoku zprava může být třeba i most starší, ale ten se nepočítá. Asi, jako když se mluví o nejstarší univerzitě severně od Alp.

Fuj! Věděla jsem, že jsme koupili špatnou. Doufám, že to ještě vydrží!
Pravý Čech by si nekoupil drahé speciální lepidlo, ale použil nějaké univerzální (silikon, chemopren, mamuta apod.), kterým by pak opravil ještě spoustu dalších věcí.
Zlaté české ručičky je něco jako "MacGyver". Většina kutilů světa, když něco nefunguje/rozbije se, dojdou do obchodu a koupí náhradní díl. Doma ho vymění a je opraveno. Češi si v jistá léta tak trochu zvykli všechno spravit "doma na koleni" z toho, co se zrovna najde. Můj otec vždy říkal: "Neznám slovo - nejde."

Unfortunately you cleared up your license plate. I would have one not to be annoyed about who has na Audi. For explanation: I keep 150 on highways with my Dacia. Many Audi and BMW drivers take it personally if Dacia overtakes them. If I knew it is not the case, I might be a little bit more polite in case of "not-so-understandable" behaviour. Sorry, I came from DK and found out 1) Can not drink, like a Danish and 2) Can not drive, like a Danish.
And our DIY comes from "lack of services" in communist times. I can fix some parts on my car, but still I prefer to let a professional do it here. Last car I was able to fix with standard tools is Favorit.
Btw. I am interesting in woodwork without saw. The old way. I have tried to put down a hut built using jist an axe and it was "tough". Axe cut wood is much stronger, than sawed one.

Fuška je dobrý nápad.
Zlaté české ručičky....myslím, že na tom něco bude. Pokud tomu chcete rozumět, co to znamená, tak musíte jít trochu do historie nepříliš vzdálené. Doba, kdy zemi českou řídil bolševik z Moskvy... Smutná doba, kdy svět šel kupředu a místní lid na to moh jen koukat (pokud ho při tom nenachytali). Peněz nebylo, avšak touha něco mít byla silná. Proto si lidé byli nuceni spoustu věcí vyrobit, pokud se něco polámalo, tak opravit, pokud se něco nedalo sehnat, tak něčím nahradit a tak dále..... V obchodech bylo tak málo věcí, že spoustu si lidé vyráběli doma.....ženy šily oblečení na děti, tátové vyráběli vše, na co jim nuzné platy nestačily, aby si to mohli koupit. Rozbilo se rádio? - oprav si to, Nejede ti auto? (pokud jej vůbec měl) - oprava je drahá- oprav si to sám! Na vesnicích pánové vyráběli traktůrky a veškeré jejich příslušenství.... Kdo stavěl rodinný dům, tak se naučil být : instalatér, elektrikář, stolař, zámečník, svářeč, truhlář, zedník, kamnář, plynař, sklenář, pokrývač, podlahář, malíř a tak dále... protože aby si na to mohl pozvat odborníka, na to neměl peníze. Také spoustu nářadí si mnohdy musel umět nejdřív vyrobit. Pro ty účely dokonce vycházely i různé časopisy, kde byly návody, jak si danou věc vyrobit ( například "Udělej si- urob si sám", "Amatérské rádio" a mnoho dalších). - Ne jako vybavená dílna ve vašem videu. tu motorovou pilu, hoblovačku, pásovou pilu, svářečku, frézku, soustruh... tu když chtěl někdo mít, protože ji potřeboval, tak tu si nemohl koupit - jednak na to neměl peníze, a když náhodou měl, tak nebyla nikde v obchodech..a půjčovny nářadí neexistovaly. Proto si to lidé nejdřív museli vyrobit....a pak teprve s tím pracovat. Já osobně jsem tohle všechno musel také zvládnout... dětem jsem na vánoce vyráběl hračky, synkovi, když byl malý, tak jsem vyrobil motorovou tříkolku (se kterou se v jeho 3 letech dostal až do televizního vysílání).... vše se vyrábělo v malinkých dílničkách, které byly součástí každého domku... naučil jsem se šít na šicím stroji, šil jsem kožené bundy, naučil jsem se pracovat s laminátem - vyráběl jsem kapoty a opravoval laminátové karoserie, 30 let jsem maloval airbrush .... reklamní malba a malba na automobily helmy a motocykly, naučil jsem se pracovat na frézce, soustruhu, pracoval jsem i v kovárně, klempírně... Pokud se něco rozbilo, tak mě to vždy donutilo danou věc rozebrat, pochopit jak to funguje a následně opravit... pokud bylo něco nutné, tak to i vyrobit... Nedovedete si ani ve snu představit, co musel našinec všechno umět, aby se alespoň trochu přiblížil tomu, co bylo jinde ve světě běžné...Vzpomínám na tu dobu, kdy jsme pro inspiraci pro výrobu různých věcí prohlíželi Rakouské časopisy o bydlení, ženy pak kopírovaly střihy z Rakouských časopisů Burda.. tedy pokud se je podařilo sehnat..Tehdy to zkrátka bylo tak: Co Rus nedovolil, to v obchodě nebylo. . Tohle psaní není jen o mě - takových domácích "kutilů" bylo v téhle zemi statisíce. Dneštní generace ale už tenhle fortel nemá. V tomhle směru český národ "zlenivěl"... na tohle žádná mobilní "aplikace" neexistuje - tím vším musel člověk projít. No a tam taky někde asi vznikl ten výraz "ZLATÉ ČESKÉ RUČIČKY" ... 😀

Tak pozor. Pojem zlaté české ručičky se špatně chápe i mezi Čechy. Buď je České kutilství, nebo zlaté ručičky. Příklad z Vašeho auta je typické kutilství. Servis nějakou dobu trvá a Vám stačí nějaká oprava. Tak to přilepíte, ualá a servis není potřeba. Zlaté české ručičky by se daly použít, kdyby jste o to zrcátko přišli a muselo by se nahradit něčím, co nefunguje stejně, ale je v autě a jde to donutit dělat to co je potřeba. A oprava by musela proběhnout třeba ve škarpě někde na poli. Jen s tím co mám v kapse, nebo kabelce. Příkladem naši dědečci a tatínci. Se škodou 100, když praskl klíňák, tak se nahradil tím co bylo v autě. Někdo měl provázek, jindy žena přišla o silonky, občas děti přišly o tkaničky. Ale auto se opravilo z toho co bylo zrovna po ruce a dalo se to upravit tak, aby to dělalo přesně to, k čemu to nikdy nebylo vytvořeno. To je přesně ten správný příklad. Potřebuju věc A, mám věc Z, dokážu donutit Z dělat A?

I'm glad you enjoyed it! I love the idea of Fushka. I sadly abandoned my metalsmithing tools and supplies when I moved to Prague because I knew it was too dangerous for a city flat. But I would love a workshop where I can go on the weekends and relax.

"Zlatý český ručičky" seems like a great idea how to boost national self-confidence in times of need (and lack of everything), but I always seen it more like a complete degradation of professional work.
"Why we should pay for a professional who is doing this kind of job every day for several years when I twice did a part of it on the father's house ten years ago?" While I can understand why people started with this mentality and kept it before 1990 when there was nothing easily accessible, I really don't like how it stayed in our culture till now when situation is completely different. The number of people complaining about high salaries of professionals, the number of buildings that look terrible and are often dangerous to their inhabitants and their neighbours… I still remember how people around me were angry when it was decided you have to hire a professional electrician to make your electric wiring if you want your building to be approved. "Everyone can do that! What so difficult about wiring?!" said every owner of burned house before the law.

Those overalls suit you, Jen, you should not wear anything else :). As far as "golden hands", it is definitely a myth, I have encountered more than my fair share of sloppy/shoddy work in Czechia. Houses, cars, clothes, bicycles, etc. People buy German and Japanese products for a reason. Beware of a "clever" repairman who uses improvised incorrect tools and is done very quickly. On the positive side Skoda makes solid cars, and Czechs at least appreciate skilled manual labor. Unlike for example Indians, they all just want to push papers, they view manual labor with contempt.
Thanks for your insight, Radim. I will say I have experienced the "improvised" solutions that usually fall apart within the week. I guess it depends on the workman. :)
I američania sú šikovní skôr tí, čo žijú na stredozápade na rančoch a "dedinách". V mestách je to horšie ale to je všade na svete. Aj tam je dosť kutilov na autá, motorky.
