It was September 10, 1965, I know I was there also got a baby sister that night named Betsy! I was also there for Camille Frederick Katrina and all the others if you live in south Mississippi, you don’t forget !!! they had to open the back very bridge. The old one to let my mother through to go to Biloxi regional where Betsy was born. We sheltered at D’Iberville. Elementary seems so long ago.
I was 6 and remembered we lost our porch roof - my father was up all night making sure we was safe - his brothers home got damaged in Bourg - they came to stay with us - lots of ppl sleeping at my house
I went through Hurricane Betsy in a boat. I was a teen aged crew member on an 82 foot Coast Guard Cutter stationed in Morgan City Louisana. We went out to a lighthouse to pick up two people, two boxer dogs and 2 cases of beer. From there we went back into the bayous to ride out the storm. In the middle of it, another crew member and I went over to the lock master's bunker from the boat. We had an anemometer to measure wind speed. It probably wasn't all that accurate but it said 160mph!!! I could lean into the wind, with my hands out the side and stay there with my head about a foot off the ground.
I watched from the front window in my parents house in Metairie LA which is outside of NOLA! I remember my parents staying calm and my older sisters freaking out! Trees falling everywhere trash cans flying BBQ pits flying around! Cars crushed by trees and debris!
I was 4. My mother put us to bed in case it flooded. She thought she could float us out on the mattress. We didn’t flood but the Mississippi River got to within a foot of the levee at the end of our street. The winds moved the poles on the porch and there were loads of tadpoles in the puddle at the end of our driveway. I remember hearing rain blowing against the house and windows. We were fine afterwards. I wouldn’t want to be in another one again. Since I’m in Kentucky now it’s doubtful I will. God bless those that live near the gulf.
Lived in Gretna, right outside on NewOrleans....I was 7 and remember it well.....we moved back up north to NJ after...it was awful....what the news doesn't show are all the gators and snakes that are all over the place....

I was in Gretna too and 5 years old. That wind blew and the house was shaking. We lost one big tree. Garage doors were like breathing in and out and can still hear my dad yelling at me to get out of that garage lol. Street flooding came right up to house but not in. We had only been in our brand new house 2 months and mom was crying but we had no damage. The next day we saw that the screen for the Gretna Drive In was twisted and demolished. The site of the drive in is now the Garden Lane Apartments. Been through all the hurricanes around here since but this was the loudest and strongest winds I remember. The eye of storm looked like came right up Barataria Bay and went over the west bank. Betsy was stronger than Katrina as far as winds were concerned no doubt but going west of the city was better for city as far as storm surge. It was a hell of a night.
The music and narration makes me feel like I’m watching the twilight zone. I was born in 64, but I lived in Southern California. All we thought about were earthquakes, never even heard of a hurricane till I moved to Georgia. I can’t imagine how frightening it must be knowing something like that is headed your way. Maybe one day, they will be able to predict earthquakes as well.
The core of Cat=3 Hurricane Betsy slammed into Key Largo on September the 8th 1965. Sections of greater Miami and Miami Beach had 2 to 3 feet of storm surge and wind gusts over 90-MPH........
Hurricane Camille took a lot of attention off this hurricane but it sounds pretty damn bad... I live in midwest but have a place in Tampa I go to Florida a lot luckily Tampa never gets hit but gets scared for sure ... Man these hurricanes are crazy

Camille is the most intense hurricane to ever hit the United States bar none they all try to clean the title but she was a killer
