Just to add on some things!
Gaster’s name, if W. D. does in fact mean Wing Dings, & Gaster is a portmanteau of G & Aster, means his name has two fonts.
Papyrus & Sans are two fonts as well.
Their traits are also complimentary opposites.
Papyrus is outgoing, extroverted, energetic, professional, & ambitious.
Sans is unbothered, introverted, lazy, casual, & unambitious.
While Papyrus is looking for glory, Sans doesn’t care. Opposite traits.
Papyrus is also tall & skinny, Sans is short & chubby. Papyrus wears more professional clothing, whereas Sans sports a hoodie, very casual wear.
Gaster seems to possess combinations of these traits. If Mystery Man is him, then that explains a lot.
Gaster is tall like Papyrus, but not skinny, he’s inbetween that of the two. Gaster influences the world around him, but indirectly, things extroverts do, influence, but with introverted methods, indirectly.
He’s clearly traumatized, at least physically, similar to Sans (mentally speaking), yet he was an ambitious scientist, ambitious like Papyrus.
Even their fonts line up.
Papyrus & Aster are used mostly for professional settings, Papyrus was the font used to write Roman law, extremely professional.
Comic Sans & Wing Dings on the other hand, are more silly, used more often for jokes, comics, & humour. All casual settings.
And their outfits, again, professional & casual.
Gaster (if Mystery Man), has what looks to be a comfy lab coat. Comfy? Sounds almost casual, just like a hoodie. Lab coat? A professional outfit used by scientists, professional just like Papyrus’ battle armour.

From my experience, just like Scott, Toby doesn’t just *add* stuff. Especially with the other half of lab notes being written in lower case and sans being said to only write in lower case. Like wow.
Why no one talks about that "conveniently shaped lamp" placed there that perfectly fits your character like if sans prepared for all this and knew it even before you came to the ruins...
Maybe even your REAL first run isnt the first run.
Maybe you already had timelines befor that.

DEUS VULT, It's more like Sans is an alternative version of Ness one that followed a different chain of events, but in his (Sans) own lore and history he is a shattered half of gaster. The idea of Sans existing comes from a Ness ROM hack, but in undertale Sans the character Ness is based off of is partly gaster.

Evidence to support your claim that sans has written some of the lab entries is that if you call papyrus outside the lab, he will be confused, sans will say 'that's a lab. Short for Laboratory'. Papyrus will respond with 'Lab. Labrador...y. So there are dogs in there?' Then with a winking face sans will reply 'I wouldn't rule it out' this alludes to the fact that sans has knowledge of the amalgamates.

To be honest, the determination extractor reminded me more of Omega Flowey than anything else.
We don’t actually KNOW that gaster is in fact a skeleton. He could just have white skin and black eyes, or maybe his colours faded after his experiment
It’s because he speaks in a unique MS Font, which is something the skeletons exclusively do.
also i believe sans and papyrus have gaster's DNA and also gaster's hands are segmented. he has lines seperating his fingers from his hands, also his gaster blasters are in the shape of a skull ;-;

The Goner monster kid says it's not raining because if you talk to him first he says that he's afraid of a world where it's as if he never existed, that everything is normal without him, that he is useless. He finds the umbrella funny because the umbrella is useless too, it's not raining, so if the umbrella didn't exist it would make no difference, but he is happy that it does exist, by showing him the umbrella you show him that even if an object/person has no place somewhere, they can still be there.

That wouldn't explain why Alphys would suddenly write half of those entries in lowercase when she writes them in perfect grammar and stuff, Nabstablook would be more of a DJ/Musician than a scientist, I think Sans would be the most suspicious one to have wrote those entries in lowercase.

No, he said Gaster IS Sans, and Papyrus. They are two halves of him. Which is a hole in his theory- like Ad S pointed out, how can Gaster talk to Sans and Alphys if Sans is a part of him that existed after Gaster died?
Alternate Timelines... Being shattered across a bunch of them... Only having a piece of you missing like the horcruxes in Harry Potter... A lot of reasons Sans could still be him and listening. Nothing conclusive though.

if you think about it Gaster yes is kind of a part of sans and papyrus because if you look at his hands there are two holes and two brothers so his hands could have those holes to make them idk that's just what i think
(G)aster may also be a reference to the flower family "Asteraceae". this family contains lowlying, herbaceous and often golden flowers. All the most famous garden flowers like buttercups and daisys belong to this group.
Could be, and that IS interesting to note because of Flowey. but it seems more likely it's just a font reference. Since we KNOW Toby does those.

I’m re-watching this episode over five years after this video has been released, and remember this video coming out and thinking how awesome of a person MatPat is and even now in the start of 2023 I am still thinking that! With Entry Number 9 it says:
“things aren’t going well. none of the bodies have turned into dust, so i can’t get the SOULs. i told the families that i would give them the dust back for the funerals. people are starting to ask me what’s happening. what do I do?”
Assuming this IS Sans talking and not Alphys, it would explain why Sans’ mailbox is filled with so much mail, and maybe even the crumpled paper and/or LETTERS in his room. Those letters are reminders of the part he played in the DT experiments with Alphys.
Only major thing that doesn’t make sense with this, is entry 11 would have Sans saying he gets sweaty when working on finishing Mettaton’s body. It might be safer to say, the non capitalized ones are when Alphys was super flustered and anxious at certain points during the experiments.

I do think Sans helped Gaster, and possibly Alphys, but I don't think he wrote any of the logs.
If sans was receiving letters from families, assuming he just left them in the mailbox, why is it when you click on the mailbox it just calls it junk mail. If sans just took the families' letters to his room and click on them, it doesnt say what they are about. (I might be wrong about that I dont remember) Might just be hiding something from us or this could all be unrelated entirely

I was thinking the same thing when I watched. If Sans is half of Gaster, then how did he exist before Gaster shattered by working with Alphys and Gaster in the true lab?
I think is that sans already existed before papyrus, thats why sans is papyrus’ older brother maybe sans was created before papyrus and helped gaster with alphys and when gaster split half of his smart brain went to sans and half went to papyrus or something
It’s possible that sans and papyrus already existed, but gaster’s mind got somewhat lodged into the skelebros’ mind

I really doubted big G could be sans and paps, but I do like the Handplates theory, where he had to cut out a part of him to make his sons, because…like…how else can skeletons reproduce without a type of cloning? Also, he took the matter from his hands because of the whole “speaking in hands” things of WINGDINGS, plus there are two hands as well as two sons, that’s why there are holes in his hands.
(Also for everyone to thinks he can summon hands as tools/weapons, the holes make them more aerodynamic)
13:36 if W.D. Gaster is saying "What do you two think?" To Sans and Alphys how is W.D. Gaster, Sans? Unless your getting to the point that because he's from a different timeline he got involved in the science and saw what happened, knowing it would because he is the future of what would happen.

Well, Sans is likely created from Gaster. When he was scattered through time and space, some of himself was probably absorbed into Sans. Papyrus, his other creation, absorbed parts of Gaster as well.
Ok yes I realise this comment is five months old but I still found it interesting, you make a good point!
I think it's less that Sans was *created* by Gaster and more that him splitting apart is what made the Sans we know. Like, the timeline where Gaster died is the one Sans wants to return to, because in absorbing half of him, he got pushed into a different one, or at least something changed? That would be a cool way it could work :)

I don’t think when Gaster addresses the two, he addresses Sans and Alphys. I think it’s Asgore and Alphys. Since Gaster hadn’t fully split at that point in time, how could he address a person, who is made up of himself. Otheewise a solid argument.

In the game, when they are at the surface, Papyrus asks what the glowing ball is, and Sans replies the sun. You touched on this on your previous theory. I fully agree with your theory, but adding on the idea that Sans and Papyrus where two separate entities in the beginning with Gaster's soul breaking apart and entering them later.
Here's something mind-shattering as well, Alphys knows about the timelines, too. In Mettaton's quiz show, the last question asks, "Who does Alphys have a crush on?". If you selected "No one," Alphys' dialogue after becomes a bit suspicious. Alphys states, and I quote, "H-hey, I're done *research* about this. There are *Alternate Universes* out there! S-someday, maybe, I could meet them...".

At 14:59, if you look at the darker half of mystery man’s sprite, its shape looks similar to papyrus’ head. While it’s not as obvious, the white half very slightly resembles sans’ head. Coincidence? Maybe.
