    i think the dark arts have been referred to as seductive, indicating that they seem like the answer until unintended consequences for yourself or others show up that you haven't accounted for. i hope the "morality" system is more like dishonored's chaos system- i don't think i could hack it if i was going about avada kedavra-ing people, then everyone thought it was fine because i said nice things in cutscenes. the dissonance would be too much.

      I agree with that. I think that Avalanche is using this dark magic quest line as a way to present the opportunity for players without it being game breaking. Experience it if you want to and have fun, but if not then that's cool too. It least that's what it seems.

      It'd be awesome if after completing (or at least being in the middle of) this questline you're able to use the dark arts during other encounters in the game where you wouldn't see them if you hadn't learned them beforehand. It'd impact your reputation/honor of course, but I think that'd be a pretty cool.

    More than being evil, I think the "dark path" quest line will unlock other options for you to choose further in the story.
    For example: If you don't follow the dark path, then find yourself about to beat an important boss from the rebellion, it leads you automatically to simply knocking the boss down. But if you followed the dark path, once you reach that same point, now the game takes a pause to give you the choice if to knock down or kill the boss.
    So you still continue the main story events, but with a more ruthless endeavor.

      That's what I am hoping, that we'll get to see that Dark Magic be used again outside of that quest line. I think the option or choice of how to deal with the final boss could make it really interesting.

      Personally I wouldn't mind Avada just being a "win button" Dark Arts are supposed to be seductive. Why not make the Dark Arts the most broken OP spells in game, with the obvious trade off that using them makes you go down the path to true evil.
      Make Impero, a 100% pass on any speech check if they're in the game, or a "until killed" helper
      Make Crucio a permanent CC
      and make Avada a insta kill
      BUT every time you use one an invisible gage fills that sets you on the evil path, from which you can't return. You'll still get dialog options but your options will all be evil choices. Make the spells seductive by making them objectively, game breakingly, powerful but you're going to end up playing as the villian if you use them too much. Then your actions have consequences, through your gameplay choices, which to me, is much better than "I pick the big meanie bad guy choice" no, you CHOSE to use the unforgivable curses without a second thought, you're a monster and you chose to do it because it was easy.

  • @Reapr_Jay
    @Reapr_Jay Před rokem +32

    I see this being like Mass Effect with the paragon/renegade system. Paragon is basically the morally correct side of the coin, where you’re honorable and morally correct(most of the time). Renegade however is basically you being a hard ass, jerk off that usually choose the more selfish or morally wrong choices, but still fight for the greater good. I think this system could fit perfect in HL.

    • @TheBeastCH
      @TheBeastCH Před rokem +9

      That's a morality system that hard tracks your choices. Chandler said that won't be in the game. You can make those decisions, but there won't be a good - evil, or Paragon - Renegade (which is essentially just the same thing but renamed, if I understood this correctly), bar that locks you out of certain choices or abilities if you go too far to one or the other end of the spectrum.

    • @JoshLevelsUp
      @JoshLevelsUp  Před rokem +3

      I think it could be a really great fit as well, but I don't think that the game will be include a system that in-depth, unfortunately. • @JoshLevelsUp
      @JoshLevelsUp  Před rokem +1

      Good explanation. It will be a lot more of a simplified system focused on dialogue options it would seem.

    • @AsaelTheBeast
      @AsaelTheBeast Před rokem +6

      I sure and the fuck hope not. ME's morality system was the worst of all morality systems.
      it devolves all situations into a binary of being the paragon of good or a mad baby strangling maniac. It takes the roleplay out of the roleplaying game when you just mindlessly pick the blue or red option regardless of any other considerations.
      I'd rather they not bother with morality at all if it allows us to have some fucking nuance in our choices and actions. Morality point systems are the worst thing to happen to RPG gaming- game-ifying things you should actually have to think about, given meaning by the narrative and your feeling on it, and not just some point rewards because of some devs arbitrary judgement call.

    • @darthralin
      @darthralin Před rokem +1

      @@TheBeastCH Kind of. Both extremes in the first two ME games unlocked different conversation options in the hardest speech-checks in the game (you could talk down second-to-last boss in the first game, for example), but I recall that the system was softened a bit in the third game, where only the total of Renegade/Paragon points mattered for unlocking the speech checks, while the content of your options depended on which one you had more of (with enough total points you could broker peace between two species engaged in a war of mutual extermination, but a Paragon would do this with a passionate speech appealing to their inner goodness, while a Renegade would do so by browbeating both sides until they agreed to play ball.)
      But yeah, even with that, it's a pretty clear case of hard-tracking they explicitly said wasn't going on as a morality system. Something else that could be going on, however, would be a reputation system. Dragon Age, another Bioware series, has an approval system where companions approve or disapprove of actions they witness and this is tracked to determine how much they like you. This kind of system could work with some sort of reputation system applied to non-companion characters.

Any game whose story's basic premise is that there's a conflict between two sides means that the interesting writing bits are in those two sides and both their flaws, stories and qualities. If you create an option C, then those two main sides are dumb and the plot of the game no longer matters to your character.
      There's this weird power fantasy thing a lot of people have where they can't accept that choices have to be made, and like, alright, power fantasies are not necessarily bad- True endings feel rewarding and being able to make everyone happy by putting in the work is good. But what kind of person hears "dark magic" and goes "Yep, I can control it and be strong, so grey wizard"? Especially when that's the kind of mentality that creates dark mages in first place in universe, it's like, the whole point of dark powers being "seductive", that's literally how people fall to those dark sides.
      There's some genuine discussion to be had on this topic- Like the guy who brought up that dark magic should work as Dishonored chaos, or that you should play in the good guy sides but more ruthless and cruel, or how dialogue options should work...But going with this is just a desire to be strong that takes away from the game and I genuinely hope they don't create a "good guy dark mage" path.

    I think I already said this, but the morality system and ability to choose whether or not we are good or bad will make future dlc's so much more interesting

  • @N30WULF
    @N30WULF Před rokem +1

    The devs have simultaneously made it known that there will not only be no “morality” system, but also that your “choices” will define what happens. So what does that mean?
    Morality by definition is the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad behavior. In one of the game trailers you hear the wizard state “how can a curse be forbidden if it can be used to save a life?”
    We also know that there is a huge push by the devs for players to be able to explore the “dark arts” path. Heck, there’s a dark arts pre-order bundle included. So what is being stated by “no morality system” is that common concepts of what is good and what is bad will not be in this game, or at the least those concepts will be challenged. For example, what is chaos for the fly is perfectly normal for the spider!
    Also, magic itself is usually not considered good or evil, it’s neutral, but the intent of the user makes it good or evil. Think of it this way, a gun is not a good or evil weapon, although it can be used for both purposes. What one person may define as “murder” could easily be defined as “justifiable homicide” by someone else. There’s a lot of circumstantial evidence that must be considered before it is clearly defined.
    So this game will have a choice system that allows players to explore various forms of magic without putting a good or evil outcome on it. Yet your choices will also make you either a dark, light, or possibly even gray wizard.

    I hope the morality system is something passive. Like if you've done a lot of bad things, some magical creatures can sense that and wont help you. Some parts of the story which wouldve been easier had you not chosen the ''easy choice'' of turning to the dark arts would become harder instead. The opposite will then also happen where if you choose to reject the dark arts, certain sections of the story will be harder, but others will be easier with the help of other beings that sense the good in you. There also might be a middle ground where you're not entirely good, but not entirely bad either.

    The difference between the light and dark arts is the intention.
    If the intention is neutral, they get classified as grey.
    Example of grey magic will be stupefy, petrificus totalus, oculus reparo, reparo etc
    Light magic can include healing arts, as their intention is to help people.
    Dark arts however include spells which cause a "negative" effect.
    Curses, hexes etc fall into this.
    Even light arts can be twisted, and dark arts can be used for good.
    Soooo there's that.

  • @AjuntaPall316

    They aren't going to be something you can use whenever you wish, or they would break the game. But hopefully they will be options that you can use at certain points in time throughout major events of the story. For instance, many games have certain choice mechanics in regards to choices where you save or kill an individual. Or when they are forced to choose sides. So I think it'll be more of a story element rather than a gameplay one. But, you'll have to have chosen to learn them before you're allowed to use them. But I agree, I will be extremely pissed off if they are only included in one optional questline, rather than included into major events of the story.

    Having a choice to go the Dark Arts path, implies that the 3 forbidden curses aren't necessary to beat the game. Also, because there's a trophy for reaching a 100 hits combo & a build-up curse bar (in blue on the right when in combat), I think that Avada Kadavra will be an ''evil'' combat finisher versus a ''good'' combat finisher will be that Tempest curse we've seen. Both curses obliterate/1-shot an enemy from the footage we've seen, thus they are equally powerful, but different events & endings might result from using one over the other. Either way, I did the test on the Potter fan website and I'll start as a Slytherin...You know where my 1st play-through is going. Muahahaha!

Cyberpunk did well there. will play the game first round as I would irl lol shall see what happens. Dark arts are more shady arts depending on how you use Them in Harry Potter. plus it’s a teen rating so can’t see it being that dark. I hope the rating didn’t hold them back in the game and it was based on technicalities. I’ll definitely be the ‘good guy’ but, gotta play to see how that looks in the game. Glad they’ll let us have character creation... playing a girl (like I am), is fun first go when trying to play as if it’s rl. Again, just that rating ...
