    My boyfriend took my hand the other day and said “Never stop running, it does so much good for you” - my well-being and ability to just do life significantly improves when I’m regularly training. It’s like my body was made to do it so my brain can get on with everything else!

    I was a heroin addict in 2020, overdosed and whilst on methadone got into running to lose the weight from the meds. Now i run for one of the most famous running clubs in the county and I'm running parkrun in sub 20 minutes! Made a great circle of friends too who are nice people, as opposed to drug users / dealers.

    Philly, thanks for this video and all your other content. At the start of 2020, I was 55, 260 lbs and in a dead end job, in a dead end marriage and had lost all my confidence at life. I had only 2 things to look forward to retirement and death. I felt I had lost control of my life and my health was deteriorating fast. I had several co-morbidities factors that would affect Covid and I lived in fear of catching it and dying alone hooked up to a respirator. Things were so bad that I figured if I was going to die anyway, I should go out on my own terms. This thought was completely rational to me. I failed and wound up getting the counseling I needed. I didn’t realize how depressed I had been for so long. I struggled to take control of my life but started exercising, running (slowly) and biking. Exercise became the zen moment in my life and no matter how chaotic things got, I would always feel better after exercising and it built up the confidence I had in myself once more. Today, I’ve lost 90 lbs, almost all my health issues have subsided, I have more energy and focus during the day, I took a promotion, moved, separated and I’m now the happiest I’ve been ever in my life. I feel comfortable in my skin for the first time in my life. I’ve also completed a marathon and a half Ironman. I’ve also had plenty of setbacks but have been able to keep a positive attitude and not spiraled down into the depths of depression again because of my new routine. I now think the best years are still ahead of me. My only negative thought is too many races and not enough time!
    Love the channel and I like how you tell all aspects and don’t hold anything back. It’s important for people to know there is always hope and ways to make a change. It might not be running for everyone, but they need to find what works for them and keep moving forward. Love the grind!

    Awesome to hear what running has done for you. It's such a different story for everyone, and i am very happy it has taken you to good places. Role model qualities you're displaying here.
    For me, it's been a massive confidence builder, a mental health counterbalance and ultimately part of why i feel like a happy and based person right now.
    If this video just gets your message to sink in with one young person, your whole youtube efforts are alread worth it, in my view!
    Edit: to clarify, the sum total of what it did, not the bad things along the journey, obviously.

    Phily you're literally describing my life. Some young brains deal with hormonal development better than others. Mine and sounds like yours too didn't deal with it well and we needed to expend energy to balance our mental health.
    I think this is often the case with many young people and especially young men. Running/sport should be a mandatory class throughout school.

    Thanks for this Phily especially coming from you who is an inspiration to lots of us watching is a reminder of why to continue. I also have a very troubled past and exercise generally and now running has kept me from continuing down the path I was on which very nearly killed me a few times.     Thank you for sharing your story, even though some things may be uncomfortable to talk about, even if you've changed now. Sports is great for changing someone's life. I've been through some really toxic times in a relationship, eventually broke up, had a baaad crush on someone only to find out she already had someone. I was incredibly depressed, but during that whole ordeal I got into triathlon. I can't say that I'm completely fine, but I reckon I'd be in a much worse place mentally (and physically haha) if I didn't do all of that running, cycling, swimming and gymwork I'm doing right now
    Also your videos have been a huge inspiration and I really like the way you bring your knowledge and thoughts across! And the editing is always on point :)

    What a powerful video Phily. Yes, running can certainly help and make a positive influence on one's life. I think about how many places running has taken me in terms of seeing the world and experiencing different places that I wouldn't have ventured out to see. Also, the sheer amount of personal connections I've made over the years via running are just uncountable. Your story is very compelling and I love how you told it. My only regret about running is I wish I had started it sooner. I didn't really get into it until I was 27. I wonder what level of talent I could've gotten to if I had had a coach in high school to tutor me along the way. I enjoy your work and dedication to the sport!

    Running deffo developed me into a much more rounded person. I made a lot of poor choices earlier in life but running helped me.
    It’s taught me a lot about the importance of discipline, hard work, eating right, sleeping right and even the people who I’m spending my time with.

    Thank you so much for being so open in your videos! I am a distinctly average runner but can still draw many parallels to my own life.
    I have ADHD and whilst my school life wasn’t quite as chaotic as yours there are so many things about this story and your general demeanour which are familiar. Not that it matters as you’re clearly thriving but I wonder if this may explain some of the story a little.

      Thank you for this! I’ve suspected I may have ADHD for a long while, but in an expensive minefield of finding out, I’m not sure whether I should or if it will even help? It’s a part of me if I do have it, maybe one day I might like to learn how to train it a bit better… so I can get things done how I think “normal” people do 😂

      @@PhilyBowden Being normal is so overrated! ADHD can be a bit of a superpower for really “hyper focusing” on things you love and excelling at them. Even if it can make even starting other tasks near impossible some days.
      As far as whether diagnosis is worth the aggro, that’s super personal but the main reasons are probably medication and knowing for sure what’s going on for self esteem reasons. Otherwise there’s nothing stopping you from going and reading up on it and learning coping techniques and things with or without a diagnosis. 🤷
      I was personally diagnosed as a child and it helped to know it was there but I never did the whole mediciation thing and I reckon that was the right call for me.

    Oh Phily, so good. Loved hearing about how you grew and developed into who you are today, warts and all (though it can't be said any of it was "bad", difficult maybe, but "bad" stuff leads to the good stuff. All part of your story which you are still writing. I recently got derailed from my plan to run the Philadelphia Marathon in November due to a slow healing tendon injury. I decided though to run a spring marathon and hopefully be ready and healthy for that...in Copenhagen!!! Now, where did I get that idea?

    If you want to dry your shoes, turn them upside down and place them onto of your fridge towards the back so the natural heat from the radiator dries them.

    Running in the past couple months has changed my life, mainly because i have a lot of time on my hands and it's the only thing i can afford to do really, as running is free and post education is not. 9 months alcohol free now and running 4-5 days a week, i wouldve laughed at the concept a year ago. The discipline from running has helped massively in all aspects of life now

    I have a similar story: I was raised in south africa, naughty too, moved to "jordan" middle east next to saudi and egypt which is next to africa or ethopia, And it was rough, I didnt go well with kids, I caused trouble, I didnt learn a lot of arabic, but now I moved to thailand a started running. now I am a 18:41 5k runner, 38:40 10k runner, and a 1:28:00 half marathon runner. (I have a youtube channel about my race) Im glad to see that we have simuilar backrounds!

    Thank you so much for sharing, this was a such an interesting video and can’t have been easy to make.
    My journey couldn’t have been more different. Too scared at school to be naughty! And didn’t discover running until my early thirties. I would love to have been my ‘running self’ during school / college / uni as I think it would have transformed my experiences. But I am so glad I eventually found it when I did, and can enjoy it for many years to come.
    I watch @thismessyhappy and wish I’d had a PE teacher like Ben who might’ve inspired me from a younger age!

    I have that ADHD thing as well. I can't do to many things well so I almost failed school but I can do some things quite well when I'm interested in them. I can get focused (almost to obsession) on just a very few things at a time and now that just happens to be trail running. I'm not a pro but I'm better than everyone but a few for my age at the trails I use at 68 years old. And I do think of you at time when training . . . when I see a girl that looks like you zip past me LOL :o)
    Sometimes we suck at school because we do not get inspiring teachers/mentors. We need inspiration to stir up our interest. I feel as though I could have done well at ANYTHING if I was inspired to go in some other direction.

    Can you make a video about your injuries and what you did for each injury to recover? Idk what to do for shin splints and arthritis in a toe. (Both injuries I'm trying to deal with at the moment).

    I was the absolute WORST to my French teacher and a real tear away in school. I don’t think I went to a single PE lesson- I wouldn’t have ever imagined myself moving into competitive weightlifting and now running for fun 😅

    The concept that a negative expirence will push you in a direction for better or worse, how you react to the expirence is how you influence the results. But Yes, everything happens for a reason because without those situations you wouldnt know how to improve yourself.

    I love the honesty and openness in the video. There’s a line in a song by rise against, that talks about life being tough for everyone, but that “how we survive, is what makes us who we are”. Your bouncebackability from the lows, through running, helps you get to the highs, and should serve as a great inspiration for so many.

    I feel like we all have to be a little shit when we're growing up. In my experience, people who were wild, chill out a lot and find direction and do well with it. Usually we act out cause we're bored and can't find meaning or a passion for something, but when we do, we put all that energy into that. The people that never act up, they never get watched, they don't know how to control themselves because they never had to, and eventually they go off the deep end. They start doing hard 'substances' because they feel like they missed out when they were younger. The problem is, if you mess up when you're younger, you have to talk to your parents or a principal. If you mess up as an adult, you talk to a judge.

    Did you also find a role model - someone you wanted to be like? Did you find someone who made you feel special? These are two factors researchers have identified that contribute to resiliency - bouncing back from being at risk to being successful.

    Hey, I have a question:
    In november, I started your 5k training plan. That was absolutely fantastic and improved my time by ~2 minutes in 2 months (from 28:36 to 26:32).
    I now started the beginners 10k plan, with a goal pace of 5:30. However, the interval and tempo runs feel much too easy. I probably would be able to do them again. This is probably not how it is meant to be. What would be the better solution: Extending the length of the intervals, by a few meters/minutes, so I am more exhausted in the and? Or stick with the lengths and set my goal pace down to 5:15 or so?

    Great video as always. I wish more people felt remorse for teachers they ruined their early careers. I know so many early teachers who have left because of behaviour of pupils.

    I can't say I was ever as badly behaved as you say you were but I would not have been anywhere near as successful academically if it hadn't been for running. In Year 9 I became obsessed with running, totally obsessed with winning an English School's title (blowing my own trumpet I managed to win two!) which prevented me from going down the same road as some of my best mates who started to do the usual things 15 and 16 year old lads start to dip into. Spent twenty four years happily teaching A Level history and classics - which would not have been possible without a good academic background which I may well not have gained if I hadn't been training 10-12 times a week from age 15.

    I agree with all the positive comments. Maybe there was a psychological link between your fear of prison and your choice to join the civil service. It's so great that you got out of it and followed your dream. Any idea what happened to the school friend who was expelled?

    Interesting to hear your history and the awareness of your behaviour… I wonder if the little shits at school ever look back and regret or feel ashamed of how they behaved. Im sure that you would find that your German teacher is actually exceptionally pleased for you in what you have achieved.

      I think I’ve always been pretty self aware/reflective, maybe back then I’d have buried my head and denied it, but I knew I was a little Sh*t! I hope so, I just want to say sorry for making her working life tough!

    Don't know if you remember any German you learned. "Ich bin froh, dass du die Kurve gekriegt hast !"
    I grew up in a community where the the cool kids were the ones who were really bad at school and you got mocked when you had good grades. To fit in a also became a bit of a naughty kid and made lots of stupid jokes about the teachers. And later I also drank too much alcohol.
    That only changed when I moved away and went to university - I remember being surprised when my new friends were genuinely happy for me for having a good grade at one of the exams.
    My psychologist told me once that she heard a similar story from other patients from a rural areas - it's quite common to hold back outliers that are better than average.
    I'm not a good runner (2h half marathon) but I enjoy it and it has a good effect on my mental health.

      I googled it 😉 thank you! And you’re not NOT a good runner, it depends how you define “good”. If it’s 1:59 half marathon or faster, then no you’re not good. But if it’s someone who dedicates themself, enjoys running, practises, has a healthy relationship with the sport, gains something from running - any of the above, then you are a good runner!
