Decades of amazing music, Zappa, Zeppelin, Floyd, Rush, Genesis, Yes, Tull, etc. live inside of Steven Wilson and he's on a mission to keep it alive.
Own up steve you munch shrooms, that wasTOTALLY Zappa/Vai style Sick
My favourite artist from the last 20 years. Not only his bands are full of virtuoso players but the level of composition is top notch.
I’ll keep beating this drum. After Rush, deep dive into Porcupine Tree 😁
Steven is absolutely brilliant and surrounds himself with equally brilliant musicians.
Everybody says "Hand. Cannot. Erase" is probably his masterpiece and who am I to argue, but for me "The Raven..." just hits all the right spots, every single time.
Steven Wilson is a GENIUS!!! Marco Minnemann!!! Lets GO!
You are entering a gigantic rabbit hole brother!!
The song "The Raven That Refused to Sing" is probably the most sadly beautiful song I've ever heard. But then you listen to Drive Home (and that solo!) and maybe those are the two most sadly beautiful songs?
Steven Wilson tends to make things sound good. His records are really well recorded and his re-masters sound great as well. This entire record is amazing. Hand. Cannot. Erase. is a great record as well.
Justin u should react to more Porcupine Tree and Steve Wilson. U won't be disappointed 😌
The whole album is stunning,I love porcupine tree but I prefer his solo stuff even more.
I remember when Nick Beggs first got talked about working with SW and everyone was like "You mean the guy from Kajagoogoo?" But all doubts were quickly dropped the minute you heard his playing (he was quite a sight on stage as well in his kilt!) SW had been building toward this kind of music on his earlier solo albums, but this album is his ultimate love letter to the early 70s hard core prog of King Crimson, where you have avant garde jazz sitting alongside heavy rock riffs. So it was a very conscious choice to bring on Theo Travis and Adam Holzman to balance out Beggs, Minneman and Govan (and himself.) Overall this is album is a masterpiece. I hope you eventually react to the rest of it.
I saw SW with Nick Beggs live. He is an absolutely underappreciated , diverse , and tasteful bassist. He really can play anything. Any style. And best of all? He knows his place in the music.
He'd only been playing challenging parts with Steve Hackett for about a decade at that point.
Btw: Jakko Jakczyk from KC backed Steven Wilsons vocals on this song.
This track is the wizardy of one of the greatest musical chefs alive today. There are times that I think Steven Wilson has a closet full of secret sauce and a recipe book that contains dishes made by all of the great bands that came before him. He opens the book, reads about half of the recipe, and then whips up a meal using his own ingredience. In this case, I think the page fell open to the ELP stew.
Guitar player is the legendary Guthrie Govan some of his solos on Wilsons albums are amazing
For my taste, the Drive Home solo is the best guitar solo of the 21st century. Tons of guys can shred, but nobody matches Guthrie when it comes to mixing those chops with very musical ideas.
Simply awesome .
Wilson is a musical genius.
You need to check out First Regret/Ten Years Older, Home Invasion/Regret #9, and Ancestral from the amazing “Hand. Cannot. Erase.” album. The entire album is phenomenal.
What a brilliant reaction Justin, probably the best I have seen, looks like you are heading down that rabbit hole 😁 Steven / PT have been my favourite artist since 2000, I have never looked back since, saw them and him live multiple times, he is simply a genius, the live version is just as epic, you actually see him conduct the band, perfectionist! There is So much great music to listen too, I look forward to more reactions from them, thanks.
Luminol - The song takes its inspiration from a busker, who, according to Wilson, is "there every single day. It doesn’t matter what the weather is like; he’s always there, playing his acoustic guitar and singing these songs. Snow, rain, gale force wind - nothing will stop him from being in his spot. ... He’s the kind of guy who is so set in his routine that even death wouldn’t stop him." Wilson considers the notion "that somebody could be a ghost in life, as well as a ghost in death, somebody who’s completely ignored even in their lifetime - it hardly makes a difference; and death doesn’t make a difference, either; it doesn’t break the routine."[
Clicked on this....I knew Justin would love it ha. Steven Wilson and his band member choices are bombadiggy. So happy I've been following this dude since the 90's. Long live prog.
That was great! While I have heard of Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson as a solo artist I had never heard any of their music until the piece you reacted to last week and this one. Both great. Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson are artists on my list that I want to explore some day. Im a fan of prog and so many people recommend them. There’s not just enough time to listen to it all. But I guess I should make the time to listen to Porcupine Tree and Steve’s solo music.
Same, same, and same lol Did I write this comment?!
Amazing body of work. STEVEN Wilson is a GENIUS!
What are you waiting for? Not enough time? Cut the crap and you'll have time to explore this goldmine.
@@tobyornot not sure what crap youre talking about but ok thanks
In Absentia is Porcupine Trees heaviest album in my opinion, but all of their albums are mind blowing. Today i was litening to Blackest eyes..brilliant!!
Like I told you in that last PT reaction. They have tons of music like this. Along with Steven's solo stuff
Never heard this before. This one’s a banger for sure.🔥
Recommending Pariah to listen and perhaps react to with your wife. Just simple love song duet with Ninet Tayeb but Steven Wilson knows how to craft a song for sure. This song was incredible and right up my alley and why I often listen to reaction channels. Good stuff!
To me, this particular track sounds like early 70's Yes. and I really like it. First time hearing Steven Wilson.
Amazing Justin. I was pretty sure you'd get into this one. The first time i heard it i couldn't believe what I'd heard. I'll send along more SW and PT and other adjacents, too. There's a lot. Thanks for a great review.
Ladies and gentlement it is a real máster pices
When you have time watch the live version live in Mexico. It adds so much!
Hard jazz progressive funk rock!!!
I’m just starting this rabbit hole. Been listening over last few months. Haven’t heard this one yet. Banger. Great. Loved it.
PROG ON!
Rick Beato just interviewed Steven Wilson. Very Cool. Kizmet! lol
Story. Saw SW on the Hand.Cannot.Erase after the show I went to the merch table there was Nick Beggs who sold me This album on vinyl. He opened it and signed it then handed it to Adam Holzman who signed it. I thanked Nick for his work on this song and he says it's a brilliant piece of music isn't it? What a great memory by two cool guys who were humble and nice.
At times loosely reminds me of Heart Of The Sunrise by Yes. Love it! Cheers!
Oh man this whole album is just incredible. A legit prog masterpiece. Some of the other songs are real tear jerkers too. They did some amazing animated videos for them. Definitely worth watching: Drive Home & The Raven That Refused to Sing.
This is the level
This was essentially a supergroup that recorded this album. I mean, Marco Minnemann was one of the finalists to replace Mike Portnoy in Dream Theater. And while you can't tell from this track, guitarist Guthrie Govan is in a league of his own. His solo in Drive Home is simply to die for. Cheers!
Wooooooooo!! Yeah!!!!!!!!! 🤣🥳
Drive Home, also on this album, is one of my all-time favorite tracks and has, possibly, the best guitar solo I've ever heard ( just saw on an interview with Steven Wilson that the guitarist broke a string at the beginning of the solo and just did it that way.... ).
Temazo
Marco Minnemann the drummer here is amazing..... but then the whole band is, having had Gavin Harrison too as the porcupine tree drummer Steve Wilson has had his pick of great drummers....also definitely worth mentioning the great Adam Holzman is on this album playing keyboards who has played with such jazz legends as Miles Davis & Marcus Miller.... as you noticed it shows in the playing! BTW I nearly forgot to mention the guitarist on this album too, Guthrie Govan who is a prodigy from the UK.... also Theo Travis appears here on flute, another world class musician and it was engineered by the legendary Alan Parsons (Pink Floyd) So it's like the "Elite" of talent all on one album. Great reaction Justin Thanks. (Apologies for the nonsense text in the original message)
Noice! I like TRTRTS, but it's a smidge to jazzy to be my favourite SW album. Give me Hand.Cannot.Erase. every day of the week. Glad to see Steven reactions. Looking forward to Home Invasion/Regret #9 or Refuge from To the Bone, another stellar album. 😜😜
Loved this reaction. KeepSW/PT coming.
That is Nick Beggs on bass awesome player (played for Kajagoogoo pop band before your time !)
Great song and for your own enjoyment go check out the live version on YT. Steven always surrounds himself with musicians and technicians who are capable of matching his own impeccable standards which means that whether it is studio or live it is always fire. The good news after one PT song and one SW solo song is that you still have the contents of 11 Porcupine Tree studio albums and 6 Steven Wilson solo albums to explore. Oh and then there are Stevens side projects, Blackfield, No-Man and Storm corrosion…….welcome to the Wilson universe.
You should react to the live version of this :) Steven Wilson always in his bare feet lol
Damn you, now I need to go buy this!! lol
THIS IS "Soft Machine" ,but more tripped out.Epic, and Surreal,on my Dope play list for 2023.Hippy Holidayz
So glad you liked it! Steven Wilson never ceases to amaze me!
You should try the live version of this from Get all you deserve DVD (live Mexico City) its even better still. Yes its a solo effort but still incredible. The live version includes Nick Beggs Marco Minnemann Theo Travis etc.. amazing band.
Definitely listen to "Drive Home" from the same album.
Great, but why not the live version? Even better!
I was asked for this version. I don't know any different so this is totally fine by me, I thought it was incredible.
@@JustinPanariello NOP. Here the love one: czcams.com/video/EM-5EBAJ7tA/video.html
This was a Prog-a-copia of music. It was awesome imo.
Time flies pt
If you like this check out the rest of the album and then go to the Hand Cannot Erase album. I suggest you listen to the song "Home Invasion / Regret #9" it will blow you away.
***CAUTION*** you may not recover. ;-)
Watchmaker and Holy Drinker off this same album are equally as great.
And check out hate song live by porcupine tree.
Home Invasion/Regret #9 must be next on your list for SW
I don't know if anybody told you to watch it live, if not, I will tell you to see it live......it's another dimention.
This was done live in Mexico city
It was called
"GET ALL YOU DESERVE "
I saw it and it was the most incredible experience I've have ever had. I've seen quite a bit of good musicians Tull,Moorhead, Rush 9 times Kansas, King Crimson, in the early 70tys
I could go on!
But the one that sticks out on me and still does to this day is Themat Concert in Mexico City
Get it its on DVD
" steve Wilson's "
"Get all you deserve "
Buddy you will never be the same!
I even have seen Classical Theatrical Depeche Mode
Tool Dream Theater THE CURE ... the Group and all of Steve Wilson Pics of Musicians are the utmost talented artists i have ever ever seen! There are other good to Great ones but this 💩👀🍻is off the HOOK!!!
👍🤘
Love Steve Wilson and PT material. Saw Steve in Dallas a few years ago and it was amazing. This tune has a definitive, older King Crimson vibe throughout!
Also check Home Invasion / Regret #9 from his 2015 Hand Cannot Erase album
I've always seen this song as a symphony in three very distinct parts. Probably my favorite from SW, although I love them all.
I really appreciate Steven Wilson and all the collaborations he’s done with some amazing artists. The talent is undeniable yet it doesn’t grab me. Too avant-garde perhaps. That’s why I never could really gravitate towards Yes though I do like 90125
Reminds me of early king Crimson 😎
Luminal Live from Mexico City video is 10X better than the recorded track.
"Grace Before Drowning" is SWs " jazz " album. "Insurgentes" is ambient, shoegaze ,and soundtracky...."The Raven That Refused To Sing" and" Hand. Cannot. Erase." are his "prog concept" albums. His last two albums explore more modern and pop sensibilities. He , like Bowie( I'm not saying their equals) refuses to be boxed in, or beholden to genre. As an SW fan , you have to know that going in....
Great reaction - I only heard the live version until now and this was slightly different - I think Adam Holtzmans solos are better in the live version but both are great and definitely worth a listen
Hi Justin - so great to see someone discovering the genius of Steven Wilson all over again. Both with Porcupine Tree and as a solo artist.
If you looking for the next track to react to with Steve in his band Porcupine Tree - try this one
czcams.com/video/W3lsqUqGTzM/video.html
This is Arriving Somewhere but Not Here - a live recording.
Gobsmacking.....
And if liked Luminol with Steve and his solo musicians - you aint heard nothing yet. Try this one
czcams.com/video/qFwcahcDzP4/video.html
This is Ancestral LIve at the Albert Hall
You will never view musicianship the same again.
So, we’re going down the pt/Wilson hole? Wonder how far in the future we will get a voyage 34 reaction
Steven Wilson, don't hate me, Rotterdam, North Sea jazz festival.
I like these solo records a bit better than Porcupine Tree. The Tree still good though.
Welcome to the wonderful world of Steven Wilson/Porcupine Tree appreciation. You will never be the same again! Keep listening, check out the earlier PT albums, the Opeth collaboration, OSI and the gorgeous No-Man. Also Steven and his long term friend and collaborator Tim Bowness have a brilliant podcast called The Album Years, which is informative, quirky and often hilarious.
Glad you liked it! Welcome! You are now done....
Yes, mellotron on this album.
Oddly enough not engineered by SW, but the Great Alan Parsons
Delicious.
Yeah. This was one of the songs I had on my list to request. Glad you got to hear this. I was going to recommend a live version but this is fine.
Steven’s solo stuff is just as good as his PT stuff. It’s hard to pinpoint the differences because every album is so different. Even for PT. The main thing is his band lineup changed a lot on his solo stuff. Guthrie Govan on guitar and Marco Minnneman on drums is probably my favorite lineup. And his album Hand Cannot Erase is so good. He has a few scratch your head stuff though like the future bites which I still cannot seem to like.
He’s done so much collab work but it doesn’t always work. He did an album with the singer from opeth under the name Storm Corrosion. Fans are split between it being a masterpiece or a complete disaster. It’s a disaster for me. You might actually appreciate it with your background.
I believe SW is self taught on most instruments and doesn’t have much of a technical knowledge about anything. He views guitars as tools and has no connection to them like a lot of musicians do. There was a rig overview with him on CZcams where he’s going through his guitars and pedals and he has no idea about pickups; bridges and all that stuff. He just knows how to make stuff sound good. Shows you don’t always need to be technical to play good music.
If you really get into his music, it may take you longer than your Rush journey because he has so many projects. It’s kind of crazy how many places he shows up.
Enjoy the music!!
Edit****. A short clip of them residing this. czcams.com/video/eTiLoiyHDRI/video.html
Watch at your own leisure if you want.
I love that! Entirely too much emphasis on gear. That makes me like him even more lol
FUTILE by P-tree!!
Yeah, this is not Porcupine Tree in any way. Steven Wilson has made .. six solo albums and seventh is on it's way. :)
Also Rick Beato just released an VERY interesting interview with Steven, check it out at some point: czcams.com/video/03vThmG46A8/video.html
Well worth the hour of my time, and I would think yours as well taking how much you seemed to enjoy this song. :)
** EDIT **
Oh and this entire album is well worth a listen. As is "Hand. Cannot. Erase."
I think you might have liked that one! 😂
Great reaction video dude! Just wish you'd used this official live version. Takes the song to another level! czcams.com/video/EM-5EBAJ7tA/video.html
Please, do yourself justice , watch the live Mexico City version
Great choice. All of Steven Wilson's solo albums are fantastic except for his last one -- The Future Bites (unless you enjoy electronic pop.) Was a big misfire by him, IMHO.
TBF is my favourite album
