Stevens love letter to 70’s progressive rock, taking elements of King Crimson, Yes and maybe Pink Floyd (his favourite band). Every track on the album has some of these elements but it is a modern prog classic. The mellotron used on the track is Robert Fripp’s one used on The Court of the Crimson King, there’s a video somewhere of Steven recording it. He said it barely worked but had that distinctive sound.
There’s also some video of the band recording the album in the studio with Alan Parsons engineering.
Glad you’re enjoying this, Steven doesn’t stand still so every album of his totally different, kinda like Bowie. Hand Cannot Erase is still quite progressive and well worth checking out.

  • @Cleve_Crudgington
    @Cleve_Crudgington Před 3 lety +7

I was blown away the first time I heard this song. It first appeared on a live album before Raven was released so it kind of felt like it came out of nowhere. It's one I frequently find myself going back to and is probably tied with the title track as my favourite from the album.
One of my favourite details of the song is how sudden the initial transition is from the fast part to the mellow part. But when it changes back it happens in a much slower and more organic way. The pacing and flow are amazing.
You mentioned that you think of Wilson being a low to mid range singer (and it's true that he spends a lot of time there) but he has a pretty good falsetto. King Ghost and Same Asylum as Before are good showcases.

I always see this as Stevens tribute to Yes! Who he clearly has a lot of time for and whose music he has spent a lot of time with, remixing most of it but it also has influences from the more Jazz influenced prog like Camel and Caravan. Luminol is a stunning track in a stellar solo career worthy of much more reacting. I hope you will find the time to explore more. It is really worth walking through the albums from Grace for drowning through to The Future bites like you have done with some of the classic bands like Genesis. It’s a musical journey that is as stylistically challenging as it is musically enjoyable. Oh and there is also that little band project called Porcupine tree to explore to further underline his genius.

Just realised that I ignored Insurgents which is SWs first solo album. Never got on with it as there is a lot of experimental stuff on it, to the extent that it completely slipped my mind. Happy to see you react to more Steven Wilson! "Luminol", like the rest of "The Raven that Refused to Sing" is a fine homage to 70s prog, an absolute must-hear.
I hope you can do a reaction to the song "Picking up the Pieces" by MEER, which is the opening song from my current album of the year "Playing House". MEER is a Norwegian band that does symphonic/progressive art rock, has beautiful male and female vocal harmonies, and includes both a violin player and cello player. Rarely does an album bring a smile to my face like this one! Unfortunately, despite how good this band is, they barely have any recognition!

    - King Crimson "Starless"

    - Rush "La Villa Strangiato"

  • @DeesoSaeed

Steve Wilson had such a fantastic band in his first four solo albums. The jammy sound comes fron the fact they used to record it "live" in the studio, only needing very few takes and often just nailing it in the first take. That's how good they were. And lets not forget Alan Parsons was helping Steve in the production and mixing in this one.
You really should do the rest of the album.

That's only The Raven and Hand (album 3 and 4). Album 1 and 2 were very much not recording live, quite the opposite, he built them up with studio overdubs and a variety of players across each track. Insurgentes and Grace for Drowning are actually my favourite SW albums.

This is one of my favorite (if not THE) tunes from the last years. What a song and what an album. And what bass line !!! I try to play that one, not easy :-D The album is incredible in the sense that, to me, it sounds like a tribute to seventies prog. You can find almost sections that reminds all of the big prog bands from that period. In Luminol, I hear keyboards that remind me Greenslade for instance and guitars that are Hackett's style. Nick Beggs on bass seems a bit Squirish. And the start of the vocals are very Caravanesque. I'm now curious to hear you react to this Justin.

    About. Freaking. Time. :-)
    1. What a way to start an album!
    2. IIRC, the Mellotron SW used for this album is one of the original King Crimson '69 boxes he got from Robert Fripp.
    3. For my money, this is SW's best band. Guthrie and Marco and Nick are killin' it.

A great review of a great song. I agree it’s a modern prog classic as is the album. Wilson was inspired to make an album in the traditions of old school prog yet with his own contemporary twist and I think he produced a sensational work. I love the bass sound and those power chords you mentioned I get a feel of Yes but the meat of the song is very much SW and I do love his understated singing he has a very distinct sound and I wish more singers of this genre would sing this honestl without the theatrics. Hope you can go through the rest of the album there are more gems. The whole album is loosely based on ghost stories

Afternoon, JP. Dave from London, just back from getting my second jab. Back In My Arms Again (one arm, more like)! Steven must be the most important modern progger (although I know he doesn't consider himself to be a progger), with his various bands and solo output, plus all his remixes and remasters. I have seen him live several times and his band is phenomenal. I agree that Nick is very Squire like here (shades of Tempus Fugit) and I also love his playing on the first Lifesigns album. Guthrie is so damned exciting both on record and live, and he is such a versatile session muso (check out his work with rapper Dizzie Rascal). Much of Steven's solo work seems to be about him paying homage to others bands and genres. This album is all about 70s prog such as Yes and Crimson (even the cover reminds me of Court of the Crimson King), and it gets a massive thumbs-up from me. Modern Classic, as you rightly say.

In a way, the brand and logo placement sort of reminds me of the Aphex Twin logo placement in some of the Chris Cunningham videos like "Window Licker" and "Come to Daddy".
Either way, it's a good start to the weekend.

Yes, Justin, I'm definitely feeling it!
It's been a minute since I was this knocked out by a song I had never heard! I know "The Raven That Refused to Sing" and "Drive Home", which are absolutely stunning songs, but I had not listened to this one, or the entire album.
I was first introduced to Steven via Porcupine Tree back in 2007 or 2008., During that time, I participated in a message board/forum (remember those?) where there was an ongoing thread called "Good and Juicy Songs for the Psyche". Someone posted some Porcupine Tree, and I was just blown away!
This is a huge bonfire of a song! Yes, ELP, King Crimson, Rush, Camel, some Moody Blues, and even a dab of CSN/CSNY!!!! I even hear hints of The Fixx! I'm sure I'll recognize more influences as I re-listen to the song, which I WILL do! I can promise you I will be re-watching your reaction to this many more times, now and in the future!
The fantastic arrangements, changing time sigs and transitions, choice and placement of instruments, and beautiful vocal harmonies are just EVERYTHING! The bass has both a Chris Squire AND a Geddy Lee feel, to me.
I mean, could he possibly have gotten any more of his influences in this amazing song?
And yet, it's not derivative of any of those bands, except momentarily at certain points - but it is so brilliantly put together that you not only don't mind, but you love him for it!
As usual, Justin, your appreciation of the song is so obvious, and your astute analysis is spot-on, and those things are what make your reactions so satisfying to watch and hear!
Thank you!! I hope you react to the entire album, so that I can re-live what I love about it, and experience for the first time what I have not heard, through your ears!
    ;)

  • @hellesndergaardpetersen8266

Steven Wilson a huge XTC fan - in fact he is remixing and remastering the entire XTC catalog from the original tapes - and says "he wont rest" until he is able to do all of them. SW also started Porcupine Tree - a really good psychedelic prog hybrid. . This guy very prolific.

Check out both Guthrie Govan and Marco Minnemann plus bassist Bryan Beller in their instrumental trio The Aristocrats. On the Dream Theater video about choosing Mike Portnoy's replacement they didn't show the part where they were going to choose Marco until they asked him if he owned any Dream Theater albums, and he said he didn't. I'm glad. The Aristocrats would never have been formed. Minnemann and Beller also played together in former Zappa guitarist/keyboardist Mike Keneally's group, and those three toured with Joe Satriani while Guthrie Govan was touring with Hans Zimmer. The Aristocrats was formed by accident when Minneman and Beller asked Govan to fill in for ailing guitarist Greg Howe at a NAMM Show performance. They clicked so well they formed the group. Check out their live stuff. For a great Minnemann drum solo, see "Blues F*ckers" from " Boing, We'll Do It Live ! "

From what I recall of Guthrie' s recollections of this group, he had to rein it in a bit (to make space for more other instruments than just the usual bass and drums he'd been familiar with up till then). That doesn't mean he had it easy. It sounds like it was challenging for him to fit in with this group and Steven's vision, rather. Something like Bill Bruford remembering Yes as "a terrifying place" (or it might have been King Crimson - anyway some sentiment like that up in the aether of music).
Pronunciation of his surname is more like "Guvvan", but you'll find that out in time anyway, I suspect.
-- And yes, when Steven Wilson sounds a bit like someone else, it's never by accident. :-) (I also think this is a masterpiece - bringing together so much in one place, with the personality of every member of the band coming through - .. I suppose I just like it a lot so want it to be one? At times it makes me want to cry, actually. The happy way, I mean.)
This idea of each personality showing in the sound is something *Markus Reuter* brought up as a mark of quality in his chat with *Jon Poole* the other day. It might run a bit long for you (more than 2 hours), but I'll give the link, anyway. I don't think there are many CZcams channels where the presenter is a Stick Man? czcams.com/video/R_Ah_9Il9_U/video.html

Great great review Justin!!! I'm familiar with Steve Wilson but never took the curiosity plunge into his work. After hearing this...I have got to got to listen to this again. Just might explore the rest of the album while I'm at it. I know Steve did all the Yes remixes and here you can definitely hear the Yes influences. Makes me wish in the Later years of Yes that they would have given us something like this instead if Open your Eyes or Magnification albums which in my opinion were ahhhhhh ok I'll say it....horrible. ( I admit In the Presence of....is a nice track but hey....)
Anyway, Steve Wilson brings it home here....plus the mellotron ooooh that's so sweet. Thanks for the long play Saturday Justin.
    Note: Long play Saturday suggestion:
    Artist: Airbag
    Song: Homesick

The whole album is a modern classic with a vintage sound to it. The album that came after, Hand.Cannot.Erase, is also a modern classic, but with a more contemporary sound (and a great concept). Same incredible line-up of Wilson, Beggs, Minneman, Holzman and Govan. My advice : listen to both albums in their entirety, each song separately fo the Raven and by whole sides with HCE. You won't regret it!

I was not familiar with Steven's solo work but know him as being involved with King Crimson's COTCK 5.1 remix. Did a great job on that and is a very good listen. Since we're on KC again, when will we get more listens? There is a great live recording from Toronto 2015 with a 7 pc band hi-lighting 3 drummers on the main stage. Tracks "Larks' Tongues in Aspic Part I" and "Easy Money" are given a fresh life. I saw this concert twice in the three nights they played and was in awe both times. These geezers can still rock hard.
Just read that Steven also did 5.1 remixes of the first 4 Tangerine Dream albums which came out in 2019. WOW. Busy boy.
There's a band for you Justin. Start with Force Majeure. You won't be disappointed.

Well, this'll take a few more listens to get a handle on. A song of 2 halves. On first listen I preferred the 2nd, though that may change. The bass throughout, outstanding, a far cry from 'too shy shy' eh! But then all the musicianship was top notch. It does reprise, fine, but there's so much going on all told, i'm struggling to marshal my thoughts. Need to hear it again, and the rest of the album. I picked up elements of Yes, Zep, even Beach boys, it's quite the busy track.

  • @ProgMannen

Yep.. Steven Wilson is pure genius in his music.
But what i really liked was watching u react to the song.
Those of us that have seen most of your reactions could easily pick out when u went from really liking to loving the song. The break down reminds me of Norwegian band "Airbag" and the song "Homesick I-III"
Wilson's next album "Hand. Cannot. Erase" is probably his best... so far.
