  • This is a quick unboxing and overview of the Netgear GS116E v2 16-port Gigabit Ethernet Smart Managed Plus Network Switch. In this video I give you a quick look at what's on the out and inside of the box and quick description of my use case for this network switch.
This will be upgrading an old Netgear FS108 - an 8-port 'Fast' 100Mb switch from the 'budget home network build' videos I made here: • Budget Home Network Bu...
I purchased this unit from Amazon UK to replace the existing Netgear FS108 unmanaged network switch which has been very reliable for many years. The main reason for replacement being to have gigabit connectivity between devices and additional ports available due to house renovations and additional RJ45 ethernet points being added. I've also wanted to install a smart switch at this location for a while now in order to setup VLANs within pfSense and segregate various network traffic.

I like this switch. It is compact and looks really cool. There are great bargains to be had on ex-corporate switches on eBay, but these tend to be large, heavy and noisy and generally not suitable for the average home network😄. This is quiet and has a simple web based interface. It is more expensive and doesn't have as much features as say the Zyxel GS1900 offerings - but the build quality is solid and I have never had any reliability issues with Netgear devices.

Do you just put the router into the first port?

You could connect your router into any of the ports, it'll figure itself out and 'just work' generally.
However I tend to use either the first or last port for my 'up link' to a router, etc.
      Hope this helps,
