  • Abishek Raghuram Sings Manavasi Ramasami Iyer's(1914) composition In Vagadeeswari, more or less seems to be Nasika Booshani. Abishek is well versed to play the Nasika Booshani too.The main difference, easily detectable is M1 in vagadeeshwari and M2 in Nasika Bhooshani..Abhishek himself sang "Maara Vairi" in one of his concerts! Raga Vagadheeswari is really soothing .Abhishek added more flavor to it.Excellent. It reminded me Dr.Balamuralikrishna in more aspects

I'm already running out of adjectives for Shri "Abhishek Raghuram", despite listening to him at length only for the past few days. His alapanas make me cry spontaneously and RTPs make me both laugh and cry simultaneously.😂 That this happens despite me being a music illiterate says/shows something about his prowess. 👌
There's nary a doubt he clearly belongs to the once-in-a-lifetime / century category of music jambawans (stalwarts) and rasikhas are simply blessed to be alive during his time, getting drenched in a kind of music that isn't of this plane of existence.😌 May be the Lord has decided to offer us mere mortals a glimpse of how music is rendered in his lokha, through this precious musician.🙌 Shambho!🙏

I totally agree with this comment that any raga if it is sung without the emphasis on the jiva swaras and vivadhi swaras (here ) it sounds like a different raga, The main focus of the singer should not only the fast prayogas but should bring out the chaya of that particular raga. I have noticed that ragas like Todi if sung in this style it looses its "Ghathram" and dignity....he is a great singer ...without any doubt..

The raga Vaagadheeshwari is a 'sampoorna raaga' - meaning all the seven notes appear in its arohana (ascent) and avavohana (descent) as srgmpdn - which differs from Chakravaakam raaga only in RI. Vaagadheeshwari is a Vivaadi (or roughly, discordant sounding) Raaga due to the use of BOTH Gs (flat and sharp G), whereas Chakravaakam contains the "regular" srgmpdn notes. The discordance sounds weirdly pleasant to the ears, especially in the rendering in this clip.

I am a huge fan of Abhishek. However, I have to agree with Hari1093 on how Abhishek has handled VAgadEshwari - particularly the Shatsruthi Rishabham which should be a Dheerga swaram during delineation. Particularly, during fast phrases, he should emphasize the VivAdhi note with due care. No knock on his talent or Manodharma. He is a great artist. But, this RAgam should be handled differently.

Carnatic music is undergoing a vast change in rendition. I have heard Yesudas rendering this Raaga in Tamil Isai Sangarm sometime in late 60's or early 70's.There he sang this Raaga for more than an hour or so. His style was different and his rendering was great. But we cannot underestimate Abhishekh. This young lad has rendered the Ragaa in a fantastic way and perhaps what hari 1093 commented was right. But this does not spoil the rendition as Abhishekh brought out the best of Vagadeswari in his rendition

I am nobody to comment on His talent and knowledge... But I disagree with the way he starts Vagadheeswari here... The opening phrase without showing the shatsruthi Rishabham resembles Ahirbhairav or some raga in that family.. I believe that the unique flavour of the raga one intends to sing should come in the opening phrase itself. In general, I disagree with the way he treats this raga, at many instances, in this video It just my opinion, not a personal attack :) I admire him for his incredible voice and talent, and of course I am a big devotee of his grandfather Sri Palghat Raghu sir :)

True statement, but keeping Vagadeeshwari in suspense for few seconds/minutes has been a practice musicians have done for decades. Abhishek is just following that. There are 2 famous recordings where LGJ has done it, and Rengachari has sung the alapana where he stretches it for 2+ minutes before bringing out the Vagadeeshwari chaya.

Agreed. And the great vidwans also played with their audiences sometimes. In this case, Abishek seems to have introduced the rishabam at the 30 second point of this video. It does sound like Ahirbhairav initially, so I agree with you. However, when you're in a concert by this guy you're always catching up with what he is doing and what he has to offer, and that is truly a treat. :)
