I was never into basketball but used to love watch the Harlem Globetrotters on TV as a kid , not once did I ever ask why are there no white guys , I just enjoyed what I saw
Look again, there were white guys, they were there to be humiliated, and it was ok, it was. Nobody got butt hurt over it. I agree, there was no racism, the globe trotters were and still are beloved.

There are about 10 first nations NHL players right now, none of which are Eskimo's. Maybe 2 dozen Asians, a handful of players of Latino or Middle Eastern descent. That should leave upwards of 90% of the league being white. Not surprising they are trying to build the game into minority communities, there is way too much-untapped talent that isn't culturally even considering hockey as a sport to play.

Hockey is my favorite sport to watch, and when it becomes too politicized and starts to take away from the feel of the game, we have a problem.
Theo Fleury back in the day, was one of the most notable indigenous hockey stars of the 80s and 90s. So, as far as being discriminated against, he definitely knows all about that. Kudos to him for speaking out on diversifying this game. As a black hockey fan and former player, I definitely believe hockey is for everyone.
He was groomed and abused by a coach too.

Lol... Every NHL brand has a black player in the commercial and doing the voice over to a trap beat in the backround... CCM, Reebok, Easton. I have no problem w black players in hockey, or anyone playing hockey. However, the fact remains that I don't need to use all of my fingers to count the amount of black players in the NHL, and most are Canadian. Its just inauthentic and disappointing.

I think we need to break up the NHL's monopoly on professional hockey, and Hockey Canada's monopoly on amateur hockey, too.
BTW, I can tell you that Theo Fleury was subjected to discrimination throughout his career that was far more damaging than anything he would have faced if he were black - at 5' 6" he should have been too short and small to have become a Hall of Famer in the more physical era that he played in. Would you like it if the organist at an opposition rink played "Pop Goes The Weasel" for you, or you knew that you had to over-perform every night unlike a 6' 3" player would need to or your career would be ruined?

Don't miss the point. The NHL is saying there are "too many white people" and that they have "a lot of work to do." Words from them in an espn article. This diversity isn't about growing the game, it is wildly popular and more skilled than ever. This is anti white racism. Tuckers comparison to the NBA is spot on.
It isn't widely popular, it is the least popular major sport in this country. They don't want it to just be a game for white people because they want everyone's money. They want a diverse game so they can have more diverse crowd, which means more people. When the Thrashers left Atlanta, no one even cared, what league wants to have major cities ignoring their game?

Basketball, baseball and soccer are all played with a ball and with little to no a equipment. Hockey is on ice and played with a flat puck and requires $1000's of dollars in equipment. That's the major barrier to play this game, it's extremely expensive to the average person. Learning to skate and keeping balance is very difficult if one is not athletic or in great shape.
Couldn't stand Theo Fleury as a player, but I am with him on this. Hockey was the last of the Major League sports to be seriously hit by the Woke bug. It hurts because I could follow my favorite team and not be subjected by what has happened to the other pro leagues. It's now all about acceptance and diversity. What about the best players? Final thought: if black and other people of color do not follow hockey or play it, whose fault is that? Maybe the interest is simply not there?

I'm tired of the woke politics showing up in hockey. The NHL is a small pond of elite player of an ocean of hockey players coming from mainly Canada, States and Europe. The majority of people in those geographic areas are white, and the very top percentile get to play in the NHL. There are some barriers though. 1. Equipment is very expensive, especially now days. Other costs are league costs/icetime plus ice rental for practices. Extra training is another cost as well because rinks are expensive to rent along with the training staff. Many white kids can't play as well because of the cost barrier, which the woke panel won't consider. 2. Ice rinks aren't as accessible as the playing fields and basketball and tennis courts. 3. Ice Hockey is a multiskilled sport. One may be able to ball/floor hockey, but ice hockey is much more challenging and you not only have to be able to skate, but skate well. Most elite hockey players have skated since they were toddlers and played hockey in leagues at the earliest age groups. Not only that, the players that seem to excel many times have had access to ponds, ice rinks, where they can practice their skating and skills, which isn't accessible as much in cities. 4. Ability to get to rinks around and out the city, which could be challenging for some kids with single parents.
My parents could barely afford putting me in hockey and I would sometimes have to get cheaper sticks or 2nd hand skates.
I'm all for kids of ALL backgrounds being able to play. It takes a lot of resources to make it more accessible to more people, and I'd like to see these rich out of touch people like the bettmen put their money where their mouth is, instead of just virtue signalling. Talking about seeing more diversity will never make it possible for there to be a much more diverse group of hockey players without a thought out plan from people that really KNOW hockey and a TON of resources made available to children interested.
They first need to develop more interest, and maybe start ball and floor hockey in school gyms. They're may need to be build some seasonal hockey type of rinks where they can be used as ball or roller hockey in summer and ice rinks in winter.
They also need to talk more about solutions so there is less barrier for kids that are genuinely interested in playing hockey, but it shouldn't be just to see more diversity in hockey, because they don't seem to have a problem of there being hardly any white and short players in NBA. Even if there are many more kids in different races that play, the NHL won't change much -- just like the NBA won't change much.
It does seem really weird they have an issue with there being a majority of white hockey players, as white people make up the majority in U.S. and Canada and Europe, but they have very little concern less and less white people playing in basketball and football. Why do they have make it an issue if they have no real plan in gaining real interest in game and overcoming the barriers to the game -- especially in reaching the elite level?

Looks like another sport wanting to make sure it’s fans can find better things to do with their time other than watch woke sports. Theo was one of those players you hated, but wanted your team to have him. Best compliment you can give.

I don’t think the NHL is dumb enough to believe that it can impose affirmative action on the league. This is a business not Harvard University. Players from all over the world compete to play in the NHL. I think what they want is for more kids of color to play hockey. Fine, but hockey is so expensive that it caters to upper middle class, mostly white, families. So here’s an idea: stop playing footsie with BLM and actually invest money in developing inner city hockey programs. Start in the great hockey city of Chicago. Build hockey rinks on the south side, provide free equipment, hire coaches, and teach kids to skate and play the game. It would change a lot of lives.
Hockey is for everyone because it isn't for anyone...in particular. It doesn't need any particular effort to draw this group or that group because if you can't love it for what it is, maybe you need to watch another sport.
Whos paying for equipment and Ice time ? I couldn't play hockey growing up in Detroit cause we could not afford it . We moved out to the suburbs and still could not play because it was still too expensive.
Youth hockey became big business in the 1980's and 1990's and excluded a lot of kids economically. It is in every sport's best interest to attract the best athletes they can by ensuring that it is accessible. If Gordie Howe were six years old today and in the same circumstances as he was growing up poor in rural Saskatchewan, his family would not be able to afford organized hockey for the kids.
